Seminar Looks At Human Race
BY SHEILA MALLON
A two-day seminar entitled “Whatever
Happened to the Human Race” will be
held here at the World Congress Center on
December 7 and 8.
The seminar will deal with our rapid yet
subtle loss of human rights and offer an
alternative.
According to Frank A. Schaeffer, a
well-known Protestant theologian,
philosopher and author, “the destruction
of human life, young and old, is being
sanctioned on an ever increasing scale by
the medical profession, by the courts, by
parents and by a silent society.”
He is joined in his concern by Dr. C.
Everett Koop, who is Surgeon in Chief at
Philadelphia Hospital. He is the doctor who
led a team of surgeons in the successful
separation of Siamese twins in 1974.
The two-day seminar will feature the
premiere of a five episode color film series
“Whatever Happened to the Human Race.”
There will be lectures and discussions with
Dr. Schaeffer and Dr. Koop and Edith
Schaeffer asking if we can “accept the
destruction of human rights.”
According to the Koop-Schaeffer team,
choices are being made today which
undermine human rights at the most basic
level. Practices once labeled “unthinkable”
are now considered.
The film series will call for a Christian
stand against these choices and argues a
strong case for the right of the unborn, the
imperfect and the elderly to life.
The producers hope that by the
presentation of this seminar in major cities
throughout the land, a challenge will be
issued to all of us “to be people in this
impersonal age.”
The cost of the two days will be adult,
$28, student, $24, group $22.00. Those
interested in attending at the group rate
should contact the Archdiocesan Pro-Life
office at 881-0956 or Christian Action for
Life at 939-2229.

Famous Namesake
BELLUNO, ITALY (NC) - There’s a new
Albino in the family of the late Pope John Paul I,
the former Cardinal Albino Luciani. Pia Luciani
Basso, the eldest niece of the pope and the one
considered closest to him during his lifetime, gave
birth to her third child in the San Gervasio
Hospital in Belluno and named him for her uncle.
Atheists File Suit
TUCSON, ARIZ. (NC) - The Arizona chapter
of American Atheists filed suit in superior court
opposing the Tucson city council’s practice of
opening each of its meetings with a prayer. The
suit was filed when American Atheists founder,
Madalyn Murray O’Hair, was in Tucson for a visit.
Irish Bishops’ Pastoral
DUBLIN, IRELAND (NC) - The Irish Catholic
Bishops’ Conference has asked influential sectors
of society to apply the call for peace in Northern
Ireland made by Pope John Paul II during his visit
in September. The call was issued in a pastoral
letter read in all Catholic churches in Ireland and
Northern Ireland.
Interreligious Award
WASHINGTON (NC) - Monsignor George G.
Higgins, secretary for special concerns of the U.S.
Catholic Conference, received the first
interreligious award of Religion in American Life
at a luncheon during the meeting of the National
Conference of Catholic Bishops. Monsignor
Higgins “Is a role model for every clergyman in
America,” said Rabbi Joseph B. Glaser, RIAL
board chairman, in presenting the award. “He
reflects honor not only on his own church but on
all religion in American life.
Vocations Increase
LONDON (NC) - The number of vocations to
the diocesan priesthood in England and Wales is
increasing, according to figures provided by the
secretary of the Bishops’ Commission for Priestly
Formation. There were 150 new major seminary
students in 1979, in comparison to 112 a year
from 1975 to 1978, he said. His report added
that, without a rapid increase in vocations, there
would be about 900 fewer diocesan priests in 20
years. The current number is 3,800.
