SR. DOLORES STAUDT
Fifty Golden Years
BY MARY BETH
MARINO
A nun, teacher, mother
to many, grandmother to
children, missionary,
fund-raiser; this describes
in a very minute way, how
people relate to Sister
Dolores Staudt from
Corpus Christi Church in
Stone Mountain.
Sister Dolores is
celebrating her 50th
golden jubilee as a Sister
of Humility of Mary this
year.
Sister Dolores is the
daughter of the late Mr.
and Mrs. R.Z. Staudt of
Canton, Ohio. Her sister,
Sister Elizabeth C. Staudt,
resides in Youngstown,
Ohio, and teaches at
Youngstown University.
After graduating as
valedictorian of her class,
Sister entered the Sisters
of Humility Convent. Her
studies began at Saint
Mary of the Woods in
Indiana with a B.A.
degree; and an M.S. degree
from Villanova University.
Various classes included
attending Notre Dame,
Ball State, Xavier, Boston
University, Seton Hall, and
University of California at
Berkeley.
Sister Dolores’ teaching
career began at Villa
Maria, Wickliffe, Ohio. She
also gave 15 years of
dedication and service to
Sister Dolores Staudt
Central Catholic High
School, Canton, Ohio. The
Ohio Department of
Education honored her for
her development of the
Senior Science Program of
the Honors Curriculum.
As moderator of
mission groups, Sister
Dolores, working with
Central Catholics Mission
Club, sponsored the
Maryknoll Nuns and sent
more than 500 pounds of
medicine to them, and
over 1000 books to the
Christian Brothers African
School.
Sister is presently
directing High School
students at Corpus Christi
in School of Religion. She
has directed successful
youth activities and the
students are very
enthusiastic with her
annual “Fast-a-Thon.” She
also teaches Adult
Education and organizes
Confirmation every year.
She is well known for her
audio-visual techniques
used as presentations for
Adult Education and
liturgical functions.
To look at Sister “Dee”
as she is called at Corpus
Christi is to see 50 years of
vitality, strength and love.
Her unending works over
the years as director of
religious programs for
youths as well as adults,
her ministries in service,
shine in the eyes of those
who have gained so much
from her constant giving.
A concelebrated Mass
of Thanksgiving will be
held at Corpus Christi,
February 15, at 12:30 pm
with a reception
immediately following.
Neighboring priests, nuns
and parishioners are
welcome.

Father John
McDonough had long
looked forward to the
summer of 1956. A
lifetime dream was about
to come true. The
Dixie-Bostonian Father,
stationed at the
Cathedral of Christ the
King in Atlanta, was
going to Ireland.
It would be an
historic trip for the
Cathedral’s assistant
pastor.
‘‘We had it
well-planned,’’
remembers now
Monsignor McDonough.
“Father Mike Manning
was going; he was
stationed in Gainesville.
So was Father John
O’Shea, who was at the
Fe deral Pen, and
Monsignor Danny
Bourke, pastor of St.
Mary’s in Augusta. We
were all priests of the
same Diocese, of course,
and we certainly did not
know that during the
trip, all that would
| change.”
But change it did.
The trip to Ireland
was memorable for
Father John - a well
known Irish songster.
From Dublin, after a
royal tour of the island,
he and his compadres
flew to Rome. On a boat
trip down the Rhine, the
foursome met some
parishioners from St.
Peter’s in LaGrange.
“They told us that
Father Don Kieman had
just been sent to their
parish,” remembers
Father John, “as
temporary pastor.” “I
was delighted to hear this
because I was due for a
parish and figured on my
return, I would be
assigned there as
permanent pastor. It was
really good news that the
Mansours from LaGrange
gave us.”
But more hectic news
was to come.
The end of June saw
the four Georgians in
Orly Airport in Paris.
“We were going to
London to meet with
Archbishop O’Hara, our
own Bishop, who was
also Apostolic Delegate
to Great Britian. It was
the last stop before
returning home. The
Paris Airport was packed
but there was no
mistaking Msgr.
P.J.O’Connor in the
crowd. And he had the
big news.”
Monsignor Patrick J.
O’Connor from Savannah
was stationed at Catholic
University in
Washington, D. C. and
was also successfully
recruiting Irish priests for
Georgia. He was on his
way from Rome to the
U.S. This flying cleric,
well known in some
Vatican circles, had
acquired the “red hot
rumor” from a source in
the Eternal City.
“Standing there in the
airport, he told us the
decision had been made.
The State of Georgia,
long-called the Diocese
of Savannah-Atlanta,
would, within a few
days, be named two
dioceses, Savannah in the
South and Atlanta in the
north. We were very
surprised and doubtful,
but P.J. seemed to
know.”
Before leaving the
four tourists, Monsignor
Berryman—

