TIMELY MESSAGES appeared on hundreds
of placards and banners as Atlantans turned out
to march against crime in the city.
Anti-Crime March—
(Continued from page 1)
“Our city’s problems
are not the result of Your
abandoning us, but of our
abandoning You. You
have never left us, and we
know You never will. But
we leave You a little bit
more, moving a bit farther
away every time we leave
unanswered any act in this
city which strikes out at
the dignity of the human
person or the sacredness of
human life.
“Come now and change
our hearts; give us the gift
of Your spirit to renew us
as Your people and
Atlanta as your city.”
The Reverend Cameron
Alexander of Antioch
Baptist Church and the
Reverend Jim Bevis of
Brookvalley Church of
Christ are the co-chairmen
of ARMAC and planned
the Crime Prevention
March with the assistance
of the ARMAC Executive
Board, of which
Archbishop Donnellan is a
member.

Llegan Hermanas Para El Apostolado Hispano
POR MICHAEL MOTES
Una solicitude enviada
hace casi dos anos tuvo
respuesta favorable con la
Uegada a la arquidiocesis
de dos Misioneras, Siervas
de la Santisima Trinidad
(MSBT).
La busqueda de las
Hermanas para trabajar,
con la siempre ereciente
poblacion hispana,
comenzo cuando el Padre
Richard Kieran, cuya
actuacion con los hispanos
es evidente en el
movimiento de los
Cursillos de Cristiandad,
escribio a la casa principal
de MSBT indagando si
habria algunas Hermanas
disponibles para trabajar
enla educacion religiosa en
Atlanta.
J Como el trabajo entre
■o la poblacion de habla
* hispana es uno de los
S prineipales de dicha Orden
* religiosa, comenzo en la
2 Orden la busqueda para
satisfacer la solicitud del
Padre Kieran.
Asi fue que llegaron a
Atlanta las Hermanas
Teresa Ahern y Lourdes
Teresa Toro a fines de
Agosto, comenzando su
trabajo el primero de
Septiembre.
La Hermana Teresa esta
trabajando en la educacion
religiosa de adultos entre
los de habla hispana a nivel
arquidiocesano y la
Hermana Lourdes esta
trabajando con los jovenes
en las Parroquias del
Inmaculado Corazon de
Maria (IHM) y dela
Catedrai de Cristo Rey
(Christ The King). Ambas
estan coordinando sus
esfuerzos por medio de la
Oficina de Educacion
Religiosa de la
Arquidiocesia.
Ademas de su trabajo
en educacion religiosa, la
Hermana Teresa actuara
como Coordinadora de la
Informacion Hispana para
el GEORGIA BULLETIN,
y como tal sera
responsable de la columna
hispana semanal que
aparece en dicha
publicacion.
La Hermana Teresa,
nacida en Brooklyn,
pertenece desde 1957 a la
Orden MSBT y ha servido
como Coordinadora
Pastoral de Educacion
Religiosa para los de habla
hispana y como
Co-Directora de la Oficina
Diocesana en el
Apostolado de habla
hispana, en la Diocesis de
Worcester, Massachusetts.
Con anterioridad a su
trabajo en Worcester, la
Hermana Teresa sirvio en
distintas ciudades en el
apostolado hispano y
estuvo siete anos en Puerto
Rico trabajando en el
ministerio pastoral.
La Hermana Teresa dice
que en lugar prominente
de su lista de preferencias,
dentrol del apostolado
escogido por ella, esta la
“preparacion de los laicos
en sus propositos de
participacion en la Iglesia
en todas las formas
posibles.”
Ella tambien trabaja
para acrecentar la
busqueda y logro de los
compromisos basicos de la
comunidad cristiana, por
medio de programas
orientados para los adultos
y la familia.
La Hermana Lourdes
trabajo en conjunto con
los Servicios Sociales
Catolicos de la
Arquidiocesis de San Juan,
en su Puerto Rico natal,
antes de ingresar en la
Orden MSBT en 1973. En
su anterior trabajo, estuvo
actuando en un programa
para el desarrollo de la
comunidad en las areas
pobres de la ciudad de San
Juan y estuvo activa en el
ministerio de la juventud a
nivel parroquial.
Desde que ingreso en la
Orden, ella ha estado
trabajando con grupos de
jovenes para “desarrollar
su fe y estimular sus
valores Cristianos.”
Ambas Hermanas estan
de acuerdo en que hay una
gran necesidad de su
apostolado en la
comunidad de habla
hispana.
“Ahora estamos
conociendo a las
personas,” dice la hermana
Lourdes. “Estamos
tratando de ver que es lo
que las personas quieren y
necesitan y que es lo que
podemos hacer para llenar
esa necesidad.”
