ROME - German Jesuit Father Karl Rahner, one of the most
famous and respected living Catholic theologians, celebrated his
75th birthday March 5. To mark the event, the Herder
Publishing Co. issued a 700-page book in German called “Wagnis
Theologie” (Adventure in Theology). The book contains essays
by 38 theologians, all former students of Father Rahner, about
their experiences with him.

ROME - Africa faces a disastrous future in which
malnutrition and illness will reach catastrophic proportions
unless substantial political and economic changes take place,
said a report by the United Nations Food and Agriculture
Organization. Nutrition in Africa is becoming worse, the report
said.
WASHINGTON - Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare
Joseph Califano said the Hyde amendment restricting federal
funding of abortion has reduced Medicaid abortions by 99
percent from the previous level of about 250,000 a year. But a
spokesman for Planned Parenthood says some states have picked
up the costs of many of those abortions.
WASHINGTON - As President-for-Life Francisco Macias
Nguema of Equatorial Guinea commemorated 10 years in power
marked by religious and political persecutions, Amnesty
International and other human rights groups sought to alleviate
the fate of the victims. A Mass at St. Matthew’s Cathedral in
Washington celebrated by exiled Bishop Rafael Nze Abuy,
formerly of Bata, was attended by Guinean refugees,
congressmen and by refugees from other nations.
BOGOTA, Colombia -- Union, student, peasant and church
leaders formed a human rights organization in Colombia, saying
the army is engaging in arbitrary arrests and torture. The Board
Front for Human Rights was established in March.

HOMECOMING TEAM POSES
BEFORE THE BIG GAME’ - Rev.
Daniel J. O’Connor, pastor of St.
Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in
North Fulton County, is surrounded by
some members of his Homecoming II
team of parishioners. Homecoming is a
unique program designed to attract
former Catholics back to their faith.
Directly behind Father O’Connor is
John Foley. Clockwise, starting with
Foley, are Frank Massengill, Bob and
Mary Eidman, Terry Zobel, Connie
Sullivan, Bill Keeling and Sue McCoy.
Roswell Parish Evangelization—

only a passing acquaintance,
rather than using total
strangers.
“The second major change
we made is to use
Homecoming as an on-going
parish renewal program. We
started the third week of
January and are building
toward a climax in the last
week of March.
The control point for
Homecoming is a small
“prospect card” which each
parishioner is asked to fill out
before making contact with
an RCR.
This card is carefully
checked by Father O’Connor
and his assistant, Father
Daniel McCormick, to
eliminate duplication, to see
if there is some information
about that RCR that the
priests might be able to share
with the parishioner before
the contact is made, and to
allow the pastor to send a
special letter to the RCR,
explaining the program and
requesting the person to give
the St. Thomas parishioner a
chance to talk about the
parish, and about
Homecoming.
All of the parish’s efforts
are directed .toward
Homecoming Sunday, March
25, when parishioners are
urged to bring a guest to one
of the Masses, but
particularly the 9 a.m.
Community Mass, which will
be followed by a special
breakfast.
That week, from Monday,
March 26, through Friday,
March 30, there will be
seminars each evening which
are designed to address the
concerns of former Catholics
about key areas such as birth
control, changes in the liturgy
and the Church’s attitude
today toward divorced
Catholics.
To reach these people, the
parish has installed a special
phone - 475-0467 - where
laypersons will be available,
24 hours a day, to answer
questions about Homecoming
and about whatever the caller
wants to talk about.
“We have found from past
experience that many former
Catholics are anxious to talk
about whatever it is that
moved them away from an
active practice of their faith.

They want to talk to
someone who can listen with
sympathy and perhaps offer
some suggestions,” Father
O’Connor says.
To generate those phone
calls, the parish is advertising
in the North Fulton edition
of the Atlanta Journal, the
entire metropolitan edition of
the Atlanta Constitution, and
in the local Neighbor paper.
Copies of the
advertisement will be
distributed by parish teams at
Roswell’s major shopping
centers. A 60-second
commercial will be aired over
WSB, and Atlanta radio and
television stations are being
asked to broadcast a public
service announcement about
the Homecoming program.
“My most vivid memory,”
Father O’Connor recalls,
“was last time when we
brought back to the Church a
man who had been away for
30 years.
“He saw one of our flyers
that somebody had put in his
mailbox. He could barely
speak when he came to the
rectory. He said it was the
first time anyone had ever
asked him to come back to
Church in those 30 years.”
The priest paused for a
moment. “That was only one
example. There were a lot of
others.”
“And that is what
Homecoming II is all about --
a time to renew our own faith
and belief in Jesus Christ, and
a time to share that faith with
others.
“Our Homecoming
program could not have a
better name. What we are
doing at St. Thomas Aquinas
is inviting people to return to
the practice of their religion.
“Regardless of whether we
succeed in bringing back 500
people or five, we are doing
the Lord’s work. We are
trying to help people find
their way back home to Jesus
Christ.”
The presentation of
religious emblems to Girl
Scouts age 6-12 completed
the field testing of new
religious awards for Christian
and Jewish girls.
The LEHAVAH Religious
Recognition Award was
presented to a group of
Jewish Brownies and Junior
Girl Scouts March 9, during
Girl Scout Sabbath service
held at The Temple. On Girl
Scout Sunday, March 11, the
GOD LOVES ME Award was
presented to groups of
Protestant and Catholic
Brownies who field tested the
program this spring and fall.
The religious award
programs are designed to
strengthen through Girl
Scouting the relationship
between a girl and her
religious beliefs. The
programs are developed and
administered by the religious
groups involved because Girl
Scouts recognize that
religious instruction is the
responsibility of parents and
religious leaders.
Girl Scouting encourages
the girl to become a stronger
SMYRNA PARISH
member of her religion and to
wear the religious award on
her Girl Scout uniform in
recognition of the importance
of spiritual growth in Girl
Scouting.
To introduce the new
awards to the community, a
Religious Award Program
workshop will be held by the
Northwest Georgia Girl Scout
Council, April 30, 1979 at
7:30 p.m., at the Jewish
Community Center. All Girl
Scout leaders and religious
leaders and teachers are
invited to attend.
An interfaith committee of
volunteers in the Northwest
Georgia Girl Scout Council
developed the religious award
programs for younger Girl
Scouts - Brownies and
Juniors aged 6-12. Several
versions of the GOD LOVES
ME program were field
tested. The version finally
selected has been approved
by the Catholic Archdiocese
of Atlanta and endorsed by
the Atlanta Christian Council.

