Modern Miracle:
Multiplication Of Fish
PHILADELPHIA (NC) - Hungry Poles will
soon experience a modern miracle of benefaction
-- a multiplication of fishes - in the form of 40
million fishcakes, 5 million more than the
population of the country.
The Archdiocese of Philadelphia is sending the
fish, valued at approximately $9 million, to assist
the needy in Poland. In 1980 Poland experienced
serious summer floods that curtailed the potato
and wheat crops, including grain for livestock.

St. Teresa Of Avila
For Non-Believers Upgraded
Had Jewish Ancestry
WASHINGTON (NC) -
St. Teresa of Avila, the
16th-century Spanish
mystic and reformer of the
Carmelite Order, who is
one of two women
honored as a doctor of the
church, was of Jewish
ancestry, research by
Spanish historians has
shown.
That research, summed
up by Discalced Carmelite
Father Teofanes Egido,
professor of history at the
State University of
Valladolid, Spain, has also
shown that St. Teresa,
while aware of her
ancestry, did not publicly
acknowledge it because of
the prejudice in Spain at
that time against Jews and
Jewish converts to
Catholicism.
She did, however,
direct that her convents
not comply with the
“statutes of purity of
blood,” which excluded
Jewish converts to
Catholicism from most
religious orders, from the
military, from higher
education, and from
holding civil and church
offices.
Father Egido’s article,
“The Historical Setting of
St. Teresa’s Life,” has
been published in the
current issue of Carmelite
Studies, an annual
publication of the
Institute of Carmelite
Studies in Washington.
The “statutes of purity
of blood” were designed
to distinguish between
“old Christians,” whose
ancestors on both sides
had been Christians for
centuries, and
“Judeoconversos,” Jews
who were forced to
convert to Christianity in
order to avoid expulsion
from Spain, or
“reconciliados,” persons
formally reconciled to the
church after conviction of
returning to the practices
of their former religion.
The statutes also
applied to the more
exceptional cases of mixed
Moorish ancestry, Father
Egido said. The Moors, a
North African people of
mixed Arab and Berber
ancestry, extended the
Islamic conquest to Spain
in the eighth century, and
were driven out in the
15th century by the forces
of the Catholic royalty.
Father Egido said that
in 1944, Alonso Cortes, a
Spanish historian,
uncovered a 16th-century
lawsuit in which testimony
revealed that St. Teresa’s
father and grandfather
were of Jewish extraction
and had been reconciled
by the Toledo branch of
the Inquisition, a church
court for dealing with
heretics, and had done
public penance in 1485.
St. Teresa’s grandfather
was Juan Sanchez, a silk
merchant in Toledo,
whose children adopted
his wife’s family name,
Cepeda, which was
common among “old
Christians.” Sanchez
moved from Toledo,
where his Jewish lineage
was known, to Avila, and
bought a certificate
making him a “hidalgo,”
or aristocrat of the lowest
rank. Hidalgos were
exempt from taxation and
were eligible for civil and
church positions closed to
those of mixed blood.
One of the sons of Juan
Sanchez, Alonso Sanchez
de Cepeda, or Alonso de
Cepeda, as he called
himself, married Beatriz de
Ahumada, the daughter of
an “old Christian” family
of the lower nobility. One
of the 10 children of
Alonso and Beatriz was
Teresa, the future saint,
born in 1515.
VATICAN CITY (NC) -- In an apparent move
to upgrade the status of the Vatican agency which
promotes dialogue with atheists, Pope John Paul
II named four cardinals to the Secretariat for
Non-Believers March 5.
The appointment of Cardinals William Baum,
Agostino Casaroli, Paolo Bertoli and Franciszek
Macharski nearly doubled the number of
cardinal-members of the secretariat, taking the
total from five to nine.
Chilean Torture Cited
LONDON (NC) -- Auxiliary Bishop Christopher
Butler of Westminster, England, was one of four
religious leaders who March 11 delivered to the
Chilean embassy in London a petition signed by
more than 100,000 people saying Chilean security
forces use torture and calling on the Chilean
government to end the practice immediately.
The petition, organized by the British section
of Amnesty International, an organization
monitoring human rights worldwide, was timed to
coincide with the inauguration of the new Chilean
Constitution.

In an address March 12
to the executive
committee of the
Synagogue Council of
America, the NCCB
president, Archbishop
John R. Roach of St. Paul
and Minneapolis, Minn.,
said: “Today, through
dialogue, Christians are
coming to realize that
many of our previous
assumptions about the
nature of Judaism were, to
put it kindly, wrong. Thus,
we tended to cast what
“Nostra Aetate” (the
Second Vatican Council’s
“Declaration on the
Relationship of the
Church to Non-Christian
Religions”) called ‘the
spiritual legacy of Israel
for the church’ almost
exclusively in negative
terms, deeming that legacy
a past reality abrogated by
the coming of Christ and
superseded by the
Christian dispensation.
“That such a view
impoverishes Christianity
as well as doing injustice
to the integrity of Judaism
is now increasingly
recognized in our
community,” the
archbishop said, referring
to the NCCB Statement on
Catholic-Jewish Relations
of Nov. 20, 1975. He
noted that Pope John Paul

II, in speaking to the
Jewish community in
Germany last fall,
“specifically interpreted
‘Nostra Aetate’ as calling
for an appreciation of
Judaism as ‘a living legacy
that must be understood
and treasured’ by
Christians ‘in its
profundity and richness.’”
In that statement in
Germany the pope
discerned “three essential
and interrelated
dimensions in the
dialogue,” said Archbishop
Roach, who went on to
apply those dimensions to
the United States.
From the perspective of
the common origins of the
two religious communities
and of Christianity’s roots
in Judaism, the archbishop
said, “the pope sees
today’s dialogue as ‘the
meeting between the
people of God of the old
covenant, never retracted
by God on the one hand,
and the people of the new
covenant on the other.’”
The archbishop noted
that the phrase, “never
retracted by God,” “at
once rebuts all old claims

(the so-called ‘teaching of

the way for an entirely
new relationship between
two living traditions on
the basis of mutual respect
for each other’s essential
religious claims.
‘‘Obviously,’’
Archbishop Roach said,
“this formulation does not
answer ail our questions
about each other or,
frankly, about ourselves.”
Secondly, the pope
stressed “the church’s
acceptance of the
continuing and permanent
election of the Jewish
people,” the archbishop
said. “Such a notion calls
for Christian appreciation
of Judaism’s own
self-definition and for an
awareness that the church
has a very real stake in the
survival and prosperity of
the Jewish people today.”
The third dimension of
dialogue suggested by the
pope, Archbishop Roach
said, is joint action for
peace and justice in the
world.
