Our Lady Of Guadalupe Visits
The travels of the
Pilgrim Virgin, a print of
the miraculous painting of
Our Lady of Guadalupe,
began last month in the
Savannah area and reached
St. Joseph Parish, Athens
this week. Sponsored by
the Knights of Columbus
as part of their Marian
Year celebration, the
odyssey of the Pilgrim
The Archbishop refused
to take the Indian
seriously and asked the
neophyte Christian to
bring a sign back from “his
apparition.” When Juan
Diego returned to
Tepeyacac Hill, Our Lady
bade him gather roses
which were growing
profusely in a barren and
rocky area where no
JOHN MCGUIRE (LEFT) and Ray Broussard
Grand Knight and Program Director of Knights of
Columbus Council 6514 in Athens hand Father
William Calhoun (center) Pastor of St. Joseph’s
Church a print of the Pilgrim Virgin, Our Lady of
Guadalupe, which was blessed by Pope John Paul
II in Mexico. The print is to be used as the center
of Marian Devotions throughout Georgia during
the Marian year being celebrated by the Knights
of Columbus.
Virgin began in Mexico
City during the visit of
Pope John Paul II.
When he visited the
Basilica of Our Lady of
Guadalupe, Patroness of
the Americas, the Pope
blessed a number of
prints of the painting
which is displayed in the
shrine. These were taken
to the national convention
o f the Knights of
Columbus in San Diego,
California, last August.
From there, each State
Deputy brought home one
print. As the year
progresses, the papal
blessed print will circulate
from one council of the
Knights of Columbus to
the next and will become
the center of Marian
Devotions.
The story of the Virgin
of Guadalupe is not too
well known by most
American Catholics. It
began in 1531, when Our
Lady of Guadalupe
appeared to Juan Diego,
an Aztec Indian who was a
brand new convert to
Christianity. She asked
him to inform Juan de
Zumarraga, Archbishop of
Mexico City, that she
wished to have a church
built on Tepeyacac Hill,
the site of her apparition
to Juan Diego.
flowers had ever grown
before. The Indian
gathered the flowers and
carried them to the
Archbishop in his cloak.
When he knelt at the feet
of the cleric and spilled
the floweres to the floor,
the church leader fell to
his knees in awe, for there
on the inside of the
Indian’s cactus fiber cloak
was a life-sized painting of
Our Lady of Guadalupe.
The church was built and
the painting has been
displayed there ever since.
The painting has been
examined by numerous
commissions of artists and
no one has been able to
explain its origin. The
cactus fiber of the cloak
should not have lasted
longer than 15 years or so,
yet it remains in perfect
condition today. One
artist noted that the
smoke from thousands of
candles burned over the
centuries should surely
have damaged the
painting, yet it shows no
sign of deterioration.
The experts have
declared that it would
have been impossible to
produce the quality of
paint and the artistic
techniques of the painting
in 16th Century Mexico
which had been conquered
by the Spaniards from the
Aztec Indians only a
decade before the painting
appeared.
The B asi lica of
Guadalupe has been a
favorite shrine of Mexicans
for four centuries. They
identified so with the
Virgin of Guadalupe that
when they began their War
for Independence from
Spain, they carried the
banner of Guadalupe as
they battle flag. Our Lady
of Guadalupe was declared
patroness of Mexico and
just recently has been
declared Patroness of the
Americas.
The Pilgrim Virgin print
should soon begin
appearing in Atlanta
churches.

Bible Week Theme
WASHINGTON (NC) - “Sharing the Word of
God in the Home” is the theme for the Catholic
observance of the 39th annual National Bible
Week, Nov. 13-25. Bishop Thomas C. Kelly,
general secretary of the United States Catholic
Conference, said the theme was chosen “as a
prelude to and support of ‘The Year of the
Family’ (1980), a time for celebrating and
reaffirming the importance of the family.”
Teen Marriages
CHARLOTTETOWN, Prince Edward Island
(NC) - The Diocese of Charlottetown has issued
regulations for teen-age marriages in an effort to
curb the great number of marriage failures among
youthful couples. All teen-age marriages in the
diocese now require final approval from the
chancery office after preliminary approval by the
parish priest, according to regulations which went
into effect in October.
Helen Hayes Award
NEW YORK (NC) - Helen Hayes will be
honored with the 1979 Hoey Award by the
Catholic Interracial Council of New York at a
benefit on Dec. 3. Miss Hayes was called “a
distinguished Catholic who has worked to combat
racial and religious bigotry and discrimination in
our society.”
Condemn Assassination
CHINANDEGA, NICARAGUA (NC) - The
assassination of Father Roger Sandoval Jarquin, a
parish pastor and acknowledged Sandinista, has
been strongly condemned by government and
church leaders. One source indicated the murder
could be a reprisal for the killing of Pablo Emilio
Salazar, a leading military figure in the previous
Somoza government who became known as
“Commander Bravo” for his harsh repression of
Sandinista outbreaks.
Racial Harmony
BOSTON (NC) - Cardinal Humberto Medeiros
of Boston issued an impassioned call for racial
harmony following a meeting with some 40
religious and civic leaders. The cardinal appealed
to the people of Boston, especially the young, to
end the violence that erupted following the
shooting of a black football player, Darryl
Williams, at a game in Charlestown, a largely
white district of the city.
DEACON CHARLES KERSCHER, presently
serving at Corpus Christi Parish in Atlanta,
reviewed the program for the 1979 Alumni
Reunion with Father Otto Bucher, O.F.M. Cap.,
Academic Dean of the Sacred Heart School of
Theology during “homecoming” festivities held at
the seminary located in Hales Corners, WI.
Kerscher, 62, retired from he Atlanta Post Office
in 1972 and studied at the theologate under the
sponsorship of Archbishop Thomas A. Donnellan.
The deacon is a widower with two children and
seven grandchildren. Sacred Heart School of
Theology specializes in the education and training
of adult candidates for the priesthood and is the
largest seminary in the United States with such
specialization. Forty dioceses and nine religious
orders are represented in the present enrollment.
A native of Omaha, Nebraska, Deacon
Kerscher is a graduate of Georgia Tech and served
in the U.S. Army for over seven years. His son
and daughter live in Duluth, Ga. with their
.families.
