La Mision de Evangelizar
POR SISTER
THERESA AHERN
En esta decada hemos
de oir mucho sobre la
evangelizacion. La Iglesia,
que es comunion
verdadera, es igual y
conseeuentemente mision
autentica. Su fraternidad
es universal. Pero no se
hace fraternidad
unicamente al interior de
la eomunidad eclesial. Se
haee eomunidad cuando
ella se identifica con el
pueblo, especialmente los
mas necesitados. La mision
eclesial es esencialmente
e vangelizadora. La
evangelizacion es
TESTIMONIO, ANUNCIO
y EXTENSION DEL
MISTERIO PASCUAL -
MUERTE AL PECADO Y
SUS CONSECUENCIAS.
La Iglesia anuncia la
salvacion por medio de
Jesucristo. Y atraves de
este anuncio llama a todos
los hombres a una
conversion compromet-
iendoles a una eomunidad
que es semilla del Reino.
La mision de la Iglesia - su
ministerio pastoral - tiene
raices misioneras. Hay que
traspasar las fronteras de la
eomunidad eclesial y andar
en tierras extranas.
Cuando todo se queda
dentro de la eomunidad
eclesial, la Iglesia vive en
decadencia; sus momentos
misioneros, en cambio, son
momentos de oro. La
pastoral no cambia al
mundo si la Iglesia no
tiene contacto con el
mundo.
La evangelizacion
incluye PENETRACION
M I S I O N E R A ,
COMUNION, y
EXPRESION CREDORA
DEL MENSAJE. La
penetracion misionera se
puede llamar Encamacion.
La Palabra y la Comunidad
eclesial son engendradas en
el seno del pueblo por
medio de la obra del
Espiritu Santo. La realidad
de ese pueblo, su
naturaleza humana, se
encuentra con la
naturaleza divina de Dios.
Esta se revela y se da. Nace
entonces la Iglesia
repitiendo analogicamente
el hecho de la encarnacion
de Jesus.
La evangelizacion es
COMUNION. Por ella, el
evangelizado hace suyo el
mensaje. Es comunion
vital con la person de
Jesus. El Mensaje Cristino
no es una doctrina sino
una persona: Jesus. Y la
evangelizacion es la
presentacion del mundo a
esta persona.
La evangelizacion
tambien requiere una
expresion creadora del
mensaje en cada epoca,
para cada pueblo, y en
cada cultura. El Espiritu
Snato que penetro el
corazon de cada persona y
la realidad de cada cultura
transforma a los que
reciben el mensaje en la
nueva comunidad de Jesus
y los conduce a ser a su
vez misioneros del mismo
mensaje que han recibido.
El circulo de la
evangelizacion se completa
cuando los envangelizados
salen a ser los evangeliza-
dores. La mision es
consecuencia del amor. La
comunidad cristiana es
MISION, dando
gratuitamente lo que ha
recibido, aun cuando
todavia no lo ha asimiliado-
totalemnte en su propio
vivir. Cuando la
comunidad eclesial pone
sus mejores miembros, sus
posibilidades, y sus medios
disponibles al servicio de la
evangelizacion, crea en si
misma la capacidad y el
deseo de ser mas fiel y
autentica. Entonces el
mundo ve que Cristo vive.

Parishes In Renewal
Corpus Christi
Approximately 300 members of Corpus Christi
parish in Stone Mountain recently shared a
growth-filled week of renewal led by Paulist Father
Timothy Tighe of the National Office for
Evangelization in Washington, D. C. (pictured above).
Father Tighe, choosing as his texts St.Paul’s letters
to the Galatians and 1 Corinthians explained that the
major letters of Paul were the earliest New Testament
Scriptures.
In them, Paul had to deal with misconceptions and
misinterpretations of the Gospel that were causing
dissension and division in the first century Church.
In grappling with those problems, many similar to
ones we face today, Paul also developed a deeper
understanding of the Gospel.
It was this growth in understanding and its
implications for the local churches that brought about
the concept of the universal Church we call Catholic.