Scout and religious leaders
will be available from the
Youth Experiment
“Journey Retreat”
On March 2-4, 1979 when
Metropolitan Atlanta thought
about building another ark,
there was a reawakening
retreat happening in
Eatonton, Ga. Twenty seven
high school and college
youths and ten adult team
members from the St.
Thomas the Apostle Church
in Smyrna spent a journey
weekend retreat at Rock
Eagle 4-H Camp.
The leader, Father Ron
Gagne, from the LaSallette
community in Ipswich Mass,
became a friend more than a
retreat leader. The weekend’s
purpose, was to realize
“becoming fully human is
Christ’s call to Christians”
stated Father Ron.
Friday night, the group
experienced the most
breathtaking slide and music
presentation the writer has
ever seen. Everybody in that
room felt as if we were
floating through God’s
creation, the universe. The
bright stars and colorful
planets seemed infinite, and
oh so beautiful.
During the second session,
Saturday morning we worked
in groups and person to
person communicating in a
unique way. On a one to one
basis everybody had one
minute to think about a
topic, “What would I do to
change the world” of “Tell
about the person I think is a
good Christian.” After one
minute of thought, one
talked for two minutes while
the other just listened and
made no comments. Then
there was a moment of
affirmation, “I really learned
to like what you said.” Roles
were then reversed, then we
moved on to a new person
and a new topic.
That afternoon, after a
volleyball game we saw films
and talked about how people
build walls around their
feelings and ignore God’s call
to love. The movie with
Marcel Marceau titled, “The
Fable” had no words, only
music and action. The
message and effect of
building walls as did the man
in the movie was felt and
then expressed through group
collages.
In the evening the group
experienced a healing and
Reconciliation Service.
During the personal talk with
Father Ron or Father Tim
Randall, from St. Thomas,
each person received a
LaSallette Cross pin.
Afterward there was a group
absolution and each
individual was annointed with
oil.
By Sunday morning there
was a strong sense of
community and oneness with
God’s wonderful world and
the people he created in his
image. Even the hornets
flying around the chapel
during the mass celebration
and the tree bark toast
(named that because it was so
hard) were wonderful.
Father Ron said he only
wanted to “reawaken, just a
little bit some of the faith of
the youth in themselves and
towards God.” The writer
feels that was accomplished
and even more, from the
things expressed by the youth
during the weekend. God’s
presence was felt by ail this
journey retreat weekend.

FRENCH CARDINAL
JEAN VILLOT, the
Vatican’s secretary of
state for the past 10
years and the man who
temporarily headed the
church last year after the
death of two popes, died
March 9 at his apartment.
The 73-year-old cardinal
was hospitalized March 5
with what doctors
described as “an acute
bronchial pneumonia,”
and Pope John Paul II
interrupted his lenten
retreat March 8 to visit
him. Cardinal Villot had
been taken home earlier
on the day he died.
Cathedral
Recording
The Cathedral of Christ the
King has been selected as the
site for a recording to be
made during the month of
March. The featured
performer will be Mr. Richard
Morris, internationally
renowned concert organist
playing the Cathedral’s
Ruffatti pipe organ. With Mr.
Morris will be brass players
from the Atlanta Symphony
Orchestra.
The recording will be made
utilizing a revolutionary
direct disc process which
insures the utmost fidelity.
Given the artistry of these
performers plus the
magnificent organ and the
perfect acoustical
environment of the Cathedral
this promises to be a dazzling
production.
So that the public may
have a foretaste of these
musical riches Mr. Morris and
the Atlanta Symphony Brass
players have consented to
perform the works to be put
on the record at a concert to
be held at the Cathedral
Sunday, March 18 at 8:30
