AUSTIN, Texas -- Despite advice from Texas Gov. William P.
Clements, Jr. that churches should stay out of politics, delegates
adopted 22 resolutions on a variety of political and
church-related issues at the Texas Conference of Churches’
annual Assembly of Representatives in Austin. An attempt by
some Catholic delegates to put the conference on record against
abortion failed, however, and Bishop Vincent Harris of Austin
said the defeat marked the beginning of “the process of killing
this conference.”
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina - If papal mediation succeeds in
solving the territorial dispute between Argentina and Chile,
Pope John Paul II may visit the two South American countries,
said Cardinal Raul Primatesta of Cordoba.
TORONTO -- Conversions to Catholicism in 1979 may be on
the rise if the experience of the Catholic Information Center of
Toronto is any indication. The main reason seems to be all the
news surrounding recent papal events such as the deaths and
elections of two popes and the trip to Latin America by Pope
John Paul II, according to Father Thomas Dove, director of the
center.
VATICAN CITY - Three Malaysian bishops appealed to the
bishops of the world to make the public aware of the plight of
Vietnamese refugees and to influence governments to offer
asylum, Vatican Radio reported. The bishops mentioned the
decision of the Malaysian government not to allow any more
refugee ships to land in Malaysia. “The influx of these refugees
into Malaysia has almost provoked a national crisis” the bishops
said.
WASHINGTON -- Lent should be a time to “free oneself
from the slaveries of a civilization that is always urging people
on to greater comfort and consumption” and to help the poor
“escape from inhuman conditions and reach true human
advancement,” said Pope John Paul II in his 1979 lenten
message. The message was published in the United States by the
National Conference of Catholic Bishops to mark the beginning
of Lent on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 28.

God’s will in this case?
Think of Abraham. For his
risking trust to leave his
family and homeland to go
forth to a foreign * and
unfriendly land, God
promises him descendents.
Many barren years pass and
finally Isaac is born in
Abraham’s old age. “Yes,”
thinks Abraham, “God is
finally blessing me as He
promised.” Then comes the
command from God to strike
down and extinguish his only
son of promise and hope. In
the face of such passionate
hopes and in the presence of
the very child of promise, the
very sign of the covenant,
could Abraham easily say,
“this is God’s will?”
Take another set of
passionate hopes. Take the
three disciples catching in a
momentary glimpse the
glorified sight of the covenant
promise to Israel, Jesus on
the transfiguring mountain
top. They surely thought that
He is the One on whom their
hopes rested. Then Jesus
confuses them when He says
that they do not yet really
understand what kind of a
glory and what kind of a
promise they are actually
beholding. It is a glory which
will come about only after He
is snatched away from their
appreciative grasp in death.
Think of the crushed hopes
which still await these three
disciples when the one on
whom they had placed all
their hopes hangs dying. It
was not simply that Jesus
came into their lives as a
blessing but their further
conviction that God MEANT
His coming into their lives.
And THAT covenant blessing
was snatched away.
Where do we stand if we
were asked to stand beside
Abraham or later beside the
three disciples? How in our
lives, in their cherished
somethings and someones, do
the blessings of covenant and
confusion of cross come
together in some deeper
expression of God’s
purposes? This God who so
blesses us is the God who did
not hesitate to let go from
His appreciative grasp His
very Son in death.

Pope John Paul And Priests
VATICAN CITY (NC) -
Pope John Paul II emphasized
prayer, the spiritual life and
priestly celibacy in a lenten
address to the priests of
Rome (March 2).
“The priest is placed at the
very center of the mystery of
Christ,” the pope said. While
admitting a tension between
the interior life and the active
life, he said this tension is
resolved in the priest’s
imitation of Christ, whose
nourishment was fulfilling the
will of God.
In a pastoral message the
same day to the people of the
Diocese of Rome, the pontiff
urged them to “pay special
attention to the cross, in
order to understand anew its
eloquence.”
“To live Lent,” he said,
“means to be converted to
God through the mediation
of Jesus Christ.”
The Gospel program of
conversion demands “first of
all prayer, and then
almsgiving and fasting,” the
pope told the Roman people.
In his talk to Rome’s
priests, Pope John Paul
emphasized two “essential”
aspects of priestly life - the
need for personal holiness
and the priestly mission of
“building up the community
of the People of God.”
The two are linked in
Christ, he said: “The priest,
overpowered by the mystery
of Christ, is called to win
others over to that mystery.
The priest is not only a man
‘for others’ - he is called to
help ‘the others’ become a
community, namely to live
out the social import of their
faith.”
Speaking of priests as “a
clear and unequivocal witness
of eternal life and the
resurrection of the Body,”
the pope said, “in this light
the commitment to celibacy
must also be protected, which
appears then as a very
important contribution to the
REVEREND FORTUNE C. FRENOY, S.M. will
commemorate 25 years of priestly ordination on
Sunday, March 11. A Mass of Thanksgiving will be
offered at Our Lady of the Assumption Church at 1:00
p.m. A reception will follow in the parish hall. Father
Frenoy, who taught at Marist for approximately eight
years, now serves as Associate Pastor for Our Lady of
the Assumption Parish.