After a concelebrated closing Eucharist, those in
attendance felt blessed in several special ways. They
had grown in their knowledge of Scripture and in an
appreciation for its study. They had acquired a deeper
respect for the richness of their Catholic Christian
heritage, and had pondered the mystery of the Cross
and life in the Spirit.
In addition, they had taken in the witness of a
tough-talking dynamo from urban New Jersey who in
word and lifestyle radiated the love of the Lord.
St. Thomas Aquinas
A week of renewal open to the whole Archdiocese will
be held at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Alpharetta
October 12-16.
The renewal is designed with the family in mind,
offering something for everyone, from pre-school through
adult.
Father David Knight, popular author of “His Way” and
a leader at the Nazareth House of the Lord in Memphis,
Tennessee, will direct the renewal, which has as its theme
“Behold, I make all things new again.”
Father Knight will deliver a message each evening after
the 7:30 p.m. liturgy of the word.
Babysitting will be available and film programs will be
offered for school-aged children. Teenagers are
encouraged to attend the renewal itself.
Informal discussion sessions will be held following the
9:15 a.m. Mass during the renewal week. A nursery will be
available. The evening session is planned for 7:30 - 9 p.m.
For information, call 455-1017 or 993-2745.
Holy Family
Holy Family Church in Marietta will feature a “Focus
on Parenting” as its adult education theme for the fall
quarter and invites parents, teachers and all interested
members of the Archdiocese to attend.
The program will feature parental guidance tips
designed to help children become well rounded adults.
Father Pat Bishop, Director of Pastoral Ministry at St.
Pius, will give some concrete suggestions in the area of
moral and conscience development and decision-making.
His talk, “What Can We Tell Our Children?” will be
delivered at 8 p.m. on October 15 at the parish center.
Speakers to follow will include, Dr. Joseph A.
Richardson, Associate Dean of Georgia State University,
who will discuss “Living and Growing with Teens,” on
October 22.
Mrs. Karen Shaw, of the Family Life Department of
Catholic Social Services, will deal with “Parent Power,” in
which communications development will be stressed. This
program will be held October 29.
Last in the series will be a Parent Drug Awareness
Program to be conducted on November 19.
For further information, call Judy Kugler (973-2284).
St. Mary’s
Children sign up parishioners for a week of renewal
at St. Mary’s Church in Toccoa and Sacred Heart
Church in Hartwell. Father Richard Kieran, secretary
of education for the Archdiocese, directed the week of
renewal Sept. 13-21 with Deacon candidate Bob
Dotson and Sister Margaret Mcanoy, and lay leaders,
Don and Gayle Ehlers of Toccoa and Paul and Doris
Doker of Hartwell.
The parishes set up babysitting services, a bookstore
and went door-to-door, contacting at least 40 families
of inactive Catholics in each parish, inviting them to
the Week of Renewal. Morning and evening services
were held daily, alternating between the two parishes.
Below, Father Kieran is pictured at a service with St.
Mary’s pastor, Father Patrick McCormick, right.
Bauman Pleads Innocent
WASHINGTON (NC) -
Rep. Robert Bauman
(R-Md.), who has gained
national prominence for
his leadership of pro-life
forces in the House,
pleaded innocent Oct. 3 to
a charge of sexual
solicitation.
The charge came to
light Oct. 2 in a statement
in which Bauman also
admitted a recent bout
with alcoholism.
“As a result of the help
I have received from my
wife and family, my priest,
my doctor, and Alcoholics
Anonymous, my own
alcoholism is now under
control and my sobriety
restored,” he said.
“Equally important, I
have confessed my sins, as
my religion requires, and I
am in the state of grace
and will remain so with
the help of God,” added
Bauman, a Catholic.
According to Bauman’s
attorney, Thomas M.
O’Malley, Bauman is
charged with unlawful
sexual solicitation
“addressed for the purpose
of prostitution and an
i m m o ral and lewd
purpose.”
O’Malley said the
alleged offense occurred
March 2, a time at which
Bauman said he was going
through his heaviest
drinking.
