MONSIGNOR JERRY HARDY,
Chancellor of the Archdiocese, imposes

during the Cathedral ordination.
ARCHBISHOP DONNELLAN receives the Promise
of Obedience from Anthony R. Green.
It was ordination day at the Cathedral of Christ the King on
Saturday, June 2. Archbishop Thomas A. Donnellan ordained
three candidates to the Order of Priesthood. The newly
ordained are Father Jose Fernandez-Solis, Father Edward J.
Thein and Father Anthony R. Green.
On Saturday, May 19, the Archbishop ordained Charles J.
Kerscher a deacon in the Chapel of Sacred Heart School of
Theology, Hales Comer, Wisconsin. Deacon Kerscher is 61 years
old and retired from the Atlanta Post Office in 1972. He will be
ordained a priest later this year.

CZESTOCHOWA, Poland
(NC) - Ad libs and emotional
gatherings became a standard
feature on the third day of
the visit to Poland by Pope
John Paul II. He seemed in
great spirits as he addressed
an estimated 500,000 people
who came on June 4 to Jasna
Gora, the site of the shrine to
Our Lady of Czestochowa, to
watch the pope celebrate
Mass.
The pope ad libbed for 20
minutes during the homily.
“Again the pope speaks
too long. Again they will cry
at me, ‘What can you do with
this Slavic pope?’” he told
the crowd.
The Mass was also an
emotional experience for the
pope, who concelebrated
with the Polish bishops. As he
looked at the bishops and
called them “brothers,” his
voice trailed off and he
moved away from the
microphone and was unable
to speak for several minutes.
The crowd helped the pope
regain his composure by
singing “God Bless Poland.”
During the homily, the
pope consecrated himself and
the Catholic Church
throughout the world to the
mother of God.
Our Lady of Czestochowa
is the queen and patronness
of Poland and her image,
called the “black madonna,”
draws hundreds of thousands
of Polish pilgrims every year.
The shrine is housed in the
Monastery of Jasna Gora,
near Czestochowa. Jasna
Gora means hill of lights.
The day also saw the first
public outburst in the always
fragile relations between
Poland’s Catholic Church and
the communist government.
Before the Mass, a priest at
the monastery said police
were stopping thousands of
people trying to reach Jasna
Gora for the Mass. A
spokesman for Interpress, the
government news agency, said
the charges were unfounded.
Later in the afternoon, the
pope descended the Jasna
Gora hill to meet
representatives of the Diocese
of Czestochowa in St.
Sigismund Church, next to
Czestochowa’s huge Nowotki
Square.
The huge crowd of people
filling the square issued a
prolonged cheer at 5:30 p.m.
as the church bells signaled
the arrival of the papal
motorcade.
Also arriving in the
Czestochowa Diocese was the
Pilgrim Lady of Czestochowa
- a replica of the original
black madonna icon. The
replica was blessed by Pope
Pius XII in 1957 and since
then has been traveling from
diocese to diocese throughout
Poland.
The pope attended Mass in
the church and preached a
homily in which he
frequently diverged from his
prepared text, obviously
enjoying himself and at ease
with the people.
In the prepared text he
traced the travels of the
pilgrim icon over the past two
decades, saying its arrival in
Czestochowa, home of the
original black madonna,
constituted “as it were the
last link in that magnificent
chain.”
In his ad lib remarks, he
praised the local priests and
bishops, recalling old
friendships and citing some
by name. He was repeatedly
interrupted by cheers and
applause, especially when he
referred to himself as “a
retired archbishop of
Cracow.” Cracow, Poland,
was his See before he was
elected pope.
The pope received modest
symbolic gifts such as
flowers, small food baskets !
and native crafts from
representatives of diocesan
parishes. For a more
substantive gift, the parishes
took up a collection to buy
Polish medicines for the pope
to donate to a country in
Africa where Polish
missionaries are working.
The collection will buy an
estimated ton of medicine,
said church officials.
The pope also blessed 15
cornerstones for use in
shrines to be built around the
diocese.
At 8 p.m. the pope spoke
again at the Monastery of
Jasna Gora. He praised the
sick and suffering, telling them
they were participating in the
sufferings of Christ. He urged
them to offer their pain and
physical weaknesses as a
spiritual offering for the good
of their fellow men and of
the church.
He also praised doctors,
nurses and health-care
workers for responding to
Christ’s call to care for the
sick.
