Pentecostes
Maria.

Byzantine Catholics Break
Ground In Roswell
Groundbreaking ceremonies for Epiphany
Byzantine Catholic Church were held at the site of
the new church on Old Alabama Road in Roswell.
In attendance were Archbishop Thomas A.
Donnellan of Atlanta, Bishop Michael Dudick of
Passaic, New Jersey, Father Philip Scott, pastor of
Epiphany parish, other members of the clergy,
parishioners and guests.
Mass was celebrated by Bishop Dudick, and
Archbishop Donnellan addressed the
congregation.
The church, expected to be completed this fall,
will be the first Byzantine Catholic church in
Georgia and will serve the spiritual needs of
Byzantine Catholics in Georgia and South
Carolina.
Designed by the architectural firm of Barker
and Cunningham, the church will exhibit styling
features reminiscent of eastern Europe. These
traditional features have been incorporated into a
building that is both unique and functional. This
European styling is represented by only two other
churches in the entire United States.
Following the ceremonies, a reception was
held at the Hilton Inn at Tucker.
ARCHBISHOP THOMAS A. DONNELLAN

Catholic Church as Bishop Michael Dudick of

The new church is expected to be completed this
fall and will be located on Old Alabama Road in

The Catholics in Action Players of Our Lady of the
Assumption Church will present Eugene O’Neill’s “Ah,.
Wilderness” on June 12 and 13 in the parish hall at 8 p.m;
Under the direction of Cathy Brown, the show stars Bill
Robins as Nat Miller, Kevin McGreevy as his lovesick son,
Richard, and John Evan as Uncle Sid, the loveable black
sheep of the Miller family.
Set in a small Connecticut town in the twenties, this
delightful comedy centers on the joys and perils of young
love. Unlike much of O’Neill’s work which often presents a
brooding and psychological approach to life, this play is a
remembrance of his own youth and is warm, nostalgic and
tender in its treatment of ordinary people. It is funny and
yet most sensitive to the sweetness of home and family life.
A dinner theatre is planned for Saturday evening
featuring an old-fashioned Fourth of July picnic in keeping
with the mood and action of the play. Dinner reservations
are limited and must be made by June 7. Dinner theatre
tickets are priced at $6 per adult and $4 per student, with a
special family ticket for six priced at only $20. Performance
only tickets for both Friday and Saturday nights are priced
at $3 per adult and $2 per student. A special family ticket is
available for either performance and is priced at $10. For
ticket information call 457-2769 or 455-7025.
Our Lady of the Assumption is located near Oglethorpe

Mary Lou Williams, a
jazz pianist, arranger and
composer who wrote three
Masses, died of cancer May
28 at her home in Durham,
N.C. She was 71 years old.
A jazz great who
contributed to various
types of that music during a
career that began in the late
1920s, Miss Williams
helped create the Kansas
City swing era with its
“swinging left hand” sound
that spun off into boogie
woogie and exploded into
bop and the big band
sounds of the 1940s.
She composed or played
for such musical greats as
Duke Ellington, Benny
Goodman, Louis
Armstrong, Earl Hines and
Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey
and Cab Calloway.
Her third Mass, now
known as “Mary Lou’s
Mass,” was commissioned
in 1969 by Msgr. Joseph
G remillion, director of
social and ecumenical
ministry for the Diocese of
Alexandria-Shreveport,
La., who was then secretary
of the Pontifical Justice
and Peace Commission,
after Miss Williams had had
a private audience with
Pope Paul VI.

