An archdiocesan
celebration of Mass at the
Cathedral of Christ the
King will be held on
Pentecost Sunday
afternoon, June 7, at 3 p.m.
This will conclude those
ceremonies in which
catechumens and
candidates from
throughout the archdiocese
have been received into the
church. During Mass,
Archbishop Donnellan will
present a gift to each new
Catholic symbolizing the
universal Church and the
welcome of the new
Catholics into fellowship
with the Archdiocesan
community.

NEWS VIEW
ENRICHMENT DAYS for 150
people involved in adult education,
youth ministry and religious
education in parishes were held at
the Catholic Center in Atlanta May
20-22. Sponsored by the Office of
Religious Education of the
Archdiocese, and Father James
Kelly and his staff, the workshops
attracted representatives from over
75 percent of the parishes in the
Archdiocese. Above, William
Reedy, director of catechetics for
Sadlier Publications, presents a
workshop on the new Rite of
Christian Initiation for adults, and
the implications for those working
in catechesis. Below, a running
discussion among, left to right,
Sister Linda Maser of Our Lady of
Lourdes, Father Richard
La Madeleine and Rose Herold of
Blessed Sacrament and William
Lakin of St. Joseph’s in Athens.

Archbishop Hickey: Innovator In Washington
WASHINGTON (NC) -
Archbishop James A.
Hickey of Washington is
selling his residence in an
upper middle class
Washington neighborhood
and moving to a new
pastoral center in a former
seminary in a working class
section of the city.
Archbishop Hickey,
who succeeded Cardinal
William Baum as head of
the Washington
Archdiocese last year, also
announced the
appointment of six
archdiocesan administrat
ors in a major reorganizat
ion of the archdiocesan
administration. Two of the
six new administrators are
women, a nun and a black
lay woman.
Located on a 16-acre
site purchased from the
Oblates of St. Francis de
Sales for $2.15 million, the
new pastoral center will
house all archdiocesan
administrative offices; the
offices of the Catholic
Standard, the archdiocesan
newspaper; and the
archbishop’s residence.
Archdiocesan service
agencies are to remain at
their present locations.
The archdiocese will pay
for the site, on which St.
Francis de Sales Seminary
was located, by selling the
present archbishop’s
residence, bought in 1976
for $210,000, and the
Catholic Standard building
in downtown Washington.
The balance of $750,000

meetings, a dining hall and
kitchen and a chapel. It has
50,000 square feet of office
space. One wing of the
building will be used for the
archbishop’s residence.
The move from the
present chancery building
on Rhode Island Avenue in
downtown Washington
near St. Matthew’s
Cathedral to the new
location is to begin on Aug.
1 and the archbishop plans
to take up residence there
in the fall.
A diocesan spokesman
said the archdiocese will
retain ownership of the
present chancery building,
a more expensive property
site, which will be
developed.
The new archdiocesan
administrators include:

secretary for Catholic

doctorate in guidance from
the Catholic University of
America, Ms. Cole is
associate professor of
education at Bowie State
College.

Culbert of the Sisters of St.

secular institutes. Holder of
a master’s degree in
religious studies from the
Catholic University of
America, Sister Culbert has
been associate vicar general
for Religious in the
archdiocese since 1977.
- John Carr, secretary
for social concerns. Carr,
now community affairs
specialist for the Center for
Community Change, which
works with community
organizations in low
income areas on housing,
employment and other
issues, was executive
director of the White House

Faith, Fiddles
And Traditions
The Annual Leadership Conference for the
Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women will be held June
18 at the Church of the Transfiguration in Marietta.
The conference, entitled “Faith, Fiddles and
Traditions,” will focus on Catholic faith traditions and the
importance of sharing that faith with the larger world
community.
The day will begin with coffee and registration at 9 a.m.
Father Ray Horan, former Transfiguration pastor now at
SS. Peter and Paul Church, will deliver the keynote address
at 9:45 a.m.
Following an address by Joy Russ, the ACCW
Commission Workshops will begin. “The Importance of
Tradition in the Family,” “Sharing Your Faith in the
Community,” “Reaching Out in Faith to the World
Family,” “Government Doesn’t Have to be a Riddle,” “The
Tradition of Women in the Church,” and “Composing the
Score” are the workshops that will be offered to those in
attendance.
A liturgy followed by lunch will begin at 12:15. The day
will end at 2 p.m. after parish representatives to ACCW have
been acknowledged.
Cost for the day’s activities is $5, which covers
registration and lunch. Registrations may be sent to Betty

All women of the archdiocese are automatically
members of the Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women
and are cordially invited to attend the conference.