Bauman’s not guilty
plea came during an
appearance in the District
of Columbia Superior
Court. O’Malley said the
U.S. attorney’s office has
agreed to drop the sexual
solicitation charge if
Bauman successfully
completes an alcoholism
rehabilitation program.
Bauman said in his
statement that during his
drinking crisis he turned
for help to a priest-friend
of 20 years, Father John
Harvey, an Oblate of St.
Francis deSales.
“In the course of
spiritual counseling by
Father Harvey, he
recommended that I
consult a clinical
psychologist who
specializes in the
treatment of alcoholism,”
said Bauman. He said
Father Harvey’s spiritual
assistance had been
invaluable.
“I strongly emphasize
that this allegation
involves only my personal
conduct and has nothing
to do with my office or
duties as a member of
Congress,” said Bauman.
“My drinking occurred
away from my official
duties and did not impair
my work.”
Bauman, first elected to
Congress in 1973, has
promoted several pieces of
anti-abortion legislation in
his years on Capitol Hill.
He sometimes is credited
with authoring the
legislative rider
subsequently introduced
by Rep. Henry Hyde
(R-Ill.) limiting federal
funding of abortion to
cases in which the life of
the mother is endangered.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (NC) - “I’m glad I’m
back. Thanks be to God.” These are the words of
Betty Hutton, the blonde movie star of the 1940s
and former housekeeper at St. Anthony’s
Rectory, Portsmouth, R.I., who returned to
Broadway recently in the hit musical “Annie.”
The words are from the playbill for the former
movie star who overcame depression and drugs
with the help of Father Peter Maguire, pastor of
the Rhode Island church where she joined the
Catholic church six years ago.
Father Maguire, pictured above with Miss
Hutton and her t wo gra nddaughters,
attended the opening night for Miss Hutton in
mid-September and reported “Betty did a
tremendous job. The critics came to see her and
gave her rave reviews.” Father Maguire said it was
the first time he had seen Miss Hutton on stage.
He added, “Betty was very happy, in tears, and
glad she was able to come back and redeem
herself.” She wanted to “go back and show she
could leave on top,” he added.

Catholics Called
To Conscience
NEW YORK (NC) - Three bishops and 40 theologians
called on U.S. Catholics to oppose war and nuclear
weapons and recommended that the Friday rule of
abstinence from meat be restored as a symbolic sharing
with the world’s poor.
In an Oct. 4 statement, titled “A Catholic Call to
Conscience,” they said, “As Roman Catholic citizens of
the United States, we speak at a time of great moral
urgency.
“We are dismayed that the presidential campaign of
1980 is so deeply characterized by the rhetoric of
militarism and the assertion that the United States must
continue to lead in the production of instruments of
death.”
The statement recommends:
- That the Friday rule of abstinence from meat be
restored as a symbolic sharing of the deprivation of the
world’s poor caused by the arms race;
- “That our church undertake a major effort to
mobilize effective opposition to modem war and
weaponry on a scale at least equal to that now directed
against abortion;”
- That Catholics be urged not to give or obey orders to
use nuclear weapons and that those now engaged in the
production of these and other weapons of mass
destruction be persuaded to seek other occupations;
- That Catholics be advised of their rights to object
conscientiously to military service and that efforts be
made to extend recognition under the law to selective
conscientious objection;
- That Catholics be urged to consider their moral
obligation with respect to taxation and support efforts to
establish a world peace tax fund;
-- That serious consideration be given to the
implications of maintaining a lifestyle based on
consumerism and oil consumption in the face of world
poverty.
In a reference to the involvement of evangelicals in the
1980 campaign, the statement pointed out: “All Christian
communities have been touched by a new surge of
evangelistic ferver and commitment which could and
should lead us to reflect upon these things and open the
way to that ‘entirely new attitude’ concerning war that
was called for by the fathers of Vatican II.
“Unfortunately, the reverse seems to be true. Today’s
self-proclaimed ‘Moral Majority’ seems more disposed to
support even greater steps toward the full militarization of
our country and society.”
