Desde La Cena A La Cruz
mm
POR:
REINALDO PERDOMO
Cuando el Maestro partio
el pan en aquella Cena
junto con una docena
de los hombres que
escogio;
en su rostro se asomo
un angustioso pesar,
al tener que confesar,
el dia ha llegado ya
y entre nosotros esta
uno que me va a entregar.
Y Judas! Fue el escogido
para hacer en ese instante
el hecho, mas repugnante
que la Historia a recogido.
Salio de alii eonvertido
en cobarde y delator;
mirando mas el valor
frio, miserable y pobre
de unas monedas de cobre,
que la vida del Senor.
Como un vulgar
delincuente
atado se lo llevaron
y esa noche, lo azotaron
estando Herodes presente.
Pero, al ver que era
inocente
de todo aquel alegato,
se retira de inmediato
de aquel sobrio Senedrin,
poniendo a Jesus, al fin
en las manos de Pilatos.
Como Pilatos sabia
que Jesus era inocente,
las manos, rapidamente
se lavo, por cobardia;
Pero la turba pedia
la sangre, de un justo mas,
lanzando todo a un
compas
aquel grito aterrador
‘Crucifiquen al Senor’
y suelten a Barrabas.
Pilatos se habia lavado
las manos, por cobardia
y ya la turba sabia
que iba a ser crucificado.
Pedro lo habia negado
como un bochorno
tambien;
pero aun con el sosten
va con las piernas
sangrientas,
cruzando las polvorientas
calles, de Jerusalem
Por alii, logro pasar
un tal, Simon de Cirene
que casi obligado tiene
la cruz, un rato cargar.
Con el cansancio de andar,
tres veces, Jesus cayo;
y una mujer se acerco
para secarle el sudor,
y la cara del Senor
en el panuelo quedo.
Clavado, entre dos
ladrones
aun el mundo le ofendia
y su cuerpo recibia
ofensas y maldiciones.
Los guardias y centuriones
vinagre le habian brindado,
y como estaba clavado
sin una humana esperanza,
con el filo de una lanza
le atraviesan el costado.
Triste, solo, fracasado,
lleno de polvo y de moscas
sobre dos maderas toscas
muere Dios Crucificado.
Hasta luce abandonado
por el Padre Creador;
Cuando el poder del terror
lo hizo en la Cruz morir,
-PARA MAS TARDE,
SALIR
DEL SEPULCRO
VENCEDOR.

The children of Holy
Cross Church in Atlanta
celebrated their identity as
an Easter people last
Tuesday as they were
treated to a Holy Week
catechesis designed to
define an Easter
experience beyond the
realm of foil-wrapped eggs
and marshmallow bunnies.
For Mrs. Diane Zieg,
children’s representative
on the parish liturgical
committee and organizer
of the event, the day
represented an
opportunity for the
children at Holy Cross - a
parish of over eleven
hundred families in
northeast suburbia - to
come to an understanding
of the traditions of the
season.
‘ ‘The purpose behind
the program,” said Mrs.
Zieg, “was to have the
children experience
learning and sharing and
praying in a community,
just as Jesus did.”
^Central to the learning
aspect of the program was
the dispersion of the
children into workable age
groups. After a brief
filmstrip emphasizing the
new life that Easter brings,
youngsters formed
separate clusters and began
their projects.

