BRIDGEPORT, CONN.
Klan Message “Unchristian”
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (NC) -- Two days
before a weekend of rallies marking the
re-emergence of the Ku Klux Klan in
Connecticut, the priests’ council of the
Bridgeport Diocese said the Klan’s
“message of division and racial or religious
inferiority” is “contrary to our Christian
beliefs.”
The Klan’s message also “attacks the
very roots of our American heritage that
recognizes the equality, dignity and
inalienable rights of all citizens,” the
priests’ council said in'a statement issued
Sept. 11.
During the Klan rallies and
cross-burnings Sept. 13 and 14 in Scotland,
Conn., the first in the state in 70 years, at
least eight people were injured and 12
people were arrested, including a Louisiana
Klan leader who was charged with carrying
a dangerous weapon in a motor vehicle.
The priests’ council said the renewed
Klan activity in Connecticut “is a concern
to all people of good will.”
“God’s word proclaims the oneness of
the human family: all men and women are
created in God’s image, ‘not just some
races and racial types, but all bear the
imprint of the creator and are enlivened by
the breath of His one spirit,”’ the council
said, quoting a 1979 pastoral letter of the
U.S. bishops on racism.
The priests pledged to preach against
the sin of racism, urged prayers for “the
renewed conversion that God seeks from
each of us to live in justice and love with
all our brothers and sisters,” and called on
Catholics in the diocese to join with “other
religious groups and all concerned citizens
to build up the spirit of unity, harmony,
understanding and respect.”
Discrimination, “whether because of
race, religion, economic status, or national
origin is a serious injustice which weakens
our social fabric and deprives our country
of the unique contributions of many of its
citizens,” the priests said.
