La Educacion de Adultos
SISTER
THERESA AHERN,
M.S.B.T.
“La educacion es para
los chicos.” “El catecismo
ya me lo se.” “Ya yo hice
la Primera Comunion.”
Estas cosas se oyen a cada
rato. Y por el otro lado se
oye: “La Iglesia no me ha
ensenado eso.” “Por que
en la Iglesia Catolica no
hay estaudio de la Biblia
c omo en las otras
Iglesias?” “Yo me fui de la
Iglesia Catolica porque
nunca los Sacerdotes me
ensenaban de la Biblia.”
Son muchas las otras cosas
que decimos los Catolicos
cuando estamos charlando
sobre temas que pertencen
a la educacion de adultos.
Hace falta la educacion de
adultos - educacion en la
fe?
Seria imposible
imaginar a unos padres
sacando a su hijo a su hija
de la escuela cuando
aprendieron a leer y
escribir por que ya no les
hacia falta nada mas. Seria
ridiculo. Sin embargo
muchos de los adultos de
la comunidad andan por
alii con el mismo
conocimiento que tuvieron
al salir del catecismo a los
ocho anos. Pensamos que
el catecismo es para los
chicos. Y por cierto lo es.
Pero, el adulto que quiere
seguir creciendo en la vida
de la gracia tiene que
seguir alimentandose con
el estudio. La educacion
religiosa de los adultos de
la comunidad cristiana es
imprecindible para el
crecimiento en la fe.
Como vamos creciendo
en la vida natural, vamos
adquieriendo nuevas
experiencias, y nuevos
conocimientos. Todos
sabemos mas hoy que hace
seis meses. Y asi todos
tenemos destrezas hoy que
no tuvimos de ninos. Asi
mismo pasa en la vida de la
gracia. Todos debemos
saber mas hoy que hace
seis meses. Todos debemos
tener destrezas en la
oracion, en la caridad, en
el apostolado destrezas de
cristiano que van
desarrollandose cada dia.
Es urgente que la
comunidad catolica
despierte a la obligacion
que tenga cada uno de
seguir creciendo. En la
vida de la gracia hay que
crecer o nos morimos. En
la comunidad de Atlanta
hay muchas oportunidades
de seguir profundizando
en la fe:
- cada domingo en la
parroquia del Inmaculado
Corazon de Maria a las
11:30 de la manana hay
clases para adultos en
temas dela fe que son de
interes para todos.
- para los Cursillistas
cada jueves en la noche
hay la Escuela de Lideres
en San Pio X HS. Aqui los
temas introducidos en el
fin de semana del Cursillo
se profundizen.
- ademas, cada persona
interesada en tomar parte
en la comunidad puede
asistir a la Ultreya donde
un tiempo se dedica al
estudio de la Biblia, o
puede asistir al grupo de
oracion donde tambien un
tiempo es dedicado a la
Biblia. La Ultreya es el
viernes a las 8:00, el grupo
de oracion, el niercoloes a
las 8:00. Las dos en
Inmaculado Corazon de
Maria.
Es importante
aprovechar por lo menos
una de estas oportunidades
de educacion religiosa para
que tengamos una
comunidad creciendo en
fe. Ojala cada uno de
nosotros empezemos a
tomar parte en este
creciemiento.

An Unsung Hero
BY C M. MORSE
Mr. Morse is a parishioner
at Immaculate Heart of Mary
Church in A tlanta.
Do you feel like you
are making a sacrifice to
attend Mass once each
week-end? How about
attending Mass four
times each week-end?
Do you scoot in just
before the priest starts
touches people when she
plays for the couple
beginning a beautiful
new life on their wedding
day. She also touches the
family and friends of a
deceased one at that
one’s final Church
ceremony of the Funeral
Mass.
Of course she gets
paid for her activities,
but one does not get rich
Margie Watson
the celebration and scoot
out just as he leaves the
altar? How about being
there fifteen minutes
before and a few minutes
after each celebration?
Impossible, you say!
It is not only possible,
but actually happens
every week-end at
Immaculate Heart of
Mary Church. We are
talking about Mrs.
Marjorie Watson, the
organist. I’m sure she has
her counter-parts all over
the Diocese, probably all
over the world, but all
we are talking about here
is Margie.
Whatever Mass you
attend on the week-end
you are greeted by the
soft melodious tones of
the organ. Not so loud
that you cannot enjoy a
few moments of pre-Mass
meditation, but just soft
enough to keep you in a
wonderful reflective
mood.
You can notice the
organ up in the left hand
corner of the Church,
but you cannot see
Margie. She belongs to
those little tufts of hair
shining above the organ.
Many parishioners would
not recognize her and
our quiet modest Margie
prefers it that way.
And yet our relatively
unknown, unsung hero
touches the hearts of
more parishioners than
any other one person
connected with the
parish.
Along with the four
Masses each week-end
she reaches the
congregation through the
choir at the 10:00 a.m.
Mass each Sunday from
October through July
with special meaning
during the Lenten and
Advent seasons. She
working for the Church.
She has 45 students a
week for organ and piano
lessons. She stays busy,
but never so busy that
she will turn down a
sincere request to play.
Incidentally, she will
never turn down an
invitation to play bridge
or backgammon. Still she
finds time to maintain a
beautiful rose garden.
She has also seen to it
that her daughter living
in Rome, Ga. is an
accomplished musician.
