Third Pope From Venice
Pope Paul’s Clock
Rang At Death Hour
VATICAN CITY (NC) - The old alarm clock which Pope
Paul VI had used since 1923 spontaneously rang at 9:40 p.m.
Aug. 6 as the pope died, said the Vatican spokesman, Father
Romeo Panciroli.
“I confirmed the news with several people who were at the
pope’s bedside,” the Vatican spokesman told journalists Aug.
16.
He said that the pope had always used the small, old alarm
clock, even taking it along on his trips, since 1923 when he
served in the Polish nunciature.
“It awakened him every morning faithfully at 6 a.m.,” said
the spokesman.
The episode was contained in an account of the pope’s final
hours given journalists by Father Panciroli.
“The pope had often asked his private secretary, ‘Please help
me to die a good death,’ ” said Father Panciroli.
As is known, the pope’s condition worsened while his
secretary, Monsignor 1 Pasquale Macchi was celebrating Mass in
his sickroom.
“Communion was given the pope under both species as
Viaticum,” said the spokesman. “At the end of Mass, Monsignor
Macchi asked the pope if he wanted the anointing of the sick
and he answered, ‘Immediately, immediately.’
“At the end of the anointing he gave a wave to those
present,” said the priest.
He recounted that in his last minutes the only words the
pope said were Latin prayers, led by the papal secretary of state,
Cardinal Jean Villot.
The night before his death, said the spokesman, Pope Paul
had dinner as usual at 8:30 p.m. At 9:15 p.m. he recited the
Rosary with his secretaries, and at 9:30 he recited Compline
(night prayer of the church’s Liturgy of the Hours) with them in
a small chapel.
Solemn Papal Mass
Sunday At Noon
VATICAN CITY - A Solemn Papal Mass marking the
beginning of the reign of Pope John Paul I will be
celebrated in Saint Peter’s Square on Sunday September
3, at 6 p.m. (Noon EDT).

He once ordered gold from
Venice’s churches sold to
provide funds for
handicapped children - “the
real treasures of the church
are the poor,” he explained -
and he has repeatedly spoken
out against social injustice.
But he is no radical, and
he has made clear that he
does not believe that Marxism
is compatible with
Christianity. Writing for the
Vatican daily, L’OSSERVA-
TORE ROMANO, in
February 1977, Cardinal
Luciani criticized members of
Catholic Action who attempt
to curry favor with
communists and radicals.
Some Catholic social
activists, he said, were trying
to use the Second Vatican
Council to justify their
attempts to reach an
accommodation with
Marxists.
He quoted the words of
the French Dominican
theologian, Father Yves
Congar: “The greater part of
the ideas which have been
attributed to the council were
never set forth by the
council. For many the
council meant nothing more
than change.”
Catholics who have
misinterpreted the council,
said Cardinal Luciani, rely on
a false notion of pluralism,
thinking it “is a magic light
that dispels all the shadows
that arise from the teaching
authority of the church or
from the experts on
Marxism.”
He criticized those who
demand immediate reform,
saying that “means
revolution.”
“The church proposes
reforms for grave social
problems,” he wrote, “but
these take time.”
By taking up the double
name John Paul - he is the
first successor of Peter to do
so - he gave the world a clear
signal that he intends to
continue the work of his last
two predecessors, John XXIII
who began the Second
Vatican Council and Paul VI
who saw the council to its
conclusion and began
carrying out its program of
reform.

of the past and
Shortly after his election
to the papacy, the pastor of
his old hometown, who had
studied under the new pope
years ago when he taught in
the Belluno seminary, said,
“Students (in the seminary)
liked him very much. They
revered him because they
considered him an intellectual
who knew the material.”
The priest, Father Rinaldo
Andrich, said that Pope John
Paul had returned to Canale
d’Agordo earlier this year to
give a three-day series of
lenten exercises. “He was
especially popular with the
children,” he said.
Although he was not
widely known outside
northern Italy, the former
patriarch of Venice - the title
is largely honorary - comes
from a See that has now
contributed to the church
three of the seven popes
elected in this century.
Pope Pius X, who was
canonized a. saint in 1954,
was pope from 1903 to 1914.
According to reports
considered reliable, he was
elected pope only after a
cardinal who was considered
a far more likely candidate
was ruled out by the veto
power held by Austria. (One
of his first acts as pope was to
end the right to veto one
candidate that was held by
some Catholic nations.)
Pope John XXIII, who
dramatically changed the
course of church history by
beginning the Second Vatican
Council and a broad program
of updating the church during
his short reign (1958-63), was
widely judged at the time of
his election to have been
chosen as a compromise
candidate and an interim
pope. In 1958 the person
who went into the conclave
as the most likely candidate
was Cardinal Giovanni
Battista Montini, the man
who in 1963 became Pope
Paul VI.
Cardinal Luciani—

audiences around the world
were told that the day’s

The insistence with which
the smoke kept shooting out,
however, soon convinced
many Romans that the new

Thousands of Romans
walked or ran through the
city, with its sidewalks just
cooling off from a hot August
sun.
Just before Cardinal
F elici’s appearance, an
announcement came over the
square’s loudspeakers advising
the still-perplexed crowd to
look to the central balcony.
Enthusiastic youths
screamed and adults caught
their breath.
Unlike previous
announcements of a new
pope when they understood
who the new pontiff was
upon the announcement of
his first name, the crowd was
silenced at the Latin word
“Albinum.”
Most Italians in the sauare
and almost all foreigners
admitted they had never
heard of the new pope, but
all beamed at having seen the
historic announcement.
They cheered loudly at the
announcement of the pope’s
■ double name. He is the first
pope since Simon Peter to
have borne two names.
After his first blessing
“urbi et orbi” (to the city
and to the world), Pope John
Paul re-entered the Baroque
Hall of the Benedictions at
the second-level of the
basilica. He reappeared
several minutes later to wave
to and bless the several
branches of the Italian
military who had paraded
into the square, joining the
already present Swiss Guard
who wore armor and dress
uniforms.
The huge bells of St.
Peter’s swung wildly and
drowned out the ruffles and
flourishes played by a
military band in the square to
honor the new pope.
The ruddy-faced,
bespectacled Pope John Paul
appeared to be fighting back
tears during his balcony
appearances, but he was
grinning broadly.
