EASTER DINNER -
Substitute a potluck picnic
for that big meal on Easter
Sunday. Gather with
friends at a park, lake or
backyard. Share food,
hunt eggs, play ball, sing
some songs.
EASTER BASKETS - If
your family likes to
decorate eggs, teach them
about the “new life”
symbolism of the Easter
egg: the Resurrection of
Jesus and our call to new
life in Him. Fill Easter
baskets with seeds and
plants and make a
celebration out of starting
a garden or seed flats.
FOOT WASHING - If
you have a Lenten or
Easter gathering, include a
footwashing as part of the
festivities, following the
Last Supper example of
Jesus. This is a good ritual
demonstration of humility
and love for others.
NEW THINGS - Since
spring is a time of new life
and new growth, introduce
a friend or family member
to something new. Teach
someone to sprout seeds
for eating. Loan some of
your favorite books. Plant
vegetables or flowers for a
friend who can’t do it.
EASTER CARDS -
Make your own, using
scraps of paper and a little
creativity. Share the task
with others. Money
diverted from commercial
cards could be put into a
social action project.

Stone Soup
The story of the wandering minstrel who taught
people how to share during a famine might be the
start of a Lenten tradition for an enterprising
church or family group.
During the early part of Lent, plan a time of
hunger awareness when church members cut back
on normal eating habits and eat more meatless
meals. A young people’s “fastathon” might be
scheduled for teens. Set aside money saved by
eating frugal meals for a church hunger fund, to be
used for the needy.
The week before Palm Sunday, bring gifts of
money, canned goods or staples garnered for the
church hunger fund to a church service. Serve a
“stone soup” lunch for the congregation following
the service.
Fixings for the stone soup are brought by church
members as they come to the service. Vegetables,
spices, soup bones, etc. are placed in a big soup pot
that is started early that morning. Children can help
to cut up the vegetables. Everything should simmer
while the church service is being conducted.
Enjoy the soup with homemade bread baked by
church members and donate money saved by
sharing a simple communal meal to the church
hunger fund. Be sure to re-tell the story of the stone
soup tradition or have a filmstrip highlighting
hunger during or after the meal.

CHRISTIAN SEDER -
The Jewish feast of
Passover is integrally
linked to our Easter
celebration. Hold a
Christian seder supper
with family and/or friends.

statements he was making concerning human
rights in Brazil could get him thrown out of the

U.S.C.C. Joins Groups
Criticizing Budget Plan
WASHINGTON (NC) - The U.S. Catholic Conference
joined some 140 other organizations Feb. 27 in criticizing
the Reagan administration’s proposed budget cuts and tax
proposals. In a joint statement the groups said the
proposals benefited the rich and would create unfair
hardships on the middle class and poor.
“We believe that this nation can find solutions to the
problems of high inflation, high interest rates, high energy
costs and high unemployment which will not create unfair
hardship on any one group of Americans,” the
organizations remarked in announcing formation of a
national coalition on the federal budget.
The coalition was organized by the AFL-CIO. The
statement was read at a Washington news conference by
the AFL-CIO’s president, Lane Kirkland.
The USCC is the public policy agency for the U.S.
bishops. It was represented at the press conference by
Msgr. George Higgins, former USCC secretary for special
concerns who retired last year after 36 years with the
bishops’ conference.
Also joining in the statement were the National
Catholic Conference for Interracial Justice and Network, a
Catholic social justice lobby.
While agreeing that inflation and joblessness are serious
problems for the nation, the statement argued that the
Reagan administration proposals “will not make America
healthier and, instead, could make America weaker.”
“We believe that something is basically wrong when
programs assisting hard-pressed, moderate-income working
Americans and those living at or under the federal poverty
level - but who presumably are not ‘truly needy’ - are
decimated or destroyed to finance individual tax cuts
benefiting primarily the top 20 percent of taxpayers,” the
statement remarked.

