St. Pat’s Breaks Ground
Joe N. Guy Inc., of
Atlanta, which won the
contract for building a
new church community
complex for St. Patrick’s
Catholic Church, Norcross,
begins work immediately
on a 10-acre site on Beaver
Ruin Road. Guy’s low bid
was for $1,073,136.
Archbishop Thomas A.
Donnellan concelebrated
the first Mass on the
grounds at ground-break
ing ceremonies Aug. 10.
Other celebrants of the
Mass were St. Patrick’s
pastor, Father Joseph
Meehan, associate and
former associate pastors,
Father Christopher
Yarnold and Father
Kenneth Bayer, all
members of the
Missionaries of St. Francis
De Sales, plus vice
chancellor of the Atlanta
Archdiocese, Father James
Miceli.
Among the dignitaries
who took a turn at digging
a ceremonial clod of earth,
in addition to the clergy,
were Norcross Mayor
Lillian Webb, Gwinnett
County Manager Wayne
Shackelford, Ed Straw,
president of Rockborough
North Subdivision, which
abuts the church land,
Gene Slade, church
building committee
chairman, representatives
from the Guy company
and the church architects,
Miller, Waltz and Diedrich.
The church will seat
500 and the parish center
will have an all-purpose
hall, 16 meeting rooms,
complete kitchen, a daily
chapel and a parking lot
that utilizes present trees.
The site was cleared for
groundbreaking by
volunteers directed by Bob
Geipel, who also made a
rugged cross from a pine
tree on the lot. About 300
attended the ceremonies.
Many brought a shovel,
trowel or even a
tablespoon to participate
in the act of breaking
ground. Father Meehan
encouraged each of the
750 parish families to cut
into their home lots,
leaving a hole unplanted
until the church is
completed next July, then
planting a living tree as a
symbol of a growing
community blessed by
God.

Catholics Counsel On The Draft
NC NEWS
Catholic dioceses in the United
States have implemented a variety of
programs to help 19 and 20 year-old
draft registrants understand what the
draft means for them.
The programs include establishment
of draft counseling centers or referral
services, training programs for priests
and nuns who wish to counsel, and draft
education programs aimed at high
school-age Catholics.
The Baltimore archdiocesan peace
and justice commission announced that
it intended to set up draft counseling
centers throughout the archdiocese.
The commission also planned to
develop a “packet of information”
containing church teachings on war and
peace, brochures explaining registration
and conscription procedures and data
concerning deferments and
conscientious objector status.
“We are acutely aware that the issue
of registration and the draft is both a
very complex and a very sensitive one,”
wrote Bishop P. Francis Murphy,
auxiliary of Baltimore and chairman of
the commission, in a letter explaining
the archdiocesan program.
In the Archdiocese of St. Paul and
Minneapolis, draft counseling
responsibilities have been turned over to
Catholic Charities.
Msgr. J. Jerome Boxleitner, director
of Catholic Charities, said the
organization’s counseling would not
attempt to persuade men to take a
particular action.
“Our counseling is objective,” he
said. “We’re not going to tell them to
file C.O. (conscientious objector) or not
to file C.O.
“But if a young man wants to file
C.O., we’ll tell him what steps to
follow.”
The Milwaukee archdiocese joined
five other religious denominations in an
ecumenical effort to operate a draft
counseling center on a three-month trial
basis. Other supporting denominations
are Methodist, American Lutheran
Church, Lutheran Church of America,
Presbyterian and United Church of
Christ.

Benedictines Boycott
» . 1- V
In their annual chapter meetings in
August, 1980, the Benedictine Sisters of
Cullman, Ala. voted overwhelmingly to
endorse the boycott of Nestle Corp. and
the boycott of J. P. Stevens, Inc. Their
statement said:
“In the boycott of Nestle Corp. a
Swiss-based corporation, the Benedictine
Sisters join nutritionists, educators, church
representatives, and concerned citizens
who have for more than four years resorted
to boycott of all Nestle products because
of Nestle’s continued promotion of infant
formula in the Third World. As many as 10
million infants annually are victims of
diseases related to bottle feeding.
“In October, 1979, WHO/UNICEF
sponsored a meeting in Geneva,
Switzerland for the purpose of a careful
analysis of the problem of infant formula
promotion by corporations in Third World
countries; principles were set forth for the
promotion of infant formula in developing
countries and a mandate laid down for the
industry to develop a more specific code of
conduct based on the principles outlined at
the meeting.
“Nestle, although claiming complete
support of the W 7 HO/UNICEF
recommendations of October 9-12, 1979
has in fact found verbal loopholes to
justify their policies, and Nestle has not
followed through on their own
commitment to stop consumer advertising
in Third World countries.
“How does the sale of infant formula in
Third World countries contribute to infant
malnutrition and mortality? More mothers,
because of intense advertising that
promotes bottle feeding as best for babies,
never start breastfeeding, and can scarcely
afford adequate amounts of infant formula
while living well below their country’s
poverty line.
“The Benedictine Sisters endorsement
of the J. P. Stevens boycott joins recent
endorsements by six Southern Roman
Catholic Bishops and the United Methodist
Church’s Delegate Conference in April of
this year. J. P. Stevens, the nation’s second
largest textile manufacturer, has for 17
years refused to recognize the right of the
Amalgamated Clothing and Textile
Workers Union to represent the company’s
workers.”

WASHINGTON (NC) -
With little debate on
abortion, the House
approved an $84 billion
appropriations bill which
includes the now-tradition-
al Hyde amendment
limiting federal funding of
abortion to cases in which
the life of the mother is
endangered.
Approval of the bill
Aug. 28 marked the first
time that either body of
Congress has voted on the
abortion funding question
since the Supreme Court
ruled in June that abortion
funding limitations were
constitutional.
The Hyde amendment,
named after its original
sponsor, Rep. Henry Hyde
(R-Ill.), was attached to
the bill in committee.
Unlike previous years,
there was no effort on the
House floor to amend the
bill to make other
abortion funding
exceptions.
The bill, which makes
the annual federal
appropriation for the
Departments of Labor,
Education and Health and
Human Services, now goes
to the Senate, which in
past years has voted to
allow abortion funding in
other cases, such as rape,
incest or when two
doctors determine that
there would be severe
physical health damage to
the mother if the fetus
were carried to term.
The measure then is
likely to end up in a
House-Senate conference
committee to iron out
differences in the two
versions of the bill. Last
year, after months of
back-and-forth debate, the
two bodies finally agreed
to limit abortion funding
for the 1980 fiscal year to
life-of-the-mother cases
and cases of promptly
reported rape or incest.
The new fiscal year
begins Oct. 1.
The lack of a House
debate on the issue came
as a surprise to at least one
congressman, Rep. John
M. Murphy (D-N.Y.), who
said he had expected
another floor fight.
‘ ‘ However, I am
delighted to find out that
after the countless votes
and hours of debate we
have undertaken since
1976 (the year of the first
Hyde amendment), it has
been finally brought home
to those members of this
body that seek to open up
federal abortion funding
that they cannot win,”
stated Murphy.
