SPOKANE, Wash. (NC) - Retired
Bishop Bernard Topel of Spokane, who
lives in a little house in a poor section of
town and whose austere diet often consists
of fish-head soup or vegetable stew, didn’t
want a fancy part Sept. 21.
“These dates don’t mean that much to
me,” he said of the day which marked his
silver anniversary as a bishop.
The Bozeman, Mont, native, who was
ordained a priest in 1927 and named
bishop in 1955, was congratulated by Pope
John Paul II on his 25th anniversary. The
bishop had asked that no public
celebration be scheduled, but a Mass in his
honor will be concelebrated Oct. 3.
Bishop Topel captured the eyes of
affluent America by embracing what he
called “Sister Poverty.” He sold the
bishop’s mansion in 1969 and bought a
$4,000 home in a poor neighborhood. The
bishop resigned in April, 1978.
CBS newsman Charles Kuralt, a Time
magazine reporter and countless other
secular and religious newsmen all filed
stories on the pauper-bishop.
The stories told of the bishop who lived
on vegetables grown in his garden and on
staple donations from friends; who wore a
thick coat and several pairs of trousers ir
his home during winter so that he could
save money on heating oil and donate it to
the poor; who never bought a new suit of
clothes or pair of shoes; who drove a 1965
car rather than spend money on a newer
model.
The story is also told of how he
thwarted a burglar when the thief found
only one dollar (a donation to buy seeds
for his garden) after he had broken into the
bishop’s home.
“A lot of people say that I have
shortened my life span by living so
austerely,” the 77-year-old retired bishop
said in an interview with the Inland
Register, the newspaper of the Spokane
Diocese.
“If I did, I have no regrets.
“When I first began thinking about this
kind of lifestyle, I had to be open and
honest with myself. I had to ask myself: ‘Is
this truly helpful or not? If not, then junk
it. If it is, then for God’s sake do it!’
“I felt it benefitted my spiritual life, so
I did it. Our Lord is the most important
thing in life. He is worth any price.”
In 1973 Bishop Topel was willing to go
to jail to pay that price.
He risked the jail sentence by publicly
challenging the Supreme Court’s decision
legalizing abortions. Strongly condemning
the court decision, Bishop Topel said that
he would go to jail rather than allow
abortions to be performed in diocesan
hospitals, and that he would close the
hospitals if the court ordered abortions on
their premises.
“I am firmly resolved to obey God
rather than men . . . cost what it may,” the
former diocesan leader said at a press
conference. “I was willing to be sent to jail
and I meant it,” he said, recalling the
event.
His act of civil disobedience stems from
“iron-clad principles,” he explained.
When asked the greatest stumbling
block that prevents Christians from being
examples to others, Bishop Topel replied,
“self-indulgence.
“Every place you go, you will see
people acting on their personal desires
rather than following our risen Lord,” he
said.
“Without a doubt, Bishop Topel’s life,
speaks a message the world is obviously
starving to hear,” an Inland Register
editorial said on his anniversary. The
editorial was written by Father Michael
Savelesky, editor. “His witness has struck a
resonant chord in the hearts of rich and
poor alike who are looking for a place to
live in a eonsumeristic and materialistic
world.”

Catholic Communications
The Department of Communications hosted a seminar
for all our parishes on Thursday Sept. 25. The Georgia
Bulletin staff were secretly searching for hidden-away
photographers and reporters in our parishes. And they
report they may indeed have found some.
Mr. A. R. Van Cantfort, program director of WSB
Television and chairman of the Board of Catholic
Communications, opened the proceedings with an outline
of “Communications to Come.” “The real explosion is
still to come,” said Mr. Van Cantfort “and we and our
Church must be ready to meet it.”
Monsignor Burtenshaw, Gretchen Keiser and Thea
Jarvis of the Communications Staff conducted the
seminar for the parish representatives .
TELEVISION
The Television Mass, seen on WSB Channel 2 in Atlanta
on the first and third Sundays of each month at 10:30
a.m., keeps rolling along. Many more viewers are added
each month. Shut-ins throughout the Archdiocese may
receive a monthly Missalette and a newsletter free of
charge by contacting us. Call 881-9732. We will do the
rest.
The beautiful choir you will hear on the October
Masses is from Immaculate Heart of Mary parish. Margie
Watson provides the music and Gus Ghirardini
masterminded the entire score. You’ll love them.
RADIO
Religion - Wise is our radio show. You can catch it on
all news radio WGST 92 A.M. It is a weekly look at the
news through the eyes of religion. Hear it on Sunday
mornings at 6:30 and again Sunday evenings at 9:35.
We are now preparing our radio spots for Advent. You
will hear them on radio stations around the Archdiocese
and we will have more information on them soon.
Bible Study Judged
C H ATTANOOGA,
Tenn. (NC) - A federal
judge has upheld one Bible
study course but has
struck down another in
cases involving two
separate Chattanooga area
public school districts.
U.S. District Judge
Frank Wilson upheld the
Bible programs used in
Chattanooga city schools
because “the intent and
purpose of the lessons
appear to be secular.”
But he ordered
Hamilton County
elementary schools to stop
their Bible study program
because the lessons “tend
to promote religious
belief.”
The ruling, issued Sept.
5, was the result of two
lawsuits initiated in 1978
by several students and
their parents asking the
court to halt both Bible
study programs.
In 1979 the judge
found both programs to be
unconstitutional, but gave
each school system the
opportunity to redesign
the programs to meet the
test of constitutionality.
In the latest ruling,
Wilson said the city’s
school Bible programs
neither advanced nor
inhibited religion,
appeared to be
non-devotional, and did
not include impermissible
religious instruction.
But he said the
county’s Bible program
did not “convey the
Bible’s literary, historical
or social themes in a
non-religious or secular
manner.”
Wilson also rejected
arguments that the
programs should be struck
down because their
teachers were trained in
evangelical Christian
colleges.
He ruled that to
exclude persons from
employment because of a
particular religious
background is as
impermissible as requiring
a certain faith or religious
background for
employment.
Sharing And Caring
BY NANCY ARROYO
There is a song entitled “Come Home My People,” in
which God tells that He is still building you and asks you
to lend your hand.
Up in Cumming, Georgia there lie two green buildings
on Pirkle Ferry Road called “The Place.” It is a part of
Catholic Rural Social Services and staffed by four Adrian
Dominician sisters.
It is here that people go to find group identity and
support through socialization, sharing of resources, and
use of talents. Individuals and families with little or no
income are assisted from the emergency resources in times
of crisis and on a long term basis.
“The Place” listens to the needs of the people.
What can we do to show we care and want to share in
.caking dreams come true for the poor? There are many
ways, including saving grocery bags, collecting wood for
fires, and canned goods for the people in need. Also
household items, clothes and accessories are needed. They
are in desperate need of metal cabinets to store food in
for the people who come to them.
Reach out and help, for when a person is able to share
with those less fortunate, he develops a deeper meaning of
caring. If you have any items to donate, call 255-1078.