Oddly enough it was
her daughter who led her
to her activities at
Immaculate Heart of
Mary Church 21 years
ago. The individual who
played the organ then
was relieved of her
duties. The pastor, Msgr.
Reagan, called St. Pius
High School inquiring if
one of the students could
serve temporarily until
an organist was found.
Margie’s daughter, a
freshman at the school,
offered her mother’s
services. Margie
consented to play as a
substitute for three
weeks. That was 1959
and the Parish is
fortunate that she has
been there ever since.
She has served well three
Monsignors, Reagan,
Burtenshaw, and now
Kiernan.
During that time,
besides experiencing the
changes of three Pastors,
she also experienced
changes in the music-
played in Catholic
Churches. Margie was
trained as a Church
organist with both Saint
Basil’s and Saint
Gregory’s Hymnals. She
never expected that Saint
Basil’s Hymnal would be
banned or that one day
in a Catholic Church at a
formal service she would
play Hymns written by
John Wesley or Martin
Luther or traditional
Jewish melodies.
In her youth she
probably never expected
she would play the organ
for Bob Hope, Danny
Kaye and other
celebrities. During World
War II she did just that at
Treasure Island, San
Francisco. Margie was
serving her country as a
WAVE then and her
audience usually
consisted of 10,000
sailors, and a few other
WAVES. Margie enjoyed
it except for an incident
or two. Danny Kaye,
with his helter-skelter
antics, danced on top of
the organ and kept
kicking her music off to
the delight of the
audience, but not Margie.
Since she was trained as a
Church organist the Navy
had to bring in from San
Francisco one of the
leading theatre organists
to teach her theatre
organ music. She has
some old silent movies to
which she enjoys playing
apporpriate music on the
piano to the delight of a
select audience.
She also enjoys her
work at Immaculate
Heart of Mary although
it of course has brought
some exciting moments.
One Saturday after
playing at a lengthy
full-church funeral which
touched her more than
normally, Margie went
home. Seemed as she had
hardly gotten to the
point of relaxation when
her phone rang. It was a
frantic call from the
rectory that the church
was already filled again
and the bridal party had
even arrived. ‘Tis beside
the point that Margie
knew she had never been
informed of the wedding.
She gathered herself and
necessities together and
jumped in the car and
back to church. She says
on those fortunately
infrequent mad dash
occasions the Good Lord
is always there to lessen
traffic and make all the
traffic lights green. Still
those assembled felt it
was her fault and there
were few expressions of
thanks.
However, she has
received some beautiful
thank you notes. These
come sometimes from
principals of weddings
and sometimes from
distraught individuals of
memorial or funeral
Masses. She cherishes and
saves them all.
Margie, we hope you
will cherish this for
yourself and for all the
church organists
throughout our
Archdiocese particularly,
and the country. We
salute all of you and say
thanks and God bless
you!

“Walk Thru” Planned
BY RON SCHUESSLER
On Saturday, December 6, 1980 the
Corpus Christi parish family in Stone
Mountain will sponsor an “Old Testament
Walk Thru the Bible” from 9 a.m. to 5
p.m. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and
lunch will be provided. The “Old
Testament Walk Thru” was planned for the
first Saturday of Advent to aid in
preparation for Christmas.
The “Old Testament Walk Thru” will
bring new meaning to the names, places
and events of the 2000 years of Old
Testament history. During the seminar,
participants will be led through the major
events of the Old Testament in a way that
will bring these events alive. Unique small
group interaction will make these Old
Testament moments more memorable.
There will be none of the traditional
teacher-lecturing/student-notes instruction.
Imagine knowing from memory the
entire saga of the Old Testament-having all
the people, locations, times and events
fitted together in a clear and easy-to-use
way. Imagine knowing the character
strengths of the personalities and in which
books the key spiritual truths and lessons
are found. Think of the benefit as you read
and study God’s Word, of knowing what
came before and what will follow. It will
bring new meaning and depth to our Bible
study.
Corpus Christi is only the third Cathqliy
Church in the entire country to sponsor a
“Walk Thru.” Two yearn ago, a Catholic
Church in California conducted a
successful “Walk Thru,” and they were
followed this past October by a Catholic
Church in Indiana.
Corpus Christi pastor Rev. Thomas
Kenny and high school of religion
coordinator Sister Dolores Staudt along
with a Corpus Christi parishioner attended
an Old Testament Walk Thru at the
Episcopal Cathedral of St. Philip last
February. An enthusiastic Fr. Kenny said
of the experience, “We should have
attended sooner-Corpus Christi needs this
unique experience.”
The “Walk Thru” is presented by Walk
Thru the Bible Seminars of Smyrna,
Georgia. Since their beginning in 1974, the
“Walk Thru” has been presented to some
285,000 attendees in the U.S. and some
ten foreign countries. Some 1300 seminars
have been conducted by an experienced
team of over 30 people. Over 500 seminars
will be presented in 1980, with a present
waiting list of almost one year.
Corpus Christi invites fellow Catholics
and Christians to join them in their walk
through the Old Testament. High schoolers
and up should benefit from this unique and
unforgettable experience.
For further information or registration
forms please contact Sister Dolores
(469-0597), Maddie Dearie (294-7111), or
Ron Schuessler (294-6630). A follow-up
New Testament Walk Thru will be
presented at Corpus Christi on March 14,
1981, the first Saturday, of Lent. Come
Walk With Us!