the Church takes into
account both the special
activity of God and the
contribution of the human
author. As we have seen in
the story of creation, God
provides the message that
He alone is the source of
all creation. The author in
chapter one expresses this
insight in a very lofty and
beautifully poetic account
of that creation. The
author in chapter two, on
the other hand, presents
God’s creative activity in a
homey, down-to-earth
story that shows God’s
closeness to and care for
His creation.
This approach is
significant because it
allows us to distinguish
between what God wants
to say and how the author
says it. For fundamental
ists, the “what” and the
“how” are the same. The
God who gives the message
also dictates how it is
given. But because we, as
Catholics, distinguish
between what God says
and how the inspired
author says it, we can
focus more clearly on the
essential message of the
Scriptures. The Catholic
C O^G* V
EA-
f° r ' ..."
Church in the documents
of Vatican II stated it this
way:
“Therefore, since
everything asserted by the
inspired authors or sacred
writers must be held to be
asserted by the Holy
Spirit, it follows that the
books of Scripture must
be acknowledged as
teaching firmly, faithfully,
and without error that
truth which God wanted
put into the sacred
writings for the sake of
our salvation.” (Dogmatic
Constitution On Divine
Revelation, No. 11).
It is the work of the
Holy Spirit both to inspire
the human author to write
(2Pt. 1:30-21) and to
safeguard the truthfulness
of the message which He
wishes to convey. This
same Holy Spirit gives
birth to the Church at
Pentecost and it is within
that community that we
are to look for signs of His
presence still. We would
not be surprised then to
hear the voice of the Holy
Spirit speaking to us
through the teaching
authority of the Church
(Jn 16:13; Mt 16: 17-19).
Through the work of the
Holy Spirit, the Lord Jesus
is present to His people,
even to this day. God’s
activity does not end on
the last page of the Bible:
He continues to work in
our midst for our
salvation. For example,
just as He sent Jesus to
free us from sin, so we
continue to experience
salvation from sin through
the Sacrament of Penance:
God working through the
ministry of the Church
that we might be saved (Jn
20: 22-23).
Because God continues
to work for our salvation
in and through the
Church, we best
understand His saving
Word in the Church
community. When we
speak of God working in
the Church we are into
what we call “Tradition.”
Very simply, Tradition is
the lived and living
experience of God in our
midst. Tradition is the way
Christians throughout the
centuries, guided by the
Spirit, have continued to
experience the saving work
of Jesus. The Second
Vatican Council expressed
it this way:
“To the successors of

the apostles, sacred
tradition hands on in its
full purity God’s word,
which was entrusted to the
apostles by Christ the
Lord and the Holy Spirit.
Thus, led by- the light of
the Spirit of truth, these
successors can in their
preaching preserve this
word of God faithfully,
explain it, and make it
more widely known.
Consequently, it is not
from sacred Scripture
alone that the Church
draws her certainty about
everything which has been
revealed. Therefore both
sacred tradition and sacred
Scripture are to be
accepted and venerated
with the same sense of
devotion and reverence.”
(Constitution on Divine
Revelation, No. 9)
Scripture and Tradition
form one source of God’s
gift of Himself to us. A
Catholic will read the
Scriptures mindful of the
Tradition of the Church to
which he or she belongs. It
is within that community
of faith that each person
comes to an experience of
the Lord. And this Lord
has spoken to us through
the Tradition of the
Church just as He has
through His Holy Word.
These two sources of
God’s revelation --
Scripture and Tradition -
are to be taken together if
the meaning of either is to
be free from distortion.
And we can be certain of
both. From Scripture, for
example, we can maintain
belief in the death,
resurrection and ascension
of Jesus; from Tradition,
we can maintain belief in
the Assumption of the
Blessed Virgin Mary into
heaven.
In summary, the
Catholic heritage of
Scripture holds that:
1. The Bible is the
inspired Word of God in
that it is written by a
human author under the
special influence of God;
2. The Bible “must be
acknowledged as teaching
firmly, faithfully, and
without error that truth
which God wanted put
into the sacred writings for
the sake of our salvation”
(Dogmatic Constitution on
Divine Revelation, No. 11);
3. Tradition is our
on-going lived and living
experience of Jesus in our
midst;
4. Scripture and
Tradition, taken together,
make up the one gift of
God’s self-revelation to us.
The goal of our study
of Scripture is never
simply to know more
about the Bible. Our goal
is always to come to a
deeper experience of God
who saves us and to show
our gratitude to Him by
the love and service we
extend to our brothers and
sisters. This, in turn, we do
within the context of our
family of faith in the
Catholic Church.
