Season’s Sights: Around The Archdiocese
St. Patrick’s
BY ALICE McCABE
St. Patrick’s Church, Norcross, is getting into the
Christmas spirit. Parishioners are drawing names of other
parish families from the Kristkindl box in the church
vestibule.
Sometime during Advent, they are to surprise those
chosen with a gift of themselves such as homemade bread,
a plant raised from a cutting, spiritual bouquet, a phone
call. The transactions are to be anonymous until
Christmas at which time the families are encouraged to
meet and become acquainted.
“Kristkindl is an opportunity to step out of ourselves
to see and serve the Christ Child in others,” a recent
church bulletin said.
Another Christmas special will be a Homecoming on
Christmas for inactive Catholics. Evangelization chairman
Madelyn Reach and her committee have been in training
for several weeks to learn approaches and loving ways to
invite neighbors and acquaintances back into the church
family. Even high school students have been encouraged
to learn how to communicate their faith to their peers.
The third annual “Christmas 400” which provides
dinners and gifts to the needy under the direction of the
St. Vincent de Paul Society, will again reach out to
Gwinnett’s poor.
The number 400 comes from the 400 families in St.
Patrick’s when the custom began in 1977. Each family
volunteered to adopt a needy family of like.size to bring
them Christmas dinner. That first year, 360 families
responded, more than Gwinnett Family and Children’s
Services could supply names for. The overflow of sharing
went to those in the county jail. Today’s parish roster of
some 700 families are encouraged to select gift clothing at
St. Vincent de Paul’s Take-Your-Pick thrift store on Jones
Street, where prices are low or non-existent for those
cases.
St. Patrick’s children’s party, with Santa, carols, movies
and games, will be given by the Men’s Club Dec. 14 at 2
p.m. in DeSales Hall. Children will bring a dollar gift and
some canned goods for the poor.
The men of the parish, including the pastors, Fathers
Joseph Meehan and Christopher Yamold, both
Missionaries of St. Francis de Sales, will have a retreat
weekend Dec. 13-14 at Holy Spirit Monastery, Conyers.
High point of the Christmas season, of course, will be
Midnight Mass and the daytime liturgies at which the
church choir, directed by Kathy Kadel, the children’s and
folk choirs, directed by Cheri Haefner, will sing.
A New Year’s Eve party, sponsored by the Men’s Club,
will be held in the church hall at $5 per person. The price
includes food and dancing to the disc jockey music of
John Morgan. Pat Geipel (449-5629) and Maureen
Waldron (449-7908) are taking reservations from the first
70 couples to call.
Village Of St. Joseph
Families were the center of a Thanksgiving service and
dinner held at the Village of St. Joseph before the
holiday.
Forty day and resident students and their parents
participated in the liturgy celebrated by Father Jacob
Bollmer, chaplain. The children carried small orange
candles to the altar during the Offertory procession.

Anointing Of Sick
At Cathedral Dec. 17
BY FATHER LOUIS NAUGHTON
Archbishop Thomas Donnellan will be the Principal
Celebrant of a communal celebration of the Sacrament of
the Anointing of the Sick on Wednesday, Dec. 17 at the
Cathedral of Christ the King. Those who are eligible to
receive this Sacrament should avail of the opportunity of
doing so on that occasion.
Many people have had the impression that a Catholic
must be dying in order to be eligible to receive this
Sacrament. Such an impression is INCORRECT. On the
contrary, it is strongly recommended that an elderly
person in weak condition because of advancing years
should receive this Sacrament. It is hoped that as many as
possible of our elderly parishioners who are in this
condition will avail of the opportunity to receive this
great Sacrament.
People who are seriously sick, especially those
preparing for major surgery, are also eligible to receive this
Sacrament. When serious illness prevails, this Sacrament
should be received as soon as possible. In the case of
obvious dangerous illness, this Sacrament should never of
course be put off until a very late stage.
The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick prolongs
the concern which Our Lord showed for both the bodily
and spiritual welfare of the sick, as the Gospels clearly
testify, and which He asked His followers to show also.
Those eligible for this Sacrament are Catholics who are
seriously ill. Elderly people may be anointed if they are in
a weak condition although no dangerous illness is present.
Included are those who, because of their weak condition,
are unable to come to Church on a regular basis. Children
who are seriously ill may be anointed if they have
sufficient use of reason to be comforted by this
Sacrament.
Sickness is more than a medical phenomenon; sickness
can be serious enough to cause a crisis situation in our
lives with regard to our salvation and to our life in and
with Christ in the Community of the Church. To be sick
includes bodily pain, psychic depression, isolation from
one’s profession as well as from normal human society,
especially as experienced in the family. Sickness often
engenders impatience, sulkiness and excessive self
pre-occupation. Sickness sometimes gives rise to spiritual
dryness, hardness of heart, discouragement and even
despair. In such ways, a person’s sickness or state of
impaired health can weaken or undermine his (her)
relationship with Christ. This Sacrament therefore, brings
about spiritual healing and, if God so wills, bodily healing
as well.
The Grace of the Sacrament of the Anointing of the
Sick helps us to overcome specific obstacles to Grace and
Salvation arising from the situation of sickness. In this
Sacrament, Christ always strengthens and supports the
person in his (her) sickness.
The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is for
Catholics who are suffering from a degree of sickness
which is causing considerable concern. Sickness embraces
many forms including illness demanding serious surgery,
weakness due to advancing years, chronic illness, illness
which considerably confines activities, serious deafness or
blindness, psychiatric illness such as depression or severe
neurosis or serious addiction - in fact any illness which is
considered serious constitutes a legitimate condition for
receiving this Sacrament.
When illness is proving such a burden as to be
endangering the sick person’s faith and confidence in God,
this then is an added reason for such a person to avail of
the opportunity of receiving the Sacrament of the
Anointing of the Sick.
In order to be well prepared, persons planning to
receive this Sacrament should, if possible, receive the
Sacrament of Penance beforehand. However, not being
able to get to Confession should not be an obstacle to
receiving the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick.
The Communal Celebration of this great Sacrament
will take place within the context of the 12:i0 Noon Mass
at the Cathedral on Wednesday, Dec. 17 and a special area
in the Cathedral will be reserved for those planning to
receive the Sacrament. Further information may be
obtained from the priests of the Parish (phone 233-2145).
