Vatican’s Financial Problems—

the church effectively, in
order to be able to realize
the pastoral program of
the (Second Vatican)
Council, also has need of
financial means,” he said.
In his final speech,
which closed the Nov. 9
session 20 minutes late at
1:20 p.m., the pope also
addressed the other two
meeting topics — Vatican
administration and the
church and modern
culture — and hinted that
future similar meetings of
the cardinals are also
likely.
“In a certain sense, this
meeting was the
introduction to a further
exchange of ideas and
pastoral concerns,” he
commented.
The 123rd cardinal to
join the meeting was
Cardinal Jose Clement
Maurer of Sucre, Bolivia,
said Father Romeo
Panciroli, Vatican press
officer.
The extraordinary
meeting of cardinals was
originally scheduled for
Nov. 5-8 but extended an
extra day by the cardinals
because of the volume of
work. It marked the first
time in more than four
centuries that a pope has
specifically called the
world’s cardinals together
to advise him on church
problems.
Vatican sources said
that the cardinals’ advice is
not binding, but is likely
to be given considerable
weight by the pope in
making decisions.
The pope called the
meeting “an important
step on the path of
collegiality, in the spirit of
the Second Vatican
Council’’ and a
“reanimation of this
wonderful institution, the
College of Cardinals.”
On the subject of the
organization and
effectiveness of the various
departments of the Roman
Curia, the Vatican’s
central administration, the
pope commented:
“The suggestion,
counsels and proposals will
be attentively received,
which with a sincere love
for the good of the
universal church you have
brought and are bringing
out here, in the very heart
of the church, so that the
institution of the Roman
Curia, so manifold and
complex, might be
adapted to be ever more
qualified, precious and
useful to the bishops and
the bishops’ conferences
of the whole world.”
The pope stressed his
own personal interest in
the church and modern
culture, the third major
theme of the meeting.
“Nor has there escaped
from you the interest that
I, with the help of my
direct collaborators,
personally intend to
dedicate to the problems
of culture, which was an
object of particular study
by the Second Vatican
Council and which awaits
a more eager contribution
from all us men of the
church,” he said.
The key area of the
church and culture that
the pope had asked the
cardinals to discuss was z
the Pontifical Academy of
Sciences, a papally formed
membership organization
of up to 70 leading
mathematicians and
research scientists around
the world whose purpose
is to promote scientific
development. The pope
was scheduled to join in a
special session of the
academy on Nov. 10, the
day after the cardinals’
meeting.
In his opening talk to
the cardinals several days
earlier, the pope indicated
he was thinking of
expanding the academy’s
membership and purpose
to include the “human”
sciences such as
anthropology, psychology
and sociology as well as
the physical sciences.

saw everyone, one by one,
and I can say that the
hostages, taking into
account their situation, are
not doing badly.” He
added: “Certainly, they
are distressed about their
lack of freedom, but this
question of freedom is one
which 1 cannot address
right now.”
Asked about the
petition allegedly signed
by 33 of the hostages
asking President Carter to
return the deposed shah to
Iran, the papal emissary
said, “I was able to talk
about this with three of
the hostages and they
assured me that there was
no coercion brought upon
them.”
Archbishop Bugnini
also met briefly with the
estimated 400 students
controlling the U.S.
embassy in Teheran. “I
told these young people, I
begged them, to forget the
past and look to the
future,” he said.
(Meanwhile, Italian
police arrested about 70
Iranian students Nov. 11
when they tried to hold a
pro-Khomeini
demonstration in St.
Peter’s Square during the
pope’s noon Angelus talk.
(Carrying banners
reading “Death to the
Servants of the
Americans’’ and
“American Hands Off
Iran,” the students were
removed from the square
shortly before the pope
appeared in his apartment
window.

(The students were
taken to police
headquarters, booked and
then released. The pope’s
Angelus talk contained no
reference to the current
situation in Iran.
(In a related
development, former
Iranian Prime Minister
Shampour Bakhtiar told
the English weekly NOW
in London that more than
7,000 people have been
killed in Iran since
Khomeini took power
after the shah was
deposed.

the collegiality that was so
much stressed in the
Second Vatican Council.”
Cardinal Shehan was
not present at the 1978
conclaves because he is
over the age limit for
cardinals allowed to elect a
pope.
Describing Pope John
Paul II as “his usual
cordial and vigorous self,”
the 81-year-old Cardinal
Shehan said the nearly six
hours of meetings each
day were “no small
amount of meetings for
old men like myself.” But
that they gave him an
opportunity “to become
acquainted much more
intimately with the other
cardinals.”
More than a day and a
half was devoted to work
within six language groups,
of which the English-lan
guage group was the
largest, with participants
from the United States,
Canada, Australia, New
Zealand, South Africa,
India, South Korea, Puerto
Rico and Sri Lanka, the
cardinal said.
Cardinal John J. Krol
of Philadelphia was elected
president of the
English-language group
and Cardinal Terence
Cooke of New York was
its recording secretary.
One of the most
significant results of the
meeting, Cardinal Shehan
said, was that “the myth
of the excessive wealth of
the Vatican was
demolished once and for
all.”
It was revealed at the
end of the meeting that
the Vatican projects a
$20,240,000 deficit for
1979.
“it’s only been since
Vatican II that this myth
was built up,” the
Baltimore prelate said.
“But there is no evidence
of excessive wealth,
particularly when you
consider the size of the
‘corporation.’”
Cardinal John Cody of
Chicago described the
meeting as “very
successful” and said he
was “highly pleased” with
its results.
“The holy father also
seemed very pleased,
although I cannot speak
for him,” he added.

stay off any form of direct
welfare assistance if at all
possible. He noted that the
unemployment rate for all
refugees who have been
resettled in Atlanta has
remained a mere 3%, a
national record in
resettlement programs.