a freak excess,” he said “...
As horrible as it was, what
was new was that it was
nuns and they were
Americans. There is a long
list of killings.”
Concerning the
promised investigation
into the December
slayings, he cited his own
sources, and the recent
statement by former
Ambassador to El Salvador
Robert White, who said
publicly that no
investigation was being
conducted.
Some 10,000 people
have died in violence in El
Salvador in the last year.
Berryman said that last
fall the violence had
become centered on
“disappearances” of those
who were becoming
leaders in their
communities.
The government is
“powerless to go after the
(leftist) guerrillas, so they
go after anybody who
O’Connor warned them ?
to be “dutifully*
surprised ’’ when •
Archbishop O’Hara •
unfolded the news in J
London. “P.J. never gave *
us his source, but he was •
right on the money,” •
says Father John. “We •
met with the Archbishop m
in London and almost *
immediately he gave us •
the astonishing word. •
The Diocese of Atlanta *
had been created. The m
announcement would be *
made July 2. Three of us •
would be a part of the •
new diocese. Monsignor *
Bourke, stationed in *
Augusta, would stay with •
Savannah. And that’s the •
way we heard it.” •
Over one hundred *
years earlier, in July *
1850, the mother church *
of Georgia, the Diocese •
of Savannah, had been •
established. The J
importance of Atlanta as *
a Catholic settlement •
dawned over eighty years •
later when the state J
became the Diocese of *
Savannah-Atlanta in *
Januaury 1937. And •
now, as the month of •
July began in 1956, •
Atlanta, as a Catholic £
community, had come of •
age. It was not only the •
youngest church in the •
U.S., but, with a ?
territory of 22,000 *
square miles, it was one •
of the largest. •
Father John*
McDonough returned to •
Atlanta with many things •
to say about his •
European trip. He also J
returned wondering if *
that first pastorate in •
LaGrange was still in the •
cards. •
In September 1956, it *
so happened. •
looks like they may be
leaders,” he said. “They’re
the leaders so if you get
them, you can decapitate
whatever is going on.”
He said the government
“obviously has a right to
defend itself against
guerrillas,” but asked,
“what is the right of a
government to kill
unarmed people?”
The U.S. government,
and Americans, must ask
“what kind of government
we’re supporting,” he said.

LOWER BACK PROBLEM
TESTIMONIAL
Dear Dr. Margolies,
"I came to you looking for relief from a lower back problem
which was adversely affecting my career. I originally injured my
back in a collision with the outfield fence in 1976 in Richmond,
Va, The problem was recurrent and after many visits to
Orthopedic specialists who diagnosed my problem as "Spon-
dylolisthesis"and discussed fusion operations, i decided to take
the advice of a friend, your patient, and visit you.
I must admit that at first I was a little skeptical and in fact, a
little afraid of being further injured.
After a few visits, I was very impressed with the concept itself and with the gentle and genuinely con
cerned manner in which you presented yourself, not to mention the definite response my body was ex
periencing. I found myself able to swing the bat much more freely and began to hit the ball harder and
more frequently. I also felt better generally,.being able to sleep better and give my body the opportunity it
needed to rest and repair itself.
I sincerely appreciate the treatment and plan to be a lifetime proponent of Chiropractic care.
Signed.