“Realmente no
queremos parecer personas
de afuera metidas en la
comunidad hispana” dice
la Hermana Teresa. “Lleva
tiempo ser parte de una
comunidad, y esto es
precisamente lo que
intentamos hacer ahora.”
Dice la Hermana Teresa
que esta tratando de ser
muy cuidadosa en
encountrar que es lo que
se necesita hacer.”
Actualmente, ambas
estamos tratando de hacer
tantos contactos como es
posible entre los dirigentes
de los varios grupos v>
hispanos de 1 a i-
arquidiocesis, tales como §
el Cursillo de Mjueres y el
Secretariado, asi como
tambien con el Grupo
combinado del Cursillo
Ingles-Espanol.”
La Hermana Lourdes
quiere actuar con los
grupos de juventud y le
gustaria ver la formacion
de un grupo SEARCH para
los hispanos.
Sinembargo, observa
que con frecuencia la
juventud esta mas
interesada en grupos que
hablen ingles.” Nosotros
deseamos que ellos no
olviden sus raices hispanas
y que podamos hacer algo
para recordarles la
importancia de esto.”
Ambas Hermanas
participaron en una
reunion de trabajo para
dirigentes de varios grupos
que hablan espanol, a fines
de Septiembre. Tambien
estan informandose de
varios proyectos que estan
ahora ejecutandose en
relacion con el Ano de la
Evangelizacion, y, que
ellas comentan, estan
siendo muy bien recibidos
entre los de habla hispana.

Cardinals Study Renewal And Finance
(Continued from page 1)
Vatican Secretariat of
State, were allowed to
witness the proceedings of
the first night. Cardinal
Agostino Casaroli, papal
secretary of state, was also
scheduled to address the
cardinals at the opening
session.
The pope arrived for
the evening meeting about
two minutes past 5 p.m.
The meeting opened with
a short prayer in Latin
asking the Holy Spirit to
bless the work of the
assembly and make it
fruitful!
Cardinal Confalonieri
thanked the pope, in the
name of the cardinals, for
asking them to meet with
him and share their views.
He recalled that such a
special meeting of
cardinals with the pope
was once a regular custom,
which the pope was
reviving. When the meeting
was first officially
announced, Cardinal
Confalonieri had said that
it was the first of its kind
in over four centuries.
The cardinal also
expressed the gratitude of
the cardinals for the
pope’s work during his
first year in office. He
singled out the pope’s
teachings and his world
travels. The success of
these travels is “hard to
describe,’’ said the
cardinal.
Earlier that day the
pope and 108 of the
cardinals had concelebrat-
ed a memorial Mass in St.
Peter’s Basilica for the
cardinals who died in the
previous 12 months. Other
cardinals participated in
the Mass but did not
concelebrate.
Prior to the opening
session, Father Romeo
Panciroli, Vatican press
spokesman, said other
speakers during the
sessions would include:
-- Cardinal Gabriel
Marie Garrone, prefect of
the Vatican Congregation
for Catholic Education, on
the church and modern
culture.
-- Cardinal Egidio
Vagnozzi, president of the
Prefecture of the
Economic Affairs of the
Holy See, and Cardinal
Giuseppe Caprio, president
of the Administration of
the Patrimony of the Holy
See, on Vatican finances.
The sessions are closed
to the press.
Father Panciroli
indicated that none of the
papers delivered would be
made public. The pope
gave the cardinals
permission to extend the
meeting at least one day
beyond the scheduled
closing of Nov. 8 if they
need the extra time to
complete their discussions,
Father Panciroli added.
With 120 cardinals in
attendance, the meeting --
officially labeled a
“Plenary Session of the
Sacred College of
Cardinals” - set a new
record for any business
meeting of the world’s
cardinals. Previous largest
gatherings were the two
conclaves in 1978 that
elected Pope John Paul I
and Pope John Paul II.
There were 111 cardinals
in each conclave.
One reason for the
record is that for this
meeting, unlike the
conclaves from which
cardinals over the age of
80 were excluded, Pope
John Paul invited all 129
of the world’s cardinals,
including those over 80.
Some of the 10 over-80
cardinals, including retired
Cardinal Lawrence Shehan
of Baltimore, 81, were
among those at the
meeting.
Others were unable to
come for health reasons,
such as retired Cardinal
Patrick O’Boyle of
Washington, 83. He was
the only U.S. cardinal
unable to attend.
There were early
rumors that the pope or
Cardinal Casaroli would
preside over the sessions.
But Father Panciroli said
that the pope appointed as
three presidents the senior
cardinals of the three
orders of cardinals.
The chief of these is
Cardinal Confalonieri, 86,
senior cardinal-bishop and
dean of the College of
Cardinals.
