CHARISMA TICS
Atlantans Back From Conference
Eleven Hundred Catholic and Episcopal
bishops, priests, and deacons from across
the nation gathered at the College of
Steubenville in Ohio to attend the recent
National Conference of Priests and
Deacons in the Charismatic Movement.
Attending from the Archdiocese of Atlanta
were Fathers John Kelley, A1 Coen, Phil
O’Hara, Ray Carr and Pat Mallinson, and
Deacon Tom Zaworski. Bishop Charles
Child and Dean David Collins from the
Episcopal diocese of Atlanta also attended.
Bishop Albert H. Ottenweller, who
welcomed the huge gathering and
introduced Archbishop Jean Jadot,
Apostolic Delegate in the U.S., told the
clergy group that he has seen the influence
the gathering has had on the priests of his
diocese. “I have seen an extraordinary
openness among them,” he said.
The Charismatic Renewal Movement
was praised for its good effects on the
Church by the Apostolic Delegate, who
said in part of his address, “I cannot think
of any movement that has so effectively
brought us to expect fully that God has
many more things that he wants to do with
his people than the renewal has.”
Archbishop Jadot noted that the
different functions of modern priests
sometimes distract them from their main
task of concentration on the person of
Jesus. “The immediacy of the presence of
Christ which is experienced in the renewal
cannot but be good for priests,” he
remarked.
Later he noted that priests involved in
the Charismatic Movement have an added
responsibility: the discerment of charisms.
He said it was a pastoral art to “judge the
genuineness and proper use of the
charisms” without extinquishing the Spirit
for others at the same time. Archbishop
Jadot also noted that the Charismatic
Movement is not the only way the Church
is being renewed. “The charismatic renewal
happens to be a prominent and effective
movement within the overall action of the
Spirit of God in one contemporary world.
We cannot think of it as the primary source
of renewal,” the apostolic delegate said.
Archbishop Jadot also read a letter to
the assembly in which Pope John Paul II
encouraged them in their prayerful
endeavors. The Apostolic Delegate
requested the prayers of the group before
he began his address. As the Conference
team laid hands upon him hundreds of
voices prayed in tongues for more than two
minutes.
The thrusting theme of the conference
was to lay claim to the apostolic heritage
of evangelization in prayer and the
preached word. Nationally known leaders
in the charismatic renewal led the
conference.

Halt Of 6 In Vitro’ Funding Wanted
An all-out national
effort to prevent federal
funding of “in vitro”
fertilization research is
being organized by
Americans United for Life,
a national educational and
legal prolife organization.
In vitro fertilization
research, in which human
eggs are fertilized outside a
woman’s body, has
resulted in the deaths of
countless human embryos
since Drs. Steptoe and
Edwards began their work
in England that resulted in
the birth of Louise Brown,
the first “test-tube” baby,
on July 25, 1978.
An American doctor,
Dr. Pierre Soupart of
Vanderbilt University, has
applied to the Department
of Health, Education and
Welfare for federal funding
of in vitro research. In
testimony before the HEW
Ethics Advisory Board, a
committee that held
public hearings on the
matter, Dr. Soupart said
that his research will
involve the fertilization of
450 human eggs over a
three-year period. .He plans
to study the embryos
through chemical analysis,
without subsequent
implantation in women.
The embryos will be
destroyed when his
research is finished,
according to his
testimony.
Americans United for
Life is urging all prolife
supporters to organize in
opposition to the funding
request of Dr. Soupart and
all subsequent attempts to
receive tax funding for in
vitro research.
The public is in a
position to influence these
funding requests through
letters to Joseph Califano,
Secretary of HEW,
according to Patrick A.
Trueman, Executive
Director and General
Counsel of AUL.
“Secretary Califano
recently has called for
more public input on in
vitro fertilization, after the
Ethics Advisory Board
approved funding (on
March 16, 1979),” said
Trueman. “A national
outpouring of in vitro
opposition may make it
easier politically for
Califano to deny the
funding petition.”
In addition to
organizing a letter-writing
effort, AUL has solicited
testimony on in vitro
fertilization from leading
medical, legal and ethical
scholars, including Dr.
Paul Ramsey, the noted
Princeton ethicist AUL has
made efforts to educate
both the prolife movement
and the general public
about the destruction of
human life that results

Trueman cited two
ways in which in vitro
research has resulted in the
deaths of unborn children:
- Research such as Dr.
Soupart’s involves the
destruction of human
embryos which are not
implanted in the mother’s
womb. Even if
implantation is planned,
often several human eggs
are fertilized and only the
“best” embryo is selected
for implantation. The rest
of the growing embryos
are washed down the drain
or preserved on slides to
be examined later.
- Human embryos that
are implanted into the
mother’s womb may not
be normal. If, through
amniocentisis, the unborn
child is found to be
defective, he or she may
be aborted. Dr. Steptoe
acknowledges that there is
no way to guarantee that
children conceived in vitro
will be normal, but added,
“Naturally, we would take
every possible step to
monitor such a pregnancy
and to determine whether
the fetus was abnormal. If
it were, termination would
be necessary.’’
‘Termination’ means
abortion.
“Destruction of human
life is an inherent result of
in vitro fertilization
research,” said Trueman.
“Prolife people who have
resisted tax funding of
abortion on the federal
level and in nearly 40
states would not want this
new door opened to tax
support of the deaths of
unborn children through
in vitro fertilization
research.”

News Update
BY FATHER RICHARD KIERAN
Our parishes are responding to Archbishop
Donnellan’s call for a Year of Outreach to alienated
Catholics and churchless persons. Over 80 percent
have already appointed Lay Outreach Coordinators
and are beginning to formulate plans for the year.
The other parishes are expected to designate their
Coordinators in the near future.
The Lay Outreach Coordinator, usually a member
of the Parish Council, is responsible for coordinating
the parish effort to reach out and share the faith with
alienated Catholics and churchless in the area.
Each of these Lay Outreach Coordinators has
received a package of information and planning
materials, prepared by the Archdiocesan Committee
on Evangelization. They will continue to be the
liaison between their parish and the Committee.