“Anyone willing to share
in any way at all can call

said.
“In past efforts to
obtain help for refugees,
we have had superb
cooperation. We have been
doubly blessed with the

community and the
industriousness of the
refugees themselves.”

this tragic influx of
Vietnamese refugees. We
hope they will respond to
these poor people so
sorely in need of hope and

POR ANGEL LOPEZ
Han transcurido varias semanas desde la esplendorosa
peregrinacion de 7 dias de su Santidad, el Papa Juan Pablo
II a los Estados Unidos. Su personalidad sensilla y
carismatica ha caiitivado el corazon de millones de
personas en la nacion norteamericana. Octubre siempre
sera una fecha muy recordada para los cristianos en este
pais.
Sin duda alguna, el Papa esta cumpliendo con el
mandato que le encomendo Jesucristo a los apostoles al
decirle, “vayan por todo el mundo y anuncien la Buena
Nueva a toda la ereacion” (Me. 16,15). Juan Pablo II esta
cumpliendo con esa mision a traves de sus visitas a
diferentes paises del mundo.
Karol Wojtyla, es el nombre de Juan Pablo II, nacio en
Polonia en una ciudad llanada Wadowice el 18 de mayo
de 1920. Su madre murio cuando el apenas tenia 9 anos
de edad. Un dia al regresar de la eseuela se encontro con
que no tenia madre. Esta murio repentinamente. Trabajo
duramente en las canteras de piedra con su papa y en una
fabrica.
De pequeno fue un hombre inteligente. Curso estudios
en lengua y literature. Se doctora en teologia y mas tarde
decidio hacer otro doctorado en filosofia. Se ha cultivado
en la escritura y poesia siendo asi autor de libros, articulos
y poemas.
En un ano que lleva como Papa ha visitado a su tierra
natal, Polonia, a Irlanda, Mejico, Santo Domingo y
Estados Unidos. El Papa, que habla once (11) idiomas, en
cada pais que visita se dirige a los ciudadanos en la lengua
particular de cada nacion.
Su visita a Estados Unidos ha sido un acontecimiento
historico de trascendencia unica. Peregrino por varios
estados de la nacion, y a cada conglomerado le dirige un
mensaje especial. Ha retado la nacion en diversos temas
como: el libertinaje sexual, el aborto, la desigualdad
social, el materialismo y otros.
En las Naciones Unidas hablo de derechos humanos y
libertad diciendo: “la paz se ve amenazada por cualquier
violacion de derechos humanos y las Naciones Unidas
pueden cumplir su mision de mantener la paz, solamente
si aplican la Declaracion Universal de Derechos Humanos
de 1948.”
Hablo en contra del capitalismo exhortando a los ricos
a compartir con los pobres. En Nueva York dice: “Mi
corazon esta con los pobres, con esos que estan solos y
abandonados en la metropoli.”
El Papa es claro y especifico en sus mensajes. Asi ere
San Pablo cuando se dirigia a los Corintios, los Romanos a
los Efesios. La voz de Juan Pablo es la voz del Profeta
Amos que denuncia las injusticias de su pueblo y defiende
al oprimido. Cristo es el centro de la historia y del
hombre. En su primera homilia en Polonia, el cual es un
pais comunista, dice, “excluir a Cristo de la historia del
hombre es un acto contra el hombre”, y mas adelante
dice, “buscando a Dios en la oracion, el hombre debe
encontrarse a si mismo siendo semejante a Dios.”
Un ano en el papado y ha atriado a multitudes, a
reflexionar sobre la vida cristiana en el hombre. Sobre el
derecho a la vida, el libertinaje sexual, el aborto, la
desintegracion de la familia. Sus visitas a Estados Unidos y
los demas paises son “con un motivo religioso y espiritual
en naturaleza.” El dice que nuestras decisiones deben
reflejar a Cristo. Cristo es amor, y la libertad verdadera
esta en Cristo.
Estados Unidos es una sociedad pluraiista, secularizada,
materialista, donde sel a tiene mas respeto a un animal que
a un ser humano, donde se practican millones de abortos
anuales; sin embargo el Papa viene a hablar de la dignidad
del hombre y la responsabilidad del cristiano y el pueblo
le escucha con mucha atencion.
La gente esta hambrienta de un lider religioso como el
Papa Juan Pablo II. El, como pastor de la Iglesia Universal
tree unidad y paz; en otras palabras, transmite el mensaje
de Jesucristo, de que todos vivamos unidos en Cristo y
luchemos por el reino de los cielos bajo un solo rebano y
un solo pastor.
