WASHINGTON (NC) -
The Department of Health,
Education and Welfare will
shortly announce officially
the creation of the post of
assistant commissioner for
private educational services
within the U.S. Office of
Education.
The job of the new
assistant commissioner will be
to insure that private school
students receive all the
benefits to which they are
entitled under the
Elementary and Secondary
Education Act (ESEA), the
major federal program for
elementary and secondary
school students.
HEW Secretary Joseph
Califano called for the
establishment of an office for
private schools in ESEA
testimony last February. The
Office of Education worked
out details of the office with
representatives of the Council
on American Private
Education, including
representatives of the U.S.
Catholic Conference and the
National Catholic
Educational Association.
Msgr. Wilfred Paradis,
USCC secretary for
education, said the Office of
Education said it would
appoint an assistant
commissioner acceptable to
CAPE. He said he was “quite
pleased” with the final job
description for the new post.
The ESEA legislation now
being considered in Congress
would create a deputy
commissioner for private
schools. If that provision is in
the final bill, the assistant
commissioner would be
upgraded to a deputy
commissioner.

Wednesday nights are
special at Sacred Heart
Church in Hartwell. Thirty to
40 members of the parish
gather with their pastor,
Father Patrick McCormick, to
celebrate the Eucharistic
Liturgy and to participate in
the weekly Ultreya - part of
the post-Cursillo program, in
which those who have not
made the Cursillo also
participate.
I had the opportunity to
be the guest celebrant and
speaker for this enthusiastic
community last Wednesday. I
came away strengthened in
my faith and encouraged to
do more to promote lay
renewal in the Church.
I was struck by the fine
turnout in relation to the
total number of families in
the parish - one-fourth of the
families were represented.
Some had driven long
distances to be with their
brothers and sisters. There
was a strong sense of mutual
support in living fully the
Christian life.
After the Liturgy, Frances
Schleier encouraged us with
her witness. Her husband,
John, helped us find
nourishment in the word of
God. At the end of the
meeting, we gathered around
the tabernacle for shared
prayer and a blessing, before
socializing and sharing some
good country cooking.
It was a blessing to witness
this genuine Christian
community alive and growing
in Hartwell.
NEWS VIEW
CHAPEL COMPLETED - Sculptor Anthony
Minervini polishes his eight-foot-tall statue of
Mary after it was raised to the roof of Our
Lady’s Chapel at New York’s St. Patrick’s
Cathedral. The copper statue marks the
completion of the chapel which was added to St.
Patrick’s in 1906. The cathedral will celebrate its
100th anniversary in May.
Board Of Education
Sets Committee Work
Robert P. Zimmer, the
new Chairperson of the
Archdiocesan Board of
Education, announced at the
September meeting a
restructuring of the board
into three basic committees.
The three confhiittees
correspond to the three
divisions in the Department
of Catholic Education -
Schools, Religious Education,
and Campus Ministry. Each
committee has the
responsibility of developing
long-range plans for the
growth of the educational
mission of the Church in each
of these areas.
The Committee on
Schools is chaired by Thomas
McLaughlin of All Saints
Parish, the immediate
Past-Chairperson of the
Board. Dr. Paul Montello, of
Holy Cross Parish, chairs the
Committee on Religious
Education. The Committee
on Campus Ministry is under
the leadership of Sister
Jeanette Abi-Nader of St.
Pius X High School.
Zimmer asked that the
board give much greater
attention to planning for the
future. He also asked the
board and its committees to
develop a zero-based
approach to developing
programs and budget.
The Board of Education
and the Staff of the
Department of Catholic
Education have just
concluded a year-long
revision of all archdiocesan
policies and rules. These
revisions have been approved
by Archbishop Donnellan.
Copies of the revised policies
and rules are being
distributed to all parish
educational leaders.
Zimmer is a member of
Immaculate Heart of Mary
Parish. He is married and has
six children. He has served as
a member of the Parish Board
of Education for several years
and is tl/rriember of the Parish
Council.
He is a graduate of the

