Violence Touches
Spokane Mission
SPOKANE, Wash. (NC)
- Voicing his deep concern
for the two priests and
nine sisters from Spokane
serving in the Quiche
region of Guatemala,
Bishop Lawrence H. Welsh
of Spokane said the
human tragedy of
undeclared civil war is
touching their lives and
curtailing their work.
“The most recent word
is that at least 12 people
of our parishes, some of
them working with our
priests and sisters, have
been kidnapped. All but
three are known to have
been tortured and killed.
No meetings are being held
and the population is
living in terror and
sadness,” he said in a
pastoral letter at the end
of October.
Since 1959 the diocese
has maintained several
mission posts in the Solola
region of the Quiche
highlands, named after the
predominant Indian tribe.
Along with their pastoral
work, the Spokane
missionaries have
established cooperatives,
schools and farm training
centers.
There are 180
missionaries from the
United States in
Guatemala: 95 priests and
85 sisters, with
Maryknollers leading both
groups.
In recent months the
Quiche area has been
affected by violence as
government troops and
landowners’ vigilantes have
attempted to repress
activities by leftist
guerrillas and others. Many
Indian villages have been
engulfed by the struggle.
The bishop of Santa Cruz
del Quiche and some
missionaries were forced
to abandon the area in
July after several priests
and lay helpers were
murdered.
Bishop Welsh, who
visited his own
missionaries last
December, said that he
saw “how richly the lives
of our priests and sisters
have been blessed by the
love and fraternity of the
Quiche people; as well, it
is clear how much fruit has
been borne in the lives of
these people because of
our missionaries’ work.”
However, they had to
face risk from serious
disease, earthquakes, poor
nutrition and the
hardships of adapting to a
foreign culture, the bishop
said. He added:
‘ ‘In the past year a
much more ominous
threat has been posed for
the people living in our
mission area. The
increasing instability of
Central America is now a
very terrifying part of
Guatemala. Since January
over 5,000 people have
been killed, each day 10 to
15 persons ‘disappear.’
The Catholic Church,
along with labor union
leaders, university
professors, students and
Indian leaders have been
menaced by ‘death squads’
bent on eliminating (what
they call) ‘communist
threats.’ Four missionary
priests have been
assassinated by
machinegun fire, two of
these in the diocese which
borders our own mission
area. Two attempts have
been made on the life of
bishops.”
Bishop Welsh said the
church is paying the price
for preaching the Gospel
“in word and deed.”
“As a consequence, our
missionaries’ programs of
feeding and educating
malnourisher and illiterate
children, of developing
agricultural projects, and
even of simply gathering
BELFAST, Northern
Ireland (NC) - Despite last
minute efforts by two
Catholic bishops, seven
jailed men began a hunger
strike in Northern Ireland
to demand political
prisoner status.
The hunger strike began
Oct. 27 and has sparked
marches from hundreds of
people supporting the
demand. The strike is also
supported by some other
prisoners who say they
have also been arrested for
political reasons because
of their opposition to
British rule in Northern
Ireland.
On Oct. 24 Cardinal
Tomas O’Fiaich of
Armagh and Bishop
Edward Daly of
Londonderry, both in
Northern Ireland, said
they had sought an
emergency meeting with
Humphrey Atkins, British
secretary of state for
Northern Ireland, in “a
last-minute effort” to
prevent the hunger strike.
They said British
authorities had not gone
far enough in meeting the
demands of prisoners and
asked both sides to end
the deadlock. Authorities
claim the prisoners are
common criminals.
“We, therefore, appeal
once more to the Northern
Ireland office and to the
prisoners to think again
during the next few days
of the awful consequences
which a hunger strike
could bring to the whole
community,” said a
statement issued by the
prelates.
the people for religious
services are now in critical
danger.”
“Their suffering is
indeed our own. We are
one family in Christ and
the hunger, harassment,
torture and unjust death
of one member of his
family is a pain felt by
all,” Bishop Welsh stated.
“Our priests and sisters in
Guatemala are clearly
risking their own blood by
continuing their work.”
The bishop said he is
planning to visit the Solola
mission soon to share
personally with the priests
and nuns a message of
support and prayers from
the Catholics in the
diocese.
The Quiche Indians are
among the largest of 22
tribes in Guatemala,
numbering some 3.6
million, or about 54
percent of the total
population. Most of them
are landless peasants living
in poverty.
Previously the
churchmen had offered
proposals for prison
reform as a means of
ending the dispute. These
proposals included
allowing prisoners to wear
their own clothing rather
than clothing issued by the
prison.
Prior to the hunger
strike British prison
authorities said they
would no longer require
prisoners to wear prison
uniforms. However, this
was not enough to satisfy
the protesting prisoners.
The seven prisoners on
the hunger strike are in the
Maze Prison in Belfast. Six
are members of the
outlawed Provisional Irish
Republican Army and the
other belongs to the Irish
National Liberation Army.
In a letter smuggled out
of the prison the strikers
said the fast “will be
pursued with the
determination of centuries
of uncompromising
resistance” to British rule.
British authorities said
they are not planning to
force feed the strikers,
even if this means they
will die.
Sinn Fein, political
wing of the Irish
Republican Army, said
other prisoners have
volunteered to take the
place of strikers who die
from hunger.

Death Penalty Struck Down
BOSTON (NC) -- The Massachusetts Supreme
Judicial Court Oct. 28 declared the state’s
recently enacted death penalty law
unconstitutional because it is “unacceptable
under contemporary standards of decency in its
unique and inherent capacity to inflict pain”
upon persons convicted of first degree murder.
USCC Receives
Romero’s Tapes
WASHINGTON (NC) - Tapes of Sunday
homilies in which Archbishop Oscar Romero of
San Salvador, El Salvador, publicized violations of
human rights and called for peace in his
strife-torn country have been entrusted for
safekeeping to the U.S. Catholic Conference.
About 100 tapes were brought from El
Salvador to the Washington headquarters of the
Catholic conference at the request of Bishop
Arturo Rivera Damas of Santiago, named
apostolic administrator of San Salvador after the
March assassination of Archbishop Romero.
Workers Rights Recognized
ORLANDO, Fla. (NC) - The chancellor of the
Hartford, Conn., Diocese urged memebers of the
Canon Law Society of America (CLSA) to be
“the brokers for social justice between employers
and workers” at Catholic schools, hospitals and
other institutions.
After recalling the recognition in papal
encyclicals and the Second Vatican Council that
workers have the right to bargain collectively with
employers and to choose the organization that
will represent them, Father Thomas J. Lynch said
“the principles and statements are not being
applied at all in some cases and applied poorly in
a number of others.”
Statistics Released
VATICAN CITY (NC) - Slight decreases in the
number of priests and Religious between 1977
and 1978 were offset in the Catholic Church by a
rise in the number of permanent deacons and lay
catechists.
According to new Vatican statistics released
Oct. 31, the number of persons engaged in
pcstoral ministry remained steady at about 1.6
million at the end of 1978. But lay people and
deacons made up a larger percentage of the total.
Bernard in Elected
VATICAN CITY (NC) - Archbishop Joseph
Bemardin of Cincinnati was one of 12 prelates
elected Oct. 24 by the world Synod of Bishops as
members of the synod’s permanent council.
The council handles matters relating to the
world Synod of Bishops in the three-year intervals
between general meetings of the synod.
YOUNGEST RECTOR INSTALLED - The
