Adviento -
Tiempo de Espera
POR SISTER THERESA AHERN
Mientras se acerca el
invierno, la luz del dia va
disminuyendo. No son los
dias tan largos como en el
verano. A veces el frio, la
falta de color en la
naturaleza, la oscuridad
nos deprime. Es por eso
que el tiempo de Adviento
es tan importante. No
debemos dejarlo pasar sin
unos momentos de
reflexion sobre su
significado,
El dia mas corto del
ano es el primer dia del
invierno - el 21 de
diciembre. Despues de ese
dia, las horas de luz van
alargandose cada dia. Es
por eso que la celebracion

Missionaries Being Replaced
NEW YORK (NC) -- As the number of foreign
missionaries declines, work in young churches is
increasingly turned over to national clergy, Religious and
lay catechists, reports the director of the Catholic
Church’s worldwide missionary effort.
Cardinal Agnelo Rossi, prefect of the Congregation for
the Evangelization of Peoples, said the hierarchy of many
young churches is now almost entirely indigenous, though
in some cases the European or American bishop has been
so outstanding he remained at the request of the people.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (NC)
- A moderate on doctrine
and a progressive on social
justice issues: those are the
two most common labels
applied to Archbishop
John Robert Roach of St.
Paul-Minneapolis, new
president of the National
Conference of Catholic
Bishops and the U.S.
Catholic Conference since
his election Nov. 11.
But there’s more. The
labels say nothing of his
expertise as an
administrator, involvement
in Minnesota political life
and support of
ecumenism.
Appointed archbishop
in May 1975 he was the
first native Minnesotan to
head the archdiocese,
which quickly began to
reflect his influence.
Within a month of his
appointment as
archbishop, he donned a
beaded gown and
ceremonial Indian
headdress for a Mass to
show solidarity with the
state’s Native American
population. The action
came during the U.S.
bishops’ regional
bicentennial hearing in
Minneapolis.
His stands on social
justice issues continued in
his own archdiocese with a
pledge for personal
support and $40,000 to
aid Indian ministry; with
the formation of a
20-member task force to
study women’s rights in
the church; with
establishment of an office
to aid divorced and
separated Catholics and
with his support of the J.
P. Stevens and Nestle
boycotts.
Archbishop Roach
Despite calling it a
“no-win” situation, he
agreed to chair a U.S.
bishops’ committee on
ways to implement
resolutions passed at the
1976 Detroit “Call to
Action” conference on
social justice. The
conference, which among
other actions backed
married priests, the
ordination of women and
nuclear disarmament, was
dominated by “articulate
and well -prepared
lobbyists,” he said.
Perhaps his most
controversial involvement
in a social justice issue --
which became enmeshed
in St. Paul city politics --
was his statement on
homosexual rights, issued
in early 1978 before St.
Paul voters repealed the
city’s homosexual rights
ordinance. Archbishop
Roach called homosexual
rights a complex issue
involving moral concerns,

human and civil rights and
social values.
Archbishop Roach
brought the church’s voice
to state issues. He said in
1976 and repeated often:
“It is appropriate, as a
matter of fact, essential,
that the church address
itself to those questions
which affect the dignity of
people ... or affect those
things which in any way
touch on Gospel values in
political issues.”
Archbishop Roach is
also considered progressive
on ecumenical affairs. In
1976 he discussed the U.S.
bishops’ “Statement on
Catholic-Jewish Relations”
with Minnesota rabbis and
the Jewish community and
preached at a Sabbath-eve
service in a synagogue to
1,500 people. In 1979 he
became the first Catholic
to preach to a traditional
Lutheran Reformation
festival in Minnesota. He
told some 4,000 Lutherans
at the service: “We have
gone too long as a people
separated. When we look
at the plea of Jesus Christ
for unity, it is hard to
regard our division as
anything but sinful.”
And in November 1980
he and the chief bishop of
the American Lutheran
Church shared the pulpit
in a service highlighting
common elements of both
faiths.
On matters of the
Catholic faith, however,
Archbishop Roach is
considered moderate, a
trait which gained national
attention in 1978 when he
rebuked a priest who
surrendered his pulpit to
feminist Gloria Steinem.

Zelma Key is perhaps
Sister Nancyann Turner’s
star pupil.
Over a year ago, things
looked bleak for Zelma
and her family. Her
husband had broken his
arm and couldn’t work.
Her baby was sick with
bronchitis and needed
medical attention. Without
ready cash, it was difficult
to manage.
A friend told them
about “The Place.” It was
here that they found work
to tide them over and
knowledge of a clinic that
offered help for their
child.
Together, Zelma and
her husband cut and
hauled wood at “The
Place.” Zelma later
became a part-time
worker, assisting in the
craft shop and helping the
sisters.
One day, as she was
balling yarn for weaving,
she watched another
woman working on the
loom and asked if she
could learn the technique.
What followed was a
marriage of talent and
opportunity. Zelma’s
handsome wall hangings,
placemats and rugs now
adorn the walls of “The
Place” side by side with
the skillful work of Sister
Nancyann. Her pride in
what she does is enhanced
by a quiet confidence in
her work.

NCCJ Official
Criticizes Smith
NC News Service
David Hyatt, a Catholic
who is president of the
National Conference of
Christians and Jews, has
described as “a racist slur”
the Rev. Bailey Smith’s
reported remark that
Jewish people have
“funny-looking noses.”
Mr. Smith is president
of the Southern Baptist
Convention. He made the
remark in jest, he said, in a
sermon at his church in
Del City, Okla., near
Oklahoma City, in late
summer. He had stirred
another controversy earlier
with a remark during a
religious assembly in
Dallas that God does not
hear Jews’ prayers.
Meanwhile, despite the
controversy, an Oklahoma
City rabbi said Mr. Smith’s
latest comment has drawn
Christians and Jews closer
together.
The comments - which
Mr. Smith said he made in
late August - did not draw
public attention until
mid-November after a
copy of the tape was
obtained by a rabbi, who
gave it to a reporter in
Texas.
Mr. Smith later said he
made the remarks
teasingly and that he
apologized to those he
offended.
The news editor of the
Baptist Press, Dan Martin,
suggested the flap over Mr.
Smith’s statement on
noses was exaggerated. “I
felt like it was reaching for
a story on that one,” he
said of the media reaction.
But in a news statement
Hyatt said that Mr.
Smith’s statements
reflected “the kind of
latent anti-Semitism that
exists in this nation.”
“As a Catholic and a
Christian I find his
comments repugnant,
outrageous and dangerous.
They must not be allowed
to go unanswered,” he
said. Hyatt said Mr. Smith
“in no way speaks for the
Christian community as a
whole. “Indeed, his
attitude toward Jews, if
his remarks are an
indication, is not only
anti-Semitic and
anti-Christian as well, but
it violates the spirit and
teachings of Jesus,” Hyatt
said.