building up of the church
and, therefore, as an element
characterizing the spirituality
of the priest.”
He urged the priests to use
the period of Lent to renew
their sense of priestly
identity, which he said can
never be considered
secondary to their personal
identity.
“We must guard carefully
against ‘dividing’ our
personality as priests. We
must guard carefully against
allowing our priesthood to
cease being the ‘most
essential’ thing, the ‘unifying’
element of everything we are
involved in. It can never
become something
‘secondary’ or ‘supplemen
tary,’ ” he said.
In the priest’s work of
building up the People of
God, the pope said, priests
should pay special attention
to their preaching, their work
of religious education,
confession and spiritual
direction. Priests must pay
special attention to the
suffering and the needy, he
added.
Speaking specifically as
“bishop of Rome for only a
few months,” the recently
elected pope from Poland
said, “I am beginning little by
little to get to know my new
diocese. I take account of the
fact that my ‘universal’
mission is based on my
‘particular’ one, and therefore
I am trying to dedicate
myself to the latter as much
as possible.”
He made particular note of
the lack of priestly vocations
in the Diocese of Rome,
urging the priests of the
diocese to pray and work
actively and systematically to
promote new vocations.
The Sacrament Of The Sick
BY FR. LOUIS
NAUGHTON
In conjunction with the
Season of Lent,
Archbishop Donnellan will
be the Principal
Celebrant at a
communal celebration of
the Sacrament of the
Anointing of the Sick
which will take place
within the context of the
12:10 Noon Mass at the
Cathedral on Wednesday,
March 14, 1979. Those
who are eligible to receive
this Sacrament should
avail of the opportunity of
doing so on that occasion.
Many people have had
the impression that a
Catholic must be dying in
order to be eligible to
receive this Sacrament.
Such an impression is
INCORRECT. On the
contrary, it is strongly
recommended that an
elderly person in weak
condition because of
advancing years should
receive this Sacrament. It
is hoped that as many as
possible of our elderly
parishioners who are in
Sacrament are Catholics
who are seriously ill.
Elderly people may be
anointed if they are in a
weak condition although
no dangerous illness is
present. Included are those
who, because of their
weak condition, are unable
to come to Church on a
regular basis. Sick children
may be anointed if they
have sufficient use of
reason to be comforted by
this Sacrament.
Sickness is more than a
medical phenomenon;
sickness can be serious
enough to cause a crisis
situation in our lives with
regard to our salvation and
to our life in and with
Christ in the Community
of the Church. To be sick
includes bodily pain,
psychic depression,
isolation from one’s
profession as well as from
normal human society,
especially as experienced
in the family. Sickness
often engenders
impatience, sulkiness and
excessive self pre-occupat
ion. Sickness sometimes
gives rise to spiritual
sickness which is causing
considerable concern.
Sickness embraces many
forms including illness
demanding serious surgery,
weakness due to advancing
years, chronic illness,
illness which considerably
confines activities, serious
deafness or blindness,
psychiatric illness such as
depression or severe
neurosis or serious
addiction - in fact any
illness which is considered
serious.
When illness is proving
such a burden as to be
endangering the sick
person’s faith and
confidence in God, this
then is an added reason for
such a person to avail of
the opportunity of
receiving the Sacrament of
the Anointing of the Sick.
In order to be well
prepared, persons planning
to receive this Sacrament
should, if possible, receive
the Sacrament of Penance
beforehand. However, not
being able to get to
Confession should not be
an obstacle to receiving
this condition will avail of
the opportunity to receive
this great Sacrament on
Wednesday, March 14.
People who are
seriously sick, especially
those preparing for major
surgery, are also eligible to
receive this Sacrament.
When serious illness
prevails, this Sacrament
should be received as soon
as possible. In the case of
obvious dangerous illness,
this Sacrament should
never of course be put off
until a very late stage.
The Sacrament of the
Anointing of the Sick
prolongs the concern
which Our Lord showed
for both the bodily and
spiritual welfare of the
sick, as the Gospels clearly
testify and which He asked
His followers to show also.
Those eligible for this
Sickness brings Crises
dryness, hardness of heart,
discouragement and even
despair. In such ways, a
person’s sickness or state
of impaired health can
weaken or undermine his
(her) relationship with
Christ. This Sacrament
therefore, brings about
spiritual healing and, if
God so wills, bodily
healing as well.
The Grace of the
Sacrament of the
Anointing of the Sick
helps us to overcome
specific obstacles to Grace
and Salvation arising from
the situation of sickness.
In this Sacrament, Christ
always strengthens and
supports the person in his
(her) sickness.
The Sacrament of the
Anointing of the Sick is
for Catholics who are
suffering from a degree of
the Sacrament of the
Anointing of the Sick.
The Co mmunal
Celebration of this great
Sacrament will take place
within the context of the
12:10 Noon Mass at the
Cathedral on Wednesday,
March 14, and a special
area in the Cathedral will
be reserved for those
planning to receive the
Sacrament. Further
information may be
obtained from the priests
of the parish, phone
233-2145.
Following the
Communal Celebration,
there will be a Saint
Patrick’s Day party in the
Hyland Center. Those
planning to attend this
party must contact Mrs.
Peg Fessenden ahead of
time by phoning
261-4369.