Delighted first and
second graders and
children from the
kindergarten ranks were
pleased to discover how, in
their various stages of
growth and change, the
egg, the seed and the
butterfly are signs of new
life. Led by Mrs. Betsy
Wilhelm and Mrs. Patti
Miller, the children were
able to draw parallels
between these symbols
and the steps Jesus
underwent in his work of
redemption.
Scripture came alive for
third and fourth graders
under the guidance of Mrs.
Rita Harmeyer and Mrs.
Rose Payne, who
considered New Testament
symbols representative of
Christ. Children were
re-introduced to the
Paschal candle and its
importance to Catholics as
symbolic of Christ, the
light of the world.
Individual candles were
then formed by careful
young hands so that each
child might have his own
paschal candle for use at
home.
Fifth and sixth graders,
together with Mrs. Rose
Erbs and Mrs. Zieg, traced
the Old Testament
heritage of Christ and the
rich traditions that Jewish
people have enjoyed
throughout their history.
This included an
examination of the
Passover meal and its
significance to our Holy
Thursday commemoration
of the Last Supper Jesus
shared with his friends. A
simplified seder meal was
prepared and eaten to
heighten the children’s
understanding of this
Passover custom.
Highlighting the
communal aspect of this
pre-Easter “happening,”
all gathered at midday to
share a meal on the parish
grounds. Following this
and closing the afternoon
activities was a short
prayer service led by
Father Frank Ralph, O.P.
during which those present
were encouraged to reflect
upon the life, death, and
resurrection of Jesus.
For those who may be
hesitant to share some of
our seasonal traditions
with the young, fearful
lest they might not
understand such heady
concepts, the Holy Cross
model might well serve to
foster a renewed
confidence that such
teaching is indeed fruitful.
From Mrs. Zieg,
obviously enjoying the
excitement of working
with interested and
receptive young hearts, we
receive warm encourag
ement: “The children are
not too young to
understand and appreciate
the significance of Holy
Week. They are the future.
If we don’t meet their
spiritual needs ... we are
the ones who will be
lacking.”

Hispanics Find
Home At IHM
In the last few years
there has been a notable
increase in the number of
S panish-speaking
parishioners at Immucalate
Heart of Mary on Briarcliff
Rd. Driven by
circumstances, whether of
political oppression or
economic necessity, to
leave their homeland they
have found a new home in
Atlanta. The older
parishioners of IHM have
welcomed them with open
arms. “The Hispanics
make a vital contribution
to our parish” says the
pastor, Msgr. R. D.
Kiernan, “sharing in the
various organizations of
the parish and taking their
place on the Parish
Council.” He is working
towards the day when
they will be fully
integrated into the
community.
In the meantime he has
two Sisters from Latin
America working in the
parish to assist Fr. Jorge
Cristancho from Colombia
to assure a pastoral care
and ministry for our
Hispanic fellow-Catholics.
“The first years are the
hardest for immigrants”
says Msgr., “that is why I
had no hesitation in
making available for them
a Sunday morning Mass in
Spanish at a convenient
time.’’ Religious
instruction classes in
Spanish are also given on
Sunday mornings and
numerous adult education
classes during the week.
A new step is being
taken this Easter when the
Holy Week ceremonies will
be bi-lingual with Spanish
and English choirs
alternating in the chants of
the Liturgy. Msgr. O’Neill,
a noted spokesman on
Catholic education will be
here to share in the Holy
Week ceremonies. “Having
the Mass in their own
language is a great comfort
to those who are grappling
with the difficulties of
adjusting to a new life in a
strange land,” says Msgr.
Kiernan, “and our
American Catholics
benefit from the contact
with the time-honored
customs and traditions of
the deep-rooted
Catholicism of the Latin
American peoples.”
Fr. Cristancho and the
two Sisters are doing a
tremendous work in
organizing religious classes
and liturgies and Fr. Joe
Peacock who looks after
the “Divorced and
Previously Married
Association” in the parish
is particularly pleased to
see some of the Hispanic
people taking part in the
group. “In this year of
Outreach” he says, “we
are happy to be able to be
of service to those who
are, perhaps, most in need
of spiritual support and-
comfort.”
It is, indeed, a fitting
way to translate the
Outreach concept into a
positive, rewarding action-
With the interest and
enthusiasm of the pastor
and the parish staff much
has already been
accomplished. Reaping the
fruits of goodwill and
co-operation a thriving
parish community of Faith
is taking shape at IHM
where all can share witlji
dignity in the universality
of the Mystical Body of
Christ our Savior joining
their voices in a glorious
Easter “Alleluia.”
PLANNING THE BI LINGUAL LITURGY for
Holy Thursday are (1 to r) Spanish Choir Director
Mr. Jose Camacho; Rev. George Christancio; Rev.
Jerry Gill MSLS; and English Choir Director Mr.
Gus Ghiridini. (Standing) Mrs. Clemencia
Camacho, Organist for the Spanish Choir; Rev.
Msgr. R. Donald Kiernan, Pastor of IHM; and Mrs.
Margie Watson; Organist for the English Choir.
