These are the familiar scenes of Holy Week. In
St. Jude’s Parish Father Richard Lopez extends
the Cross to be worshiped on Good Friday. In St.
Peter’s Pope John Paul blesses pilgrims to the
Vatican on Holy Saturday and in the Cathedral of
Christ the King, Archbishop Thomas A.
Donnellan receives the Oil to be consecrated as
Oil of the Sick from Permanent Deacon Thomas
Zaworski on Holy Thursday.
The drama of Holy Week is caught in the
celebration of these joyful, global ceremonies.

John Paul In The Box
“...the stone had been taken away...
BY THEA JARVIS
The following are
excerpts from the Vatican
Press Office translation of
Pope John Paul’s “Urbi et
Orbi” (to the city and the
world) talk on Easter:
“And she saw that the
stone had been taken away
from the tomb.” (Jn.
20:1)
They (the disciples of
Jesus) saw and they
realized that men had not
been able to conquer Jesus
with the tombstone,
sealing it with the seal of
death . . .
Many times the builders
of the world, for whom
Christ was willing to die,
have sought to put a final
stone before his tomb.
But the stone is always
removed from his tomb;
the stone, the witness to
his death, has become the
witness to the
resurrection.
Let this world, which
unfortunately today in
various ways seems to
desire the “death of God,”
listen to the message of
the resurrection . . .
All of you who
proclaim the “death of
God,” who seek to drive
God out of the human
world, stop and think that
the “death of God” fatally
carries within itself” the
death of man” too.
Christ rose again so that
man could find the true
meaning of existence, so
that man could live his
own life fully, so that
man, who comes from
God, could live in God.
Christ has risen. He is
the cornerstone. Already
at that time they tried to
reject him and defeat him
with the sealed and
guarded tombstone. But
that stone was rolled
away. Christ is risen.
Do not reject Christ,
you who are the builders
of the world . . .
Do not refuse Christ:
he is the cornerstone.
Let no man or woman
refuse him, for each one is
responsible for his or her
destiny and is the builder
or destroyer of his or her
own existence . . .
In virtue of this
cornerstone which unites,
let us build our common
hope with our brothers in
Christ of East and West,
with whom we are not yet
in full communion and
perfect unity . . .
Let those who share
with us the resurrection
message and Easter joy
accept this invitation (to
build the world upon
Christ), and also those
who, alas, do not yet share
it. Christ, “our Passover,”
does not cease to be a
pilgrim with us along the
road of history, and each
one can meet him, for he
does not cease to be the
brother of men and
women in every age and at
every moment.

Pope John Paul spent
most of Holy Saturday
resting before beginning
the Easter vigil in St.
Peter’s at 10 p.m.
During the vigil, he
baptized 12 men and 12
women from 11 countries.
The group included
26-year-old Helvi Viita, a
student at Hunter College
in New York, who took
the name Marja.
The vigil began with a
liturgy of light in which
St. Peter’s was
transformed from darkness
into a blaze of candles and
lights. At midnight, after a
crowd of about 20,000
renewed baptismal vows,
Pope John Paul celebrated
the Easter Mass.
But it was the second
Easter Sunday Mass,
beginning at 10:30 a.m. in
St. Peter’s Square, that
attracted a crowd
estimated at between
300,000 and 350,000, one
of the largest groups ever
in the square for a
liturgical event.
At the conclusion of
the services, broadcast to
about a billion people in
17 nations, the pope went
to the loggia of St. Peter’s
for his semi-annual “urbi
et orbi” talk.
He sent wishes for “a
happy, blessed and
peaceful Easter” to ail
English-speaking listeners.
The 31 other languages he
used included Chinese,
Hebrew, Japanese and
Swahili.
EL SALVADOR
Military Aid Debated
BY JIM LACKEY
WASHINGTON (NC) -
The assassination of
Archbishop Oscar Romero
of San Salvador, El
Salvador, seems certain to
propel to the forefront the
debate over the Carter
administration’s proposal
to supply military aid to
the government of that
Central American nation.
The debate has been
going strong for several
months. But it did not
receive widespread public
attention until the
morning after Archbishop
Romero’s murder when,
ironically, the House
foreign operations
subcommittee held a
previously scheduled
hearing on the aid
proposal.
There are sharp
differences of opinion on
the proposal. The State
Department contends the
$5.7 million aid package is
needed to help the
Salvadorean government
fend off attacks from both
the right and left.
But Archbishop
Romero championed
another viewpoint: that
the country’s five
-month-old cen trist
government itself had
become a tool of unjust
repression against a people
struggling for human
rights.
Even before his death,
Archbishop Romero’s
opposition to the military
aid was being echoed in
the United States by
Archbishop John R. Quinn
of San Francisco,
president of the National
Conference of Catholic
Bishops, and Bishop
Thomas Kelly, NCCB
general secretary.
And after his
assassination, several
members of Congress
questioned the propriety
of military aid to a
country still torn by
violence.
El Salvador, long
controlled by a right-wing
military dictatorship was
torn for decades by civil
strife. Then last Oct. 15, a
civilian-military junta
staged a coup in what was
described as a peaceful and
democratic revolution
dominated by neither right
nor left.
The U.S. State
Department has placed
much hope in the future
of that new government,
seeing it possibly as the
only viable alternative in a
country where extremists
on both sides continue to
struggle for power. The
country’s recent attempts
at agrarian and financial
reforms have been praised
by the United States as
excellent steps toward
human rights for the
country’s citizenry.
But the State
Department also has
admitted its concern about
the extremists who want
to topple the civilian-mil
itary junta. Thus, the
proposed military aid
package for the country
includes trucks,
ambulances, tear gas,
protective masks and other
equipment aimed at

“We are as concerned as
you that any assistance we
provide not be used in a
repressive manner,”
Secretary of State Cyrus
Vance told Archbishop
Romero in a March 11
letter. “Any equipment
and training which we
might provide would be
designed to enhance the
professionalism of the
armed forces so that they
can fulfill their essential
role of maintaining order
with a minimum of lethal
force.”
Archbishop Romero
said before his death,
though, that the current
government was not
demonstrating a capacity
to resolve national
problems by peaceful
means. Instead, political
power had fallen “in the
hands of the unscrupulous
military” whose aim was
to repress the people in
ways worse than those of
the previous rulers, and to
promote the interests of
the oligarchy.
And so people like
Archbishop Quinn and
Bishop Kelly are almost
pleading with Congress
and with the Carter
administration not to send
the military aid lest it be
used to stifle rights further
in El Salvador.
‘‘The instances of
recent and brutal
repression are facts and
should in no way be
rewarded by any military
assistance from this
country,” Thomas E.
Quigley, the bishops’
conference’s advisor on
Latin America and the
Caribbean, told the Senate
Foreign Relations
Committee last December.