The senior cardinal-
-priest, 89-year-oid
Cardinal Carlos Carmelo
de Vasconcellos Motta of
Aparecida, Brazil, was
unable to attend. In his
absence, Cardinal
Giuseppe Siri of Genoa,
Italy, was named a
president as the ranking
cardinal-priest.
The senior cardinal-dea
con is Italian Cardinal
Sergio Pignedoli, president
of the Vatican Secretariat
for Non-Christians.
The 9:30 a.m.
La tin-language Mass on
Nov. 5 was a simple affair,
considering the august
body of church leaders
present.
The pope, in red
vestments, presided at the
Altar of the Chair in the
apse of St. Peter’s Basilica.
The concelebrating
cardinals, also vested in
red, lined up in three rows
on each side of the altar.
There was no homily.
Between 4,000 and
5,000 people attended the
Mass.
Among the 10 cardinals
who died within the past
12 months, for whom the
Mass was offered, were
two from the United
States: retired Cardinal
James McIntyre of Los
Angeles and Cardinal John
Wright, prefect of the
Vatican Congregation for
Clergy.
Several cardinals who
stopped by the NC News
Service’s Rome bureau
after the Mass declined to
comment on the meeting
that would begin that
evening.
Their refusal to
comment reinforced
wideread speculation that
much of the meeting’s
contents would be kept a
secret and that the
cardinals did not know
how much they would be
able to reveal.
Cardinal Humberto
Medeiros of Boston told
NC News that he had no
idea what they would be
free to discuss.

PARTICIPATING with Archbishop Donnellan
in a Legislative Follow-Up panel discussion at the
Respect Life Day was Cheatham E. Hodges, Jr. of
Augusta, Executive Secretary of the Georgia
Catholic Conference.
Respect Life Day—
(Continued from page 1)
Joseph’s Village to
improve the quality of life
for emotionally disturbed
children and their families.
I regard this as a service to
the community.
“This archdiocese
supports rehabilitation of
the homes of poor, aged
people. It conducts a
testing and counseling
program of exceptional
children. It support a
cancer home where loving
and devoted care is given
to those in the last stages
of life.
“If such activities
violate the rights of our
pickets - so be it!”
A rchbishop Donnellan
was one of nearly a dozen
speakers at the series of
workshops and addresses
and used as his overall
theme, “The Church At
the Service Of Human
Life.”
Dignity Of Man
‘‘The Church is
solicitous for the dignity
of man since in man, the
image of God and the
humanity of Christ are at
issue,” the archbishop
stated. “The Church seeks
the progress of man; she
does so because God made
man worthy of such
solicitude. But also
because God so made her
that she cannot do other
than love and serve man.
“Our point of focus is
the human person. The
progress of the human
person and the advance of
society itself hinge on each
other. Every human being
is of priceless value made
in God’s image, redeemed
by Christ, and called to an
eternal destiny.”
Quoting from THE
CHURCH IN OUR DAY,
Archbishop Donnellan
told his audience,
“Indignity, injustice, and
inhumanity at any time, in
any place, toward any man
or woman or child, should
arouse in us a deep and
burning concern.”
'Firm and Clear'
He added, “The
Christian principle of
respect for human life at
every stage of its existence
is firm and clear . . . God’s
commandment, ‘Thou
shalt not kill’ uncondition-
'ally forbids all taking of
innocent human life, from
its beginnings in the
womb, until the end that
God, not man, has set for
it. We must have firm
respect for human life as
coming from God’s hands
at the very first moment
of conception and as
remaining under God’s
care on earth until He
takes it back to Himself in
death.”
The archbishop
reminded those attending
that the Church has
labeled abortion and
infanticide as “unspeak
able crimes” and stated, “I
believe this can serve to
remind us how important
it is that we do not permit
ourselves to be labeled
with the mentally negative
phrase: ‘The Church is
against abortion.’ Indeed it
is. But more accurately,
and more importantly, the
Church is FOR life. The
Church has been saying
YES to unborn life,
without any hesitation or
reservation, for two
thousand years . . . The
Church is not simply
against abortion, she is
FOR LIFE. And for
human kind. And for
human dignity and social
justice.”
Moral Principles
A rchbishop Donnellan
stated that those who
would argue “that unless
the unborn life can be
assured of a certain
quality ... or that if the
existence of the unborn
life seriously lessens the
prospect of an acceptable
mode of life for the
mother or her family, then
the unborn life cannot be
said to have a right to
exist” have been “turning
moral principles upside
down.”
In addition to
delivering the opening
address at the Respect Life
Day assembly, Archbishop
Donnellan also closed the
meeting as principal
celebrant and homilist at
the Liturgy.
Other Speakers
Among the other
keynote speakers and
workshop leaders were
Patrick Trueman,
Executive Director and
General Counsel of

Mrs. Judi Lindsey,
