KIERAN Scouting continues to be the world’s largest youth movement. In this nation alone, 4 million boys and 214 million girls belonged to the Boy Scouts of America and the Girl Scouts of America in 1980. The single largest sponsoring body of Scouting are the Churches. Topping the list is the United Methodist Church, sponsoring 10,744 Boy Scout troops across the country. The Catholic Church sponsors 10,380 units with a membership of 287,957 boys. Sponsors within the Church include lay organizations, Catholic schools and the Knights of Columbus. A recent survey sponsored by the Boy Scouts of America has determined the likes of today’s youth. This survey revealed that the method of Scouting still captivates youth. A young boy’s desire for the outdoors and his natural inclination to band together with his peers in the patrol system is as popular today as it was when Scouting began in 1908. Thus we find that at many of our parishes, youth will come out for Scouting with a spontaneity which we would dearly love to see in all levels of Church activities. Bishop Joseph Hart, Advisor for the National Catholic Committee on Scouting, says we should capitalize on youth’s enthusiasm for Scouting. He suggests that a Scout troop at the parish can be a way for the parish to deliver total ministry to youth. The parish can take advantage of the natural grouping of youth for can be the guest of honor at an overnight or other troop outdoor activity. A concrete and successful way to provide ongoing spiritual formation for the Catholic Boy Scout or Girl Scout is through the Religious Emblem the Campfire Girls can choose: the Marian Program (for the 12-15 year old), the I LIVE MY FAITH program (for 9-11 year old), or the GOD LOVES ME (for 1-3 graders). These booklets are available through the Northwest Girl Scout Office Father Kieran Honored Father John C. Kieran, Pastor of Saint Philip Benizi Church, Jonesboro, and Diocesan Scout Chaplain, has been nominated to receive the Silver Beaver Award on February 26, 1981. He has actively promoted Scouting and served as the Archbis hop’s representative to the Boy Scouts of America and the Girl Scouts of America. Father Kieran’s Silver Beaver citation credits him with starting the W Fr. John C. Kieran Inter-Faith Scout Retreat for boys and directing this annual event eight years. for Along with his local Scout activities, Father Kieran served three terms on the Board of the National Catholic Committee on Scouting. As a member of this board, he had a big part in rewriting the Ad Altare Dei program for Catholic Scouts. He has served as Chaplain at two National Scout Jamborees: Idaho in 1968 and Pennsylvania in 1973. In 1977 he represented the National Catholic Committee at the Scout Jamborora in Ireland. Father John Kieran is the first priest ever to receive the Silver Beaver Award in Atlanta. Scouting and supplement their program with spiritual formation sessions. This can be through visits by the parish staff to the troop meetings, with a brief message about Christ and the gospel. When possible, staff persons Programs. Both the Boy Scouts of America and the Youth Department of the United States Catholic Conference provide attractive, up to date study programs for Catholic youth in Scouting. Girls in Scouting or in (522-1160) office. or at my Three emblem programs have been developed by the N ational Catholic Committee on Scouting for the Catholic Youth in Boy Scouting. They are: The PIUS Xn for the high school level; the AD ALTARE DEI for the 12-13 year old and the PARVULI DEI for Catholics in Cub Scouting. These elective programs are available at the Atlanta Area Council Office (577-4810). Catholic leaders and parents of Scouts should be familiar with these tools to foster spiritual formation within Scouting. A pot luck style dinner is arranged each year at which the Archbishop presents emblems to the young men and women who have completed either the Marian, Ad Altare Dei or Pius XII Programs. This year’s presentations will be held March 20th at Corpus Christi Church in Stone Mountain. The Annual Scout Banquet is an opportunity for all our Scout leaders to meet with the Archbishop and hear his thoughts and advice on Scouting as Ministry. Customarily Archbishop Donnellan recognizes adult Scouters for outstanding leadership with the SAINT GEORGE and SAINT ANNE adult recognition medals. Leaders, parents and friends of troops sponsored within the Archdiocese (both B.S.A. and G.S.A.) are invited.
