St. Pat’s Fetes
Father Meehan
Father Joe Meehan, MSFS, pastor of St. Patrick’s
Church in Norcross, will celebrate the 15th anniversary of
his priesthood March 5. Parishioners of St. Patrick’s will
mark the occasion Sunday, March 8 with a noon Mass
followed by a covered dish luncheon.
Father Joe, reared on the north side of Dublin, began
thinking about the priesthood in 1958 when he was
injured in a track race. Because of the injury, he had to
stop all activities. Time for reflection gave him the
impetus to consider the priesthood. After reading several
books on St. Francis de Sales, he chose the Fransalian
Order and was ordained in 1967.
St. Patrick’s is presently building a new church to
replace the small structure that now seats only 200. The
parish has 750 families in its community. Ground was
broken last August and the first Mass at the new church is
expected to be celebrated this summer.
The anniversary celebration has been coordinated by
Pat and Maurus Hack, parishioners of St. Patrick’s.

“Ndibalema!”
BY DEBRA JONES
N d i balema-the name
means “I will overcome”
and it aptly fits Ss. Peter
and Paul’s visiting priest,
better known as Fr.
Ignatius.
Bom in a village called
Muhutwe in Tanzania,
Africa, Fr. Ignatius
decided after 18 years as
an ordained priest,
teaching high school
students in his native
country, that he would
like to further his
studies.
He applied and was
accepted at the
University of Scranton in
Pennsylvania. While
living with the Jesuits he
earned his Masters in
Science degree. Upon
graduation he took a
year off before returning
to his homeland and
remained with the
Jesuits.
Initially Fr. had
applied in New Orleans
to serve as visiting pastor.
It was while in New
Orleans that he met Fr.
Richard Kieman. Fr.
Fr. Ignatius
Kieman mentioned he
had a sister in Africa and
offered him the
opportunity to come to
Sts. Peter and Paul
should the position in
New Orleans become
unavailable. Fortunately,
for Ss. Peter and Paul the
position in New Orleans
did not come to pass.
More than his distinct
African dialect, Fr.
Ignatius is best
characterized by his
story-like telling of the
gospel, mixed with
humorous anecdotes that
the eager-to-listen
congregation find relative
and intriguing. It is this
style, this candor, and
this appeal that has made
Father a favorite at Ss.
Peter and Paul.
If the story is in the
telling, then none can tell
it better than Ndibalema,
who helps us all
‘‘overcome” the
oftentimes hard to grasp
gospel messages and we
thank you Father.

parishioner at Ss. Peter and
Paul Church in Decatur.)

Corpus Christi u Walks-Thru”The Bible
BY RON SCHUESSLER
On Saturday, March 14,
the Corpus Christi parish
family in Stone Mountain
will sponsor a “New
Testament Walk Thru The
Bible.” Registration begins
at 8 a.m. The actual
session lasts from 9 a.m. to
4 p.m. Lunch will be
provided by Corpus
Christi. The New
Testament “Walk” is held
during the early Lenten
season to aid in our
preparation for the Easter
Feast.
Over 200 people
attended the ‘‘Old
Testament Walk Thru” at
Corpus Christi on Dec. 6,
and responded
enthusiastically to the day.
“The Old Testament truly
came alive to us during
this fun day,” one Corpus
Christi couple said. “We
now know the key names,
places and events of the
Old Testament in the
sequence they actually
happened. This has given
us a new and awakened
appreciation for our Old
Testament heritage and
has sparked further study
into the Old Testament.”
A nother family, with
three teen-aged boys,
recommended the day as a
family event, saying it was
“informative, inspiring and
fun-filled for all five of
us.”
It is not necessary to
have attended the Old
Testament Walk Thru to
attend the New Testament
session. Although the same
teaching techniques will be
used, the content of each
stands alone. The key to
the teaching technique is
memory stimulation
through personal
involvement of all
attending; a series of key
p hrases and coordinated
hand signals are used while
each person actually walks
through the major
seciptural events. There is
no note-taking or
discussion groups - simply
learning in a fun-filled,
pressureless manner.
At the end of this day,
you will have learned to
walk and talk your way
through the land of the
New Testament; learned to
outline from memory the
major messages of the
Gospel; learned to “Walk
Thru” the key events of
the Old Testament;
learned to recall from
memory the major themes
of each Epistle;
encountered and been
challenged by some of the
major themes from the
entire New Testament;
once again been touched
with the Good News of
the Gospel and God’s plan
for your life.
The “Walk Thru” is
presented by Walk Thru
the Bible Seminars of
Smyrna, whose
experienced staff of over
30 people have presented
almost 1,300 seminars
since its inception in 1974.
They will present more
than 500 seminars in
1981, with a waiting list of
over one year.
Father Tom Kenney,
Corpus Christi pastor, said
he was amazed at the first
“Walk Thru,” watching
“the fun our people had
and the dynamic teaching
skills used by the people
who conducted the
Seminar.”
“It is such a pleasant
way to learn - painless!
The Lord was truly alive in
the people at the seminar.
The exchanges and
i n teraction between our
Christian Catholics and
other Christians who
attended was really
beautiful to see,” he said.
“Please join us for our
New Testament Walk
Thru. I guarantee you will
enjoy it.”

TURIN, Italy (NC) -
The Shroud of Turin,
believed by many to be
the burial shroud for
Christ’s body, shows traces
of blood and ancient
burial spices, according to
a new scientific report.
The report, presented
by shroud investigator
Luigi Balma Bollone to
Cardinal Anastasio
Ballestrero of Turin, said
that some shroud threads
showed crystalline ferrous
and ferric oxide traces of
biological origin.
These had a structure
corresponding to that
found in hemoglobin, a
component of blood, and
could be identified as
coming from blood, the
scientist said.
His report said that the
blood-related traces
appeared only in those
examined threads that
were drawn from areas of
the cloth which, before
they were pulled out and
examined, were considered
portions that had blood
spots. Examined threads
from other areas of the
shroud did not have these
traces, the report added.
Bollone said that, in
addition, the blood traces
were mixed with deposits
of aloes and myrrh, - the
spices mentioned in the
Gospel accounts of Jesus’
burial.
He said it was beyond
the realm of scientific
investigation to state with
certainty that the shroud
was used to wrap Jesus’
body.
Science could only
corroborate or disprove
correlations between the
Shroud of Turin and the
Gospel accounts of Jesus’
death and burial, not
provide absolutely
conclusive evidence, he
said.

Boll one’s report was
based on investigations of
24 small threads from the
shroud which a team of
scientists was allowed to
extract in 1978 and
su bject to various
scientific tests, including
spectographic analysis.
The Shroud of Turin,
14 feet, 3 inches long and
3 feet, 7 inches wide,
shows a negative image of
a man with indications of
wounds on the head,
hands, feet and side that
correspond to the crown
of thorns and nail and
spear wounds which the
Gospel accounts say Jesus
suffered in his crucifixion.
It has been the object
of considerable scientific
investigation and debate,
particularly since 1898
when scientist Secundo Pia
photographed it for the
first time. In using the
newly-developed
photographic process, Pia
discovered that the
photographic negatives of
the shroud showed a
positive human image.
For many, the negative
reversal of the image on
the shroud, the history of
which can be documented
to the 14th century, long
before photography
existed, is the most
convincing argument
against the theory of an
elaborate medieval
devotional fraud.