Fatima
ON MAY 13, 1917, THE MOTHER OF GOD
APPEARED, FOR THE FIRST TIME TO THREE
CHILDREN AT FATIMA, PORTUGAL.
ON MAY 13, 1981, THE 64th ANNIVERSARY
OF THE FIRST FATIMA APPARITION, POPE
JOHN PAUL II WAS SHOT AND SERIOUSLY
WOUNDED BY A TERRORIST.
The Blessed Mother’s message, in part, during her
appearances at Fatima was:
“You have seen hell where the souls of poor
sinners go. To save them, God wishes to establish in
the world devotion to my Immaculate Heart. If what I
say to you is done, many souls will be saved and there
will be peace. The war is going to end; but if people do
not cease offending Cod, a worse one will break out
during the pontificate of Pius XL When you see a
night illumined by an unknown light, know that this
is the great sign given you by God that he is about to
punish the world for its crimes, by means of war,
famine, and persecutions of the Church and of the
Holy Father.
To prevent this, I shall come to ask for the
consecration of Russia to my Immaculate Heart, and
the Communion of Reparation on the First
Saturdays. If my requests are heeded, Russia will be
converted, and there will be peace; if not, she will
spread her errors throughout the world, causing wars
and persecutions of the Church. The good will be
martyred, the Holy Father will have much to suffer,
various nations will be annihilated. In the end, my
Immaculate Heart will trimph. The Holy Father will
consecrate Russia to me, and she will be converted,
and a period of peace will be granted to the
world ...” 1

Originally called “Music
for Peace,” the Mass was
first performed at a service
in honor of Tom Mboya,
the Kenyan leader
assassinated in 1969.
Sung in St. Patrick’s
Cathedral in New York
City in 1975, “Mary Lou’s
Mass” was the first jazz
performance given there. It
has also been sung at the
Church of the Gesu, the
mother church of the
Jesuits, in Rome and at
many other churches in the
United States.
In an interview after its
performance at St. Basil’s
Church in Toronto,
Canada, in 1972, Miss
Williams, a convert to
Catholicism, said she wrote
the music for the Mass
because “Jesus is the best.”
She added, “I just wanted
to spread a little love.”
She said there was no
difference between the
music of the Mass and the
music she played in night
clubs. “The lyrics are just
different,” she explained.
“All jazz has its roots in
spirituals,” she said. “The
slaves were constantly
calling on Jesus to help
them. Everything in life
had a purpose for God.
They also had a great
devotion to the Blessed
Virgin.”
Mary Lou Williams was
born Mary Elfrieda Scruggs
in Atlanta, Ga., on May 8,
1910. She was one of eight
children. Her father left the
family when she was small
and her mother supported
the children by doing
housework.
Her mother played the
organ and most of her five
sisters and two brothers
were musically talented.
A self-taught pianist,
Miss Williams, by the time
she was six or seven, was
making the rounds of
friends’ and relatives’
homes to play for quarters
or half-dollars.
The family had moved
to Pittsburgh by then and
the principal of Lincoln
elementary school there
tried to cultivate Miss
Williams’ interest in the
classics by taking her to the
opera and providing
opportunities to play light
classical pieces at the
Carnegie Institute of
Technology.
By the time she was a
student at Pittsburgh’s
Westinghouse High School,
music took up more and
more of her time. She
recalled later that she
received a check for $100
for playing the piano at a
party given by the Mellon
family.
Leaving high school
during her first year, she
joined the vaudeville team
of Seymour and Jeanette.
There she met saxophonist
John Williams, whom she
married when she was 16.
The marriage ended in
divorce a few years later.
She later married Harold
Baker, a trumpet player
with the Kirk band and
with Duke Ellington. Baker
died in 1966.
During a tour of Europe
in 1954, Miss Williams
underwent a conversion
experience. Distressed by
what she saw as “greed,
selfishness and envy”
around her, she arose from
the piano one evening as
she was playing in a Paris
nightclub, walked out of
the club and left the world
of music for three years.
Returning to New York
City, she spent most of that
period praying and
meditating in Our Lady of
Lourdes Church at West
142nd Street and
Amsterdam Avenue, near
her apartment. Raised as a
Baptist, she chose that
church because it was the
only one she could find
open at any time of day.
In 1957, she converted
to Catholicism and that
year, at the urging of Dizzy
Gillespie and two priests,
Fathers John F. Crowley
and Anthony Woods, she
came out of seclusion and
resumed her musical career.
Funeral services were
scheduled for June 1 at St.
Ignatius Loyola Church,
New York and June 2 at the
Church of St. Peter and
Paul, Pittsburgh.