CUANDO una oracion consiste en la
repeticion prolongada de una misma formula,
breve aunque densa, no siempre se la ha
apreciado en su verdadero valor.
Hasta una epoca reciente, los modernos,
influenciados por una nocion cartesiana — es
decir racionalista — la han tenido como
sospechosa.
En nuestros dias sobre todo, no pocos
teologos catolicos y siguiendo su ejemplo,
otros que no lo son. renuevan contra el
Rosario la objecion protestante.
Dicen que el Rosario no es otra cosa que
esas vanas repeticiones de que habla el
Evangelio para condenarlas.
No se explican este modo de orar en que se
repite una misma formula, sino como una
oracion a proposito para gente simple, para no
decir crudamente, para “bobos” . . .
Con lo que tacitamente afirman que los
cristianos “maduros”, “ilustrados”, “sabios”,
hacen bien en prescindir de ese modo de orar;
digamoslo claramente, quieren que dejen de
rezar el Rosario, como ell os mismos lo hacen.
Es indudable que no solo el Rosario, sino
cualquiera forma de oracion vocal, el Oficio
divino inclusive o sea la Liturgia de las Horas,
puede degenerar en una vana repeticion,
cuando esta ausente la atencion y la fe viva al
recitar esas oraciones.
Pero pasa todo lo contrario, la repeticion
lenta y regular, siempre que vaya acompanada
de una atencion, suave y tranquila, produce de
suyo una pacificacion, no solo psicologica,
sino aun fisiologica, es decir, no solo del alma,
sino aun del cuerpo. Eso pasa cuando se
profundiza ye se concentra el pensamiento; asi
lo ensenan los ultimos descubrimientos de la
psicologia.
El ritmo verbal, en efecto, asociado a la
simplificacion y unificacion del pensamiento,
engendra a la vez una calma sedante del
sistema nervioso y facilita una pacificacion
psicologica, que estan entre si intimamente
relacionadas.
Todo esta asi preparado para que un
pensamiento central, de gran unidad y
riqueza, absorba el espiritu y lo disponga a la
mas alta contemplacion.
Lo cual se logra con mayor facilidad
cuando el ritmo de la recitacion se organiza en
momentos propicios y en forma adecuada.
Sin embargo, este proceso no descubre
toda su fecundidad posible, sino cuando los
nombres de Maria y de Jesus estan Llenos de
todas las resonancias de que son susceptibles,
gracias a nuestra fe.
Y esto es precisamente lo que se realza por
la meditacion de los misterios del Rosario.
Asi se concentra finalmente en el unico
nombre de Jesus, — asociado por su Sma.
Madre a nuestra humanidad —, todo lo que ha
hecho de El el objeto unico y total de nuestra
fe: la Palabra viviente de Dios, que nos creo a
su imagen y nos conserva en el ser que nos ha
dado.
En ultimo termino, aun pareee que estos
nombres, sobre todo el de Jesus, deben
emerger de la frase en que estan insertados; a
tal grado, que las demas palabras se pierden
como un rio en el mar.
Al mismo tiempo, la meditacion distinta,
precisa, de cada “misterio”, como no se borra
del todo, debe tender normalmente a fundirse
en una vision muy sencilla, a la vez que muy
“una”, de todo el misterio de Cristo en
nosotros, en su plenitud indisociable.
Cuando hemos llegado aqui, se puede decir
que la contemplacion se desprende como el
fruto maduro de una meditacion que ya la
contenia en germen.
El Rosario, una oracion para “bobos”? .. .
Un obispo frances, Mons. Pierre Boillon,
dice: “Es necesario que Maria este asociada a
la obra de mi salvacion. Si no esta
constantemente mezclada a la oracion del
sacerdote, del militante, del catolico
consciente, estoy convencido de que su vida y
su accion sufriran sus lamentables
consecuencias.
Conozco la objecion: Maria puede estar
presente de otras muchas maneras, no solo por
el Rosario! En teoria esto es verdad. Pero en la
practica, esto es lo que la experiencia me ha
ensenado.
Practicamente el Rosario es la manera de
hacer presente en nuestra vida a la Santisima
Virgen.”

Parish Football Kicks Off
Tom Hughes, IHM, newly appointed
Commissioner of the United Atlanta Metro
League, a well-respected parochial and
private church-school athletic league in the
metro area, reports that the 1978 league
football schedule is underway.
League participants in the football
program include Immaculate Heart of
Mary, Christ The King, Our Lady of
Assumption, Saints Peter and Paul,
Peachtree Road Methodist, Rehoboth
Baptist and The Lovett School.
Competition is divided into the Mighty
Mite (4th and 5th grades), Junior Varsity
(6th and 7th grades) and Varsity (8th
grade) Divisions, with championships to be
decided in divisional playoff finals on
Saturday November 18th at St. Pius X field
starting at 9:00 A.M.
Interested fans are encouraged to take
in the action (no charge) every Saturday
morning at St. Pius X, IHM and Sts. Peter
and Paul fields. Some Thursday night
games are also scheduled at Rehoboth
Baptist and Lovett School fields.
Hughes a Notre Dame grad, assures that
things are currently much more exciting
and promising in the U.A.M.L. than they
are in South Bend.
