Inside TV News
BY JOHN P. ZARRELLA
Christmas is just around the corner,
there aren’t more than 10 days left to
get that shopping done. For most of us,
it will be a happy time for family and
friends to gather and laugh and eat and
put all the trials and dilemmas of the
world aside.
It may not be a time of celebration
for the families of the Americans held
hostage in Iran. We’ll have to keep our
fingers crossed on that score.
And, it won’t be a happy time for
the family of Robert Shook. Late this
past Saturday night, Robert was out
cruising in his new Firebird. He never
made it home that night, wrapping the
car around a telephone pole on Ponce
DeLeon. Police say Robert was speeding
and lost control. That is really not the
issue.
Robert may have been the victim of
a combination of foolish circumstances.
It seems that one of our photographers,
Frank Ambrose, saw the accident. He
called the newsroom and spoke with the
weekend producer, Len Pagano, who
called Grady ambulance. Grady told
Pagano to call Dekalb EMS. Both
ambulance services said they would
handle it. That all happened before
midnight.
Twenty-five minutes later, there was
still no ambulance on the scene, a
doctor and an off duty police officer
did all they could for Robert Shook. He
was lying in a pool of his own blood
dying and without emergency help,
there wasn’t much the two men could
do.
At that same time, the photographer
called back to the station frantically,
“Where’s the ambulance?” The
producer called Dekalb EMS again and
they said, “Don’t worry, we’ve got it
handled.”
At 12:40, three quarters of an hour
after the accident, a private ambulance
firm arrived on the scene. A couple
minutes later, the Atlanta Police showed
up. Police officials estimate the accident
happened at 12:15 and they claim they
weren’t notified until 12:25. We know
the accident happened at 11:55. Even
though APD may not have been notified
until 12:25, it still took 20 minutes
before the first squad car arrived at the
scene.
Neither Dekalb EMS nor Grady ever
showed up. Robert Shook lay in his
twisted F'irebird clinging to a fragment
of life for 40 minutes before he died.
Had police, fire and ambulance
responded quickly, Robert still might
not have lived but at least, he would
have had a chance.
The question we are asking, “Why
the foul-up?” It turns out that the area
where the accident happened is a shared
zone, shared by Grady and Dekalb.
Both ambulance services probably
thought the other would respond. In the
end, neither did.
When dealing with matters of life and
death, mistakes can and should not be
tolerated. We are investigating and by
the time you read this, we should have
some answers. I will let you know next
week.

Outreach Takes To Airwaves
“Come home to church
this Christmas,” invites the
announcer as a vocal group
echoes the words from
Hosea. “Come back to me
with all your heart.”
This is one of five radio
announcements which
were distributed this week
to the 112 radio stations
within the Archdiocese of
Atlanta as part of the
Archdiocesan Year of
Outreach.
The spot announce
ments, produced by the
Archdiocesan Committee
on Evangelization, are
aimed at the inactive

of north Georgia’s
population. It is estimated
that as many as a
half-million people will
hear the messages. The
impact will be extended
by newspaper ads which
will appar the weekend
before Christmas.
The spots were created
for the Committee by
Larry Melear, an Atlanta
audio-visual producer, and
Jeff Kinder of RKM
Sound Studios. The
original music for the
announcements was
recorded by “Promise,” a
professional folk group

MOTES
ROCKFORD, Ill. (NC)
- Jesus was a radical when
it came to women, Father
Theodore Dobson told
about 200 charismatics
attending a day of renewal
in the Rockford Diocese.
Father Dobson, who
wrote “Inner Healing,
God’s Great Assurance,”
said the Jewish law at the
time of Jesus discouraged
any formal contact with
women other than one’s
relatives. A separate place
was set aside in the temple
for women and they “were
made to feel unclean and
unworthy to participate in

the religious life of the
community.
“But Jesus talked with
women. He touched them,
and he allowed them to
touch him,” the priest
said, recalling the Gospel
of the hemorrhaging
woman who was cured by
touching Christ’s garment.
He added that Christ
taught women and that his
parables were directed to
both men and women. The
priest cited the
comparison of the
kingdom of heaven to a
mustard seed and to yeast
that causes dough to rise
as just one example.
Father Dobson said the
letters of Paul show that

considered women to be
full partners with men. He
cited the advice Paul gave
to early Christians when
he told husbands and
wives to be “mutually
submissive.”
The priest suggested
that it might be better
translated “mutually
responsive.”
A letter to the
Corinthians which gave
specific advice that women
keep their heads covered
“was the only church Paul
ever wrote to this way,”
he said, because the early
church in that seaport was
composed of “rough”
people and some of the
women converts had been
prostitutes. Paul wrote
some specific advice that
was meant to eliminate
distractions, Father
Dobson said.
