Around The Archdiocese
Carl Vinson Remembered
When the late Carl Vinson moved from
Washington, D.C. back to his home town of
Milledgeville, Georgia, his long-time nurse
and companion, Molly Snead, began
attending daily Mass at Milledgeville’s
historic Sacred Heart Church on Jefferson
Street.
The Sunday after Carl Vinson’s death,
Sacred Heart’s altar was bedecked with
lovely red roses from Vinson’s funeral
arrangements.
The vibrant red of the roses - a fitting
color for Pentecost Sunday - blended with
large white magnolias from Vinson’s garden.
Sacred Heart parishioners and pastor Father
Joseph Drohan had Ms. Snead to thank for
this special tribute to an old and dear friend.
Tapestry Arrives
A Canadian artist’s tapestry of the
Resurrection, which will serve as a backdrop
to the altar, arrived at St. Oliver Plunkett
parish in Snellville amidst final preparations
for the church dedication. The 12-foot by
five-foot tapestry is worked in earth tones of
red and gold.
The new church is set in a wooded area,
and constructed of cedarwood and stone.
Men of the parish have constructed the altar
furnishings, and over 100 people turned out
Saturday, June 6 to clean and landscape the
site before the dedication, Sunday, June 21.
Among those expected for the 11 a.m.
Liturgy of Dedication, which will be
celebrated by Archbishop Thomas
Donnellan, are pastor, Father Terence
Kane’s mother, Mrs. Mary Ellen Kane, and
sister, Lucy, who are coming from the home
of St. Oliver Plunkett - Drogheda, Ireland.
Fr. Holohan’s 25th!
Father Joseph Holohan, O.F.M., Catholic chaplain at the
University of Georgia in Athens, marked the 25th
anniversary pf his ordination to the priesthood with a gala
celebration this Pentecost Sunday.
Beginning with a liturgy at the Catholic Center in Athens
at 11 a.m., past and present students and friends who had
grown to cherish the friendship and counsel of Father Joe
gathered for the day. Special surprise guests were old friends
Father Bob Menard, O.F.M. and Father Neil O’Connell,
O.F.M. who came in for the occasion. Both priests were
former campus ministers at UGA.
A community picnic in a nearby park continued the
celebration, and Father Joe was presented with a scrapbook
filled with pictures and memorabilia from over the years.
According to Marguerite Holmes, secretary at the
Catholic Center, who, with Father Gary Kolarcik, O.F.M.
was in charge of contacting people about the special day,
“the response was overwhelming!”
Father Joe leaves June 22 to spend three weeks in Rome
and one week in Ireland with some of his former classmates.
He will return to the University of Georgia this September.

Letters From The Children
This past year, seventh
graders in Gertrude O Weill’s
religion class at Holy Cross
Church in Chamhlee gave
some thought to what they
would write in a letter to
Jesus.
The results were printed in
a folder and distributed to
each student as a
remembrance of their year
together.
The following letters were
among those included in the
class folder
Dear Jesus,
I had to write to you
that I really had fun in the
green grass. I love the
gentle rain you gave me
even though I know you
sent it so that the plants
would grow.
When the sun sets
tonight, we will talk.
Every morning, when the
sun rises, I will remember
you then and all day and
forever, because you are
my friend. Yes, Jesus, you
are my best friend.
Steven Lunsford
Dear Jesus,
I want to thank you
for the many, many gifts
you have given me. I
thank you for giving me
the feeling that when I
have a problem, I can talk
with you about it. I love
your gifts -- the sun, the
flowers, the trees, and
more than any of these,
my family. Most of all, I
enjoy the greatest gift you
have given me - yourself.
Thank you, Jesus, for
listening to me.
Amy McCrory
Dear Jesus,
You gave me shelter
when I needed it. Most of
all, you gave me your
strength and your love
and your courage when I
was upset and needed
your help. You are my
best friend.
John Meier
Dear Jesus,
I like the way you
forgive people like us.
Some people do not
understand what
forgiveness means and
what it does for us. It
means that we are able to
join God’s family. Sortie
never bother to take the
time to think about you.
They are always too busy
doing something else.
Thank you, Jesus, for all
you have done for us.

Bernardin: “New Synthesis” Needed
CINCINNATI (NC) «
Archbishop Joseph L.
Bemardin of Cincinnati
urged members of the
Catholic Theological
Society of America (GTSA)
to use their talents to
confront challenges facing
the church today.
About 300 members of
the theological society,
mostly teachers in
universities and seminaries,
met June 10-13 in
Cincinnati.
The archbishop
expressed fear that “much
of our Catholic teaching
and discipline has become
disconnected in the minds
of many people from the
objective realities from
which they flow and which
give them their meaning.
“What is needed,” he
said, “is a new synthesis of
Christian teaching which
will be understandable,
credible and, indeed,
appealing to the people of
, today.” He called for a
renewal of Christian ethics
which would incorporate
“the best of the ‘old’ and
the ‘new.’”
Much discussion at the
meeting centered on the
theme of the “local
church,’’ which
Archbishop Bernardin
defined as the diocese, “the
community of believers in a
particular locality gathered
around its bishop.”
Speaking as “a pastor of
a local church,” he also
called on the theologians to
assist with issues such as a
deeper understanding of
the sacrament of
reconciliation and the
development of a more
positive theology of
sexuality.
In his keynote address a
Scripture scholar, Father
Raymond Brown, said the
term “local church” is used
in the New Testament not
only to express the oneness
of the thurch of Jesus but
also refers to the variety of
individual churches which
differed significantly
according to locality.
Father Philip Mumion,
director of the Parish
Project in New York, told
CTSA members that the
Catholic Church is “at a
time of extraordinary
vitality” in the United
States and spoke of the
“great freedom” for
theological and pastoral
initiative and the
flourishing of ministry.
But he also listed
challenges before the
church today, including the
need for better defined
norms, the need to address

the problem of alienation
from church teaching, the
need to clarify the place of
women in the church, the
need to address the “great
erosion” in church
discipline, the need to
address ‘‘seriously
neglected” pastoral issues
such as the quality of
preaching and the need to
address the growing gap
between poor and Hispanic
Catholics and middle class
Catholics.
The convention theme
of the local church, with
particular focus on the
Hispanic experience, was
also explored in two
sessions on basic Christian
communities.
Reflective of the Latin
American church, where
clergymen are in short
supply, the basic Christian
community is flourishing
among Hispanics in the
United States, said Father
Virgilio Elizondo of the
Mexican-American
Cultural Center, who
described these
communities as more
mystical in style, more
spontaneous and more
charismatic than
traditional parishes in the
United States.
He urged the
theologians to help enrich
the dialogue between
Hispanic and English-
speakers’ styles of worship.
The Hispanic community is
primarily made up of the
poor and uneducated and if
God has a special place for
the poor, perhaps they have
priviledged images of God --
images which, he said, can
help Americans to discover
God in a new way.
