Inside TV News
BY JOHN P. ZARRELLA
Do you ever wonder what
happened to all the old, familiar
faces of a few years back? You
know, that crop of zanies on Eleven
Alive with all their “bits and
costumes”? Ah, yes, those were the
days! You never knew what to
expect in the newsroom.
When 1 first came to work for
Channel Eleven, it was early in March
of ’77. The talk of Atlanta was not
crime and violence but, Steve Somers
and that famous, now memorable
and always laughable (except for
Steve!) motorcycle jump.
Can you imagine, me, a newsman
reared on Woodward and Bernstein
arriving in Atlanta to take on a new
job and suddenly not so sure I was
going to be doing journalism at all. It
was, at first, frightening. After all,
television news is “show biz.”
Things have drastically changed-
since then. At Channel Eleven, we
put away the “bits and costumes”
and the “hats and horns.” We found
out the hard way that Atlantans
wanted their news straight! Atlantans
fit into the mold of the old
doctor-patient routine, “Okay Doc,
give it to me straight. I can take it!”
Here is one newsman who thanks
all of you for wanting it right
between the eyes. I couldn’t be
happier.
Television news is, however, a
strange business. What didn’t work
here might work somewhere else.
Someone like Steve Somers whose
‘ bits” didn’t work in Atlanta might
do all right in a place like Los
Angeles. Believe it or not, some of
the things that bombed in our city
are working well for Steve in L.A. Of
course, we always knew those West
Coast folks were a little crazy!
I can remember one bright,
summer day in 1977. The Braves had
just dropped a double header to
Chicago in Wrigley Field. Steve
Somers went on the six o’clock news
and proceeded to graphically
illustrate the Braves dismal position
in the cellar of the National League
West. As the “low lights” of the
Braves’ season were shown on the air
(strikeouts, booted grounders,
dropped flies), the musical
accompaniment was from that hit
tune, “Dial a Prayer.” When the
prayer was over, and the camera
came back to Steve, he said with a
half-cracked smile, “Please don’t get
upset or offended. If God didn’t have
a sense of humor, He wouldn’t have
created me!”
Steve has reportedly played that
same tune for Dodger fans. In fact,
he took it one step further in L.A.
having a headstone engraved with the
words, “L.A. Dodgers, may they rest
in peace.” I understand that was even
a bit much for the heathens on the
coast!
Most of the exiled Channel Eleven
alumnus have done well. You
remember Russ Nichols the “News
Hawk,” the guy who smashed TV
sets, burned books and fought with
crooks? He is also in Los Angeles and
like Steve, doing very well.
Then there was Joe Focke, the
weekend weatherman. He was the
fellow who dressed up in a
Weatherman suit and fried eggs on
cars. Joe has bounced around a
couple jobs. I think he's taking some
time off right now. Don’t forget Gail
Janus, who did weather Monday
through Friday. She's with an Ad
Agency here in Atlanta. Dave
Sullivan, the former weekend sports
caster is working in Pittsburgh.
If I ever leave Channel Eleven or
Atlanta, I’ll drop you a line from
time to time and let you know where
I am. I’ll even fill you in on all that
latest gossip in the wonderful world
of TV news.

Sinatra Entitled To Sacraments
BY NC NEWS SERVICE
Frank Sinatra’s
marriage to his first wife
was annulled by the
church more than a year
ago and his current
marriage was validated,
making the famous singer
and actor free to receive
the church’s sacraments,
NC News Service has
learned.
S i n atra was observed
and photographed
receiving Communion at a
Columbus Day Mass Oct. 8
at St. Patrick’s Cathedral
in New York. The
photograph, published in
several newspapers, raised
questions about the
entertainer’s status in the
church.
A Sinatra publicist in
New York City said
Sinatra had “no statement
on the question as to
whether he is back in the
church.” But the publicist
also remarked that “the
picture speaks for itself.”
Sources told NC News
that the annulment was
granted through the
Archdiocese of New York,
but NC News received
other indications that the
annulment was given in
Rome.
NC News also learned
that after the annulment
was granted, the
Archdiocese of New York
had a priest witness an
exchange of vows between
Sinatra and his current
wife, Barbara Marx, in a
private ceremony at St.
Patrick’s Cathedral, thus
making the marriage
sacramentally valid in the
eyes of the church.
The Archdiocese of
New York has steadfastly
refused comment on
Sinatra’s reception of
Communion or his marital
status, saying it would not
be “appropriate” to say
anything. A spokesperson
at St. Patrick’s Cathedral
also denied that the
marriage was validated
there.
The photograph of
Sinatra receiving
Communion first was
d i s t r i b u ted to daily
newspapers by United
Press International. After
the photo appeared in a
Pittsburgh paper, NC News
obtained the picture from
UPI and distributed it to
Catholic newspapers.
A PHOTOGRAPH of Frank Sinatra receiving
Communion at St. Patrick’s Cathedral has stirred
up a lot of controversy. The much-married
singer’s status in the eyes of the Catholic Church
is explained in the accompanying story.

Catholic papers which
published the picture
received a number of
inquiries from subscribers
wondering how Sinatra
could be free to receive
Communion when he has
been divorced and
remarried three times.
Sinatra, 63, was born in
Hoboken, N.J., and raised
Catholic. He first married
Nancy Barbato in 1939,
but that marriage ended in
divorce after three
children: Nancy, Frank Jr.
and Christine.
He later married and
divorced Ava Gardner and
Mia Farrow before
marrying Barbara Marx in
1 976 at the Rancho
Mirage, Calif., home of
former ambassador to
Great Britain Walter H.
Annenberg.
Barbara Marx was
encouraged to convert to
Catholicism by Sinatra’s
mother shortly before
Sinatra’s mother died in
1977, according to a story
on Sinatra published in the
October issue of Ladies’
Home Journal.
Sinatra resides in the
Palm Springs, Calif., area,
which is in the Diocese of
San Bernadino.
An annulment, unlike a
divorce, is a recognition by
the church that a
sacramental marriage never
existed between a couple
from its beginning. An
annulment can be granted
for one of several reasons,
such as lack of true marital
commitment, psychologi
cal incapacity to enter a
marriage bond,
immaturity, undue
influence from forces
outside the marriage, or
inability to freely marry in
the church.
According to church
marriage law procedure,
no annulments would be
necessary for Sinatra’s
second and third marriages
because they were never
valid in the eyes of the
church.
The question of
Sinatra’s status in the
church recalled a similar
situation in 1949 when
entertainer Rudy Vallee
married his fourth wife in
an Oakland, Calif.,
ceremony sanctioned by
the church.
That time, the
Archdiocese of Los
Angeles announced that
Vallee, a baptized
Catholic, was free to
marry in the church
because his first three
marriages were “purely
legal contracts” never valid
in the church.
