TV: A Dangerous Mixture
NEW ORLEANS (NC)
- Television’s mixture of
reality and unreality is
dangerous, and it’s not
only children who are
susceptible to confusing
the two, Ellen M. Clair
said at the recent National
Catholic Educational
Association convention in
New Orleans.
“The easy answers of
television don’t work out
in real life and that leads
to confusion and
disappointment,” Ms. Clair
said.
‘‘We become
mesmerized when we
watch television,” she said.
“If a program looks lousy,
we don’t turn it off. We sit
there watching hoping
something good will
happen. It doesn’t and the
next program begins and
the same thing happens.
We’re too hooked and
passive even to get up and
change stations.”
Children, Ms. Clair told
the teachers at the
meeting, spend an average
of three hours a day in “an
unsupervised classroom -
watching television.
Children are learning
surprising and frightening
things from television.
They are picking up
stereotypes of women and
minorities.”
Ms. Clair said that until
children are in the second
or third grade, they cannot
distinguish between
commercials and
programming, and “they
believe that commercials
don’t lie.”
Father James Hawker,
director of religious
education programs for
schools in the Archdiocese
of Boston, said that the
people in television are
aware of the tremendous
influence that television
has, especially on children.
Father Hawker agreed
with Ms. Clair that
c h i ldren watch an
enormous amount of
television a week. He
noted that the Nielsen
reports have shown that
for children 2 to 5, who
watch 31.23 hours of
television a week, 21
percent of their viewing is
between 7 and 11 p.m.
Thirty-one percent of the
viewing of children 6 to 11
is between 7 and 11 p.m.
Father Hawker cited a
television column by
William Henry III in the
Boston Globe, “W’hat
Children Learn from TV.”
‘‘They watch the
bawdiness of ‘Saturday
Night Life,’ the sexual
dreaming of ‘Charlie’s
Angels’ and ‘Fantasy
Island,’ and ‘Eight Is
Enough,’ about a family
with several children living
in what used to be called
sin,” Henry wrote.
“They’re only 9 or
10-years-old . . . They
know right from wrong,
proper from improper, and
they prefer wrong and
improper,” he wrote.
“Given the choice of trash
or education, they will
chose trash.”
Of course, a careful
parent can use television in
a positive way, Ms. Clair
said. But television
producers and network
officials are always telling
parents that they are
totally responsible for
what their children watch.
“That’s like a city
delivering impure water to
your house and telling you
it’s your responsibility to
purify it,” she said.
Children accept
television as an authority,
Ms. Clair said. “It’s
replaced home, church and
school. It gives children
plenty of facts but no
wisdom.”
The wisdom has to
come from parents and
educators, Ms. Clair and
Father Hawker agreed.
Freedom Means Going To Mass—*
(Continued from page 1)
“If you do these things
openly, you are marked
and discriminated against.
I have many friends who
also keep their faith very
private,” she said.
“The great majority of
the Cubans are religious
people,” said Father Pol.
“You walk into any home
and you are likely to find
somewhere a crucifix, an
image of Mary or the
Sacred Heart. They have a
religious motivation in
their lives and no one is
going to take it away.”
Costa Rican Catholic
groups made copies of the
New Testament available
to the Cubans.
Although the Cuban
constitution establishes
freedom of religion “what
really happens is that if
you show religious beliefs,
you are marked for
exclusion from the ruling
inner groups -- the
Communist Party, the
university and the
Communist Youth,” said
Antonio Montero, 28, who
was a medical aide in
Havana.
The Jehovah’s
Witnesses have been
especially discriminated
against because of their
religious objections to
military service and
obedience to governmental
authority, he said.
Some leaders, such as
Fidel Castro, had religious
beliefs at one time and
“Fidel during a tour of
Africa and earlier during a
Christian meeting in
Jamaica acknowledged the
value of Christianity,” said
Montero.
“Yet when it comes to
people, religion is
discouraged. The leaders at
the Jamaica meeting
shipped several hundred
Bibles to Cuba. They never
reached the churches,” he
added.
“Even Christmas and its
midnight Mass was
suppressed on the grounds
that too many holidays
were detrimental to the
national economy,”
Montero commented.
“Youths show no religious
interest, but I say it is
because they fear the
consequences of the
future.”
Montero said he was
baptized when he was 18
“and at a place far from
home where nobody knew
J?
me.
Because no religious
literature was generally
available, Montero went to
old libraries where “one
can find some works on
spirituality.”
Another critic of the
religious situation is Juan
Molina, a 54-year-old
building contractor.
‘‘At first Fidel
respected the churches,
save those caught in
‘counter-revolutionary
activity,’ and of course
they were banned,” he
said.
“But for the people
there is repression and
fear. When you come to
work, the party bosses ask
you what religion you are.
If you say ‘Catholic,’ they
check your name on the
list with a red pencil, and
that lasts forever. Sure, the
churches are open, but
government spies take
pictures of churchgoers,”
said Molina.
Molina described the
experience of his sister
when she attended a
Sunday Mass.
“Where are you going?”
she was asked.
“To pray to the Lord. I
believe in Him,” she
answered.
“But this Lord does not
exist.”
“Not for you. But for
me the Lord lives.”
“Well, we are taking
your picture and it will
run in the party paper.
Your husband and son will
pay for your transgression
of government policy.”
Molina added: “This is
why I and so many others
risked so much to gain
freedom.”

Sunday with a Mass attended by parishioners,
friends, and relatives who joined in wishing her

was followed by a reception in the Family Center.
The Runner’s Prayer
You are running with me, Father, You are listening
whilee I pray.
Thank you for these precious moments, Thank you
for this glorious day.
While my body stretches forward and I marvel at
the breeze
I note that repetition has changed this task to ease.
So it was with Christian living when I began to walk.
I noticed I was witnessing for you, Lord, in my talk.
My outer nature fell away, The inner one did grow.
I started saying “yes” to you where I used to answer
“no.”
Each day I walked your lighted path my heart raced
on for miles.
I found that all that doubt and pain soon changed
to joy and smiles.
I lifted up my soul to you, how easy it was done.
Now there’s no fear - just VICTORY, I’m running
with your Son.
