17, for what they call “the
last fling of summer.” The
affair will be a picnic near
Conyers and will begin with
an outdoor Liturgy at 12:30.
The following Sunday the
parish will host the annual
“Get Acquainted Breakfast”
at the Ramada Inn on
Candler Road at 10:30.

honor Father Tom Roshetko
on his 40th anniversary. We

A WATERMELON
FEAST ended the day of
picnicing fun for the
parishioners of St. Joseph’s in
Dalton. The annual
get-together was held at Red
Top Mountain State Park.
More than 125 of Father
Doug Edwards’ flock were on
hand for the gathering.
“SOUND OFF,” the
Atlanta City Council Public
Hearings, will be held on
Wednesday, September 20, at
noon in City Hall Council
Chambers, 68 Mitchell Street,
S. W. Next month the
meeting will be at 6:30 on
October 4. All are invited to
participate and express their
viewpoints on a variety of

THE THIRD ORDER of
St. Francis is seeking

collection of books for their

who attended the first Vacation Bible School
hosted last month by newly-named St.
Matthew’s Church in Fairburn. More than 75
adolescents from throughout the South Fulton
area attended the week-long event.
de Paul Convention Plans

‘‘Something For
Everyone” seems to be the
underlying theme of the
National Convention of the
Society of St. Vincent de
Paul to be held in Atlanta
September 28-October 1.
This catch-all cliche is
certainly obvious in the
number and scope of the
workshops that will be held
during the four-day gathering.
Convention Chairman
John Halligan and Joe
Flanagan, Executive Director
of the local host group, have
planned a total of 15
workshops for the
conventioneers.
For those who would like
to see some of the area’s
special attractions, several
tours have also been planned
for the hundreds of visiting
Vencentians and their
families.
One tour that will
undoubtedly prove popular
with out-of-staters is a
day-long excursion to Plains
with a side trip to the late
President Roosevelt’s Little
White House at Warm
Springs. Other destinations
for visitors include Stone
Mountain, Callaway Gardens
and a jaunt around the city v
Finest residential areas.
These not participating in
the convention but who like
to travel are invited by the
Vincentians to join any tour
group. Additional

The Sheraton-Biltmore
Hotel will be the setting for
this year’s convention, which
is the 64th annual meeting of
the national organization. It
is appropriate that it is being
held in Atlanta, as this year
marks the 75th anniversary of
the local Society of St.
Vincent de Paul.

La Juventud En Marcha

Han transcurrido ya seis meses, cuando por
primera vez se reunieron un gfupo de jovenes
para intercambiar ideas e inquietudes. En un
ambiente de entusiasmo, amistad y
camaraderia hubieron chistes, bromas y
manifestacion abierta de toda la energia que
caracteriza a nosotros los jovenes.
Descubrimos que Atlanta necesitaba un
grupo de jovenes latinos dinamicos, que se
preocupara por el crecimiento espiritual social
y humano de todos los jovenes.
Ese dia 4 de febrero de 1978, comenzo la
revolucion espiritual de la juventud latina de
Atlanta. A1 concluir aquella reunion, solo
sabiamos con seguridad una cosa, que el
trabajo habia comenzado y que Dios seria el
gran director de la obra. Surgieron diferentes
propositos en los cuales hemos trabajado a lo
largo de estos seis meses. Entre estos
propositos estan: el desarrollo y crecimiento
espiritual de los jovenes, desarrollo de talentos
(tales como teatro, musica, etc.), compromiso
social y pastoral con la comuni dad parroquial,
conquistar la juventud para Cristo.
Coincidimos llamarle al grupo, Juventud
Catolica Latina de Atlanta. Todos los
integrantes somos jovenes latinos que nos
preocupamos por conocer y acercarnos a Dios.
Todos hemos trabajado fuertemente para
lograr la realizacion de nuestros objetivos.
Realizamos una dinamica de grupo el dia 7
de mayo de 1978 en el Monasterio en
Conyers; hemos presentado una obra de teatro
en la Penitenciaria Federal el dia 20 de Mayo
de 1978, hemos realizado bailes, tombolas,
fiestas, deportes, etc. La juventud se esta
moviendo.
Una de las actividades mas importantes en
la cual estamos trabajando actualmente es, El
Primer Encuentro de Jovenes Hispanos. Este
encuentro sera el primero de esta naturaleza
en Atlanta. Se llevara a cabo los dias 22-24 de
septiembre de 1978 en “Lake Lanier”,
Hampton, Georgia. En dicho encuentro
participaran mas de 100 jovenes hispanos de la
region sureste de Estados Unidos, compuesta
por ocho estados. Sera un acontecimiento
historico de importancia en la pastoral juvenil
de Atlanta. Durante esos tres dias se
reflexionara sobre las clausulas consernientes a
los jovenes que se trataron en el Segundo
Encuentro Nacional Hispano de Pastoral que
se efectuo durante los dias 18-21 de agosto de
1977 en Washington.
Nosotros estamos muy contentos de poder
participar de este encuentro y contamos con
el apoyo de los otros movimientos apostolicos
de la comunidad, asi tambien como el
estimulo de los padres de nuestros jovenes.
Joven, hispano, unete a nosotros. Dios te
necesita para que ayudes a tus companeros.
Tu necesitas de Dios, porque El es la fuente de
tu vida. De Dios emana la felicidad, el amor, la
unidad.
El alcohol, la droga, el escaparte de la casa,
la pornografia, las disputas familiares, no te
hacen feliz.
Ese vacio espiritual que sientes solo lo
puede llenar Dios. La Juventud Catolica
Latina de Atlanta te da la Bienvenida y te
