Makers Criticized
companies pledged
support, called for the
promotion of breast
feeding over infant
formulas in Third World
countries.
But the consumer
group said the companies,
including Nestle, have
continued with “a
systematic and continuing
pattern of aggressive
promotion” of substitutes

In the report, the group
claimed that baby food

establishment of a
proposed international

Priest-Columnist Silenced
OAKLAND, Calif. (NC)
- Jesuit Father Cornelius
M. Buckley, a newspaper
columnist recently
silenced by his provincial,
said he is not “angry or
bitter” about his superior’s
actions against him.
“But,” added the priest
in an interview with The
Catholic Voice, newspaper
of the Oakland Diocese,
“the silencing puts an end
to dialogue - an activity
greatly needed in the
church today.”
Father Buckley, a
history professor at the
University of San
Francisco, for several years
has been writing a
biweekly column for The
Monitor, San Francisco
arch diocesan newspaper.
The Los Angeles-based
National Catholic Register
also began to run his
column last fall.
But recently, Jesuit
Father Terrance Mahan,
head of the Jesuits’
California province, told
Father Buckley he was no
longer permitted to write
on matters other than
history.
In a statement E'ather
Mahan said the silencing
was the result of Father
Buckley’s “intemperate
attacks on persons, groups
and institutions within and
outside the Society of
Jesus during the past
months.”
PENTECOST MASS
“Often,” the Jesuit
provincial continued,
“these accusations have
been inaccurate and
misleading and, in my
judgment, un-Christian
and confusing to many of
the faithful.”
The statement noted
that Father Buckley had
once been warned that if
he continued his attacks in
his column he would be
asked to cease writing. The
silencing was not due to
the columnist’s theology,
the statement added.
Father Mahan also
indicated the silencing
may be temporary.
In defense of his
column, Father Buckley
said he never made wild
and unfounded
accusations. “I wrote only
against those things that
had appeared in print.”
Over the last two years
the columnist has
criticized several Jesuits
and the institutions they
work in, particularly the
Jesuit School of Theology
at Berkeley, Calif. He
questioned the school’s
loyalty to the pope when
it issued a public
statement dissenting from
the church’s teachings in
the encyclical “Humanae
Vitae,” condemning
artificial means of birth
control.
He also objected to a
statement composed by
Charismatics Celebrate
A charismatic Pentecost
Mass will be celebrated on
the Vigil of Pentecost,
May 24, at Holy Family
Church.
At the first Pentecost,
when the power of the
Holy Spirit poured over
the men and women
gathered in one room, a
strong wind was felt by all
and tongues of fire
appeared over each head.
Then the Lord’s promise
was fulfilled: “ . . . you
will receive power when
the Holy Spirit comes on
you, and then you will be
my witnesses not only in
Jerusalem, but throughout
Judaea and Samaria and
indeed to the ends of the
earth.” (Acts 1:8)
The Power of the Holy
Spirit was received by that
group of men and women,
and at that moment their
fear of persecution was
turned into courage to
proclaim with happiness
and authority that Jesus is
Lord.
The Pentecost liturgy is
being sponsored by the
Prayer Groups of the
Archdiocese, through the
area steering committee.
Everyone is invited to
come and share in the
sacrifice of the Mass on
Saturday at 8:00 p.m.
Holy Family Church is
located at 100 Pinehurst
Lane, Marietta, phone
973-0038. Priests of the
Archdiocese will
concelebrate the Mass,
with Father Henry Gracz
being the principal
celebrant. Father Gracz is
pastor of Ss. Peter and
Paul Church. There will be
special music for the
liturgy and sharing and
conversation afterwards.

several faculty members at
the Jesuit school
criticizing Pope Paul Vi’s
declaration against
women’s ordination.
And in what turned out
to be his last column,
Father Buckley suggested
that the Jesuit school use
the occasion of a Berkeley
appearance by Swiss
theologian, Father Hans
Kung, to demonstrate its
allegiance to the pope and
clear up whatever doubts
were created in the past
about the school’s loyalty
to Rome. F’ather Kung has
been censured by the
Vatican and told he may
no longer teach as a
Catholic theologian.
The silencing and the
controversy surrounding it
is only “the tip of the
iceberg,” Father Buckley
observed.
‘‘There is growing
dissension between
confreres in the western
province of the Jesuit
order, and only an outside
agent such as the pope or
the superior general will
resolve the conflict,” he
said.
Noting that the
provincial had the right to
criticize him without
giving a reason, Father
Buckley said that
nonetheless the provincial
was “kind enough to tell
me the motive for his
action.”
But while noting his
lack of anger over the
silencing, he also
acknowledged that the
action may be an
indication of intolerance
of opinion.
“It kind of looks like
that right now. The church
today needs dialogue,” he
said. “It seems like I have
a different opinion than
some of those in seminary
training. I feel I should be
heard.”
He added, “It is ironic
that in the old days Jesuits
were checked for speaking
out against the pope.
Today the tables have
turned apparently.”

Briefs....
Catholic Population Rises
NEW YORK (NC) - The total Catholic
population of the United States is 49,812,178,
according to the 1980 Official Catholic Directory,
released May 22.
The figure is a slight increase from the 1979
figure of 49,602,035.
Food Stamps Refunded
WASHINGTON (NC) - Congress has given
final approval to an emergency appropriation for
food stamps, a measure strongly favored by
church groups, including the U.S. Catholic
Conference.
The legislation, approved by both houses May
15, would allow the government to spend an
additional $2.5 billion for food stamps during the
current fiscal year, which expires Sept. 30.
Without the extra money, federal food stamp
funds had been expected to run out sometime in
June.
Lutheran-Catholic Dialouge
NEW YORK (NC) -- The main Lutheran
statement of doctrine, the Augsburg Confession,
provides a basis for the reconciliation of
Lutherans and Catholics, a Lutheran and a
Catholic theologian agreed.
Jesuit Father Avery Dulles, professor of
systematic theology at the Catholic University of
America, said the confession, though at odds with
Catholic theology on several points, makes the
case that “the Lutheran movement can be
integrated into the Catholic understanding of the
faith.”
