Honors Day At Pius
Bids Adieu To Grads
FATHER TERRY YOUNG,
principal, presents the Monsignor
Maloney Award to senior Margie
Cashin, National Merit Finalist, who
achieved the highest scholastic average
for four years at St. Pius X High
School.
Alex Smith Top Marist Alumnus
Alex Smith, a 1941
graduate, was presented with
the Distinguished Alumnus
Award at Marist School’s
commencement exercises at
Symphony Hall.
The Marist alumnus was
cited for “outstanding
achievement and contribution
to his community.” Smith,
the third recipient of the
annual Marist award, joins
George Craft (’27) and
Emory Cocke (’15) as
distinguished Marist alumni.
Throughout his adult life
Alex Smith has been a
practicing attorney. He was
the fourth lawyer to join a
small Atlanta law firm upon
completing law school at the
University of Georgia in
1949. That firm, today
known as Smith, Cohen,
Ringel, Kohler and Martin,
has grown to be one of the
more prestigious Atlanta law
firms with more than 60
lawyers.
As a lifelong parishioner of
Christ the King Church,
Smith has served on every
Archdiocesan drive, building
conmittee, and finance
committee, and has served
the St. Vincent De Paul
Society. He has served as an
officer and director of Our
Lady of Perpetual Help Free
Cancer Home for several
years. Smith has likewise
served as a trustee and
member of the Executive
Committee of the Holy
Family Hospital and had
participated in the
establishment of the

Smith was organizer and
first president of Central
Atlanta Progress, Inc., which
was established to retain and
develop downtown Atlanta as
a leading city of the
Southeast. He is an active
member of the Atlanta
Chamber of Commerce and is
an officer and director of the
downtown Kiwanis Club.
As Atlanta’s only
representative on the State
Highway Board, Smith has
served three Georgia
governors who have regularly
sought his judgment in
balancing the interests of the
environmentalists with that
of the community’s business
and transportation
proponents. He remains an
active member of the Georgia
Conservancy.
Alex Smith was presented
with the Brotherhood Award
of the National Conference of
Christians and Jews in 1976,
joining such distinguished
previous recipients as Ivan
Allen, Jr., Richard H. Rich,
and Archbishop Paul
Hallinan.
Alex and his wife Betty
live at 158 West Wesley Road
N.W. in Atlanta. They have
seven children. Four of their
five sons are also Marist
graduates. The fifth, Bill, will
be a sophomore at Marist
next year.
St. Pius X High School
administration and
department heads in full
academic attire presented
awards to students who have
achieved academic excellence
for this school year at the
Honors Assembly.
Margie Cashin, senipr,
received awards including the
Monsignor Cornelius Maloney
Award for the highest
scholastic average, National
Merit Finalist scholarships to
Cornell University and to
Virginia Polytechnical
Institute and the National
Council of Teachers of
English writing award.
National Merit Finalist
Robert Klant also received a
scholarship to Erskine
College.
The Senior Class and
the Religion Faculty chose
Ronald Logan and Laura
Ward as recipients of the
Christian Living Award. Anna
Manarin received the Atlanta
Journal Cup for Outstanding
Senior. Henry Smith received
an appointment to the United
States Naval Academy.
Ben Bergman, junior, will
participate in the Governor’s
Honors Program in science.
The Presbyterian College
Junior Academic
Achievement Award went to
Philipp Gerdes, Juliet Jones,
Thomas Nort, and Elizabeth
Barkley.
Junior Mary Schmitt
received the Harvard Book
Award for her performance in
scholarship and leadership
and junior Chris Benjamin
was honored with the Ibly
Cross Book Award for
outstanding scholarship,
leadership and involvement in
school activities.
The St. Pius Home and
School Association Award for
the Outstanding Sophomore
was presented to Lisa Volmar
for her scholarship, leadership
and service to the school
community.
An award which was
established three years ago in
memory of Mrs. Betty
Patrick, who was English
teacher at St. Pius, was

MARIST BALLERINA Pam
Whitson performed for the Class of
1979 during the Marist graduation
ceremony at Symphony Hall. The event
marked the seventy-eighth
commencement for the Atlanta prep
school. The Marist Class of 1979
includes 110 graduates who will be
attending 51 different colleges and
universities around the country.

The event marked the seventy-eighth class to
graduate from the Atlanta school.
Valedictorian for the graduating class is
Leigh Skaggs and Salutatorian is Jay
Blandford. At commencement, both seniors
received the Harley R. Kimmel Memorial
Award. Skaggs also received the Archbishop
Award as the Catholic senior with the highest
scholastic average and the ATLANTA
JOURNAL Trophy as the best all-around
senior. Tim Hartigan was presented with the
Sedes Sapientiae Award as the senior excelling
in loyalty, scholarship, and service.
