Vatican Addresses
WASHINGTON (NC) -
The Vatican is concerned
that some articles and
columns in U.S. Catholic
newspapers “cause harm to
the faith of the people
because of lack of respect
for the teaching authority
of the church.”
The concern was
expressed in a letter sent to
U.S. bishops by
Archbishop Pio Laghi,
apostolic delegate in the
United States.
There are 162 Catholic
newspapers published in
the United States, most of
which are diocesan
weeklies having the local
bishop as publisher.
Archbishop Laghi’s
letter said:
“With increasing
frequency the Holy See
receives letters from the
United States complaining
about articles appearing in
Catholic newspapers,
including diocesan
publications, which cause
harm to the faith of the
people because of lack of
respect for the teaching and
decisions of the
magisterium. As you know,
it is not unusual for such
articles to contain
criticisms and attacks even
on the teaching authority
and the person of the holy
father. The impact of such

Philosophy For The Young
Funded by a $9500 State ,Basic Skills
Grant, PROJECT+PLUS teachers and
administrators from four metro Atlanta
Catholic schools began their training
program this week.
The 50 hour staff development session is
being conducted by Dr. Ron Rembert,
Project Consultant, and Sister Patricia
Geary, Project Director. Selected teachers
and administrators from Christ the King,
Our Lady of Lourdes, St. Jude’s, and Ss.
Peter and Paul schools are involved in the
program.
Utilizing curriculum materials based
upon research done at Montclair State
College, PROJECT+PLUS teachers will be
involved in teaching philosophy to children
in fifth and/or sixth grade classrooms in the
four participating Catholic schools.
The curriculum materials consist of a
philosophical novel for children, HARRY
STOTTLEMEIER’S DISCOVERY, and a
detailed teacher’s guide, PHILOSOPHICAL
INQUIRY. In the novel, Harry, a fifth
grader, discovers through a series of
discussions with his classmates, the
fundamentals of logic. Having learned these
fundamentals, Harry and his friends attempt
to solve problems encountered in their other
school subjects.
Children from Newark, New Jersey, to
Oahu, Hawaii, who have enengaged in the
same kinds of philosophical discussions
which Harry and his friends experience in
HARRY STOTTLEMEIER’S
DISCOVERY, have demonstrated, as a
result, remarkable improvement in their
language skills.
U.S. Catholic Press
criticism is heightened
when columns are
syndicated and widely
circulated.
“A letter from the
Secretariat of State
expressed concern over this
problem, and Ordinaries
are encouraged to consider
their responsibilities in
governing the policy of
those publications over
which they have control.
To this I would add a word
of encouragement for the
promotion of a sound and
vital Catholic press, so
useful an instrument for
evangelization and so
vibrant in the life of the
church in the United
States.”
Father Lawrence
Purcell, secretary of the
apostolic delegation, said
the letter from the
Secretariat of State did not
cite specific cases.
‘‘The text of
Archbishop Laghi’s letter is
basically the same text as
the letter received here
from the Secretariat of
State,” Father Purcell said.
(In Vatican City, a
Vatican official familiar
with the situation said the
secretariat wanted to avoid
citing specific cases, but
that the criticism was
probably aimed at a
syndicated columnist “who
has been speaking out
against the church” and “it
is very clear what the
secretariat wants someone
to do.” The official did not
identify the columnist nor
explain what action the
secretariat would want
taken.)
The delegate’s letter,
dated April 27, became
public when it was
published in the May 28
issue of The Wanderer,
national Catholic weekly
newspaper published in St.
Paul, Minn. The Wanderer
did not say how it obtained
the letter.
The Catholic Press
Association (CPA) of the
United States and Canada
wrote to the delegate after
his letter became public.
“It is extremely rare for
attacks on the authority or
person of the holy father to
appear in American
Catholic publications,”
said the CPA’s letter, dated
May 28 and signed by
Father Norman J.
Muckerman, CPA
president, and James A.
Doyle, CPA executive
director.
Catholic editors and
publishers are “highly
professional and loyal
Catholic journalists”
having “a strong adherence
to the faith and to the
magisterium,” added the
CPA letter.
“We are puzzled by the
broad general nature of
your criticisms and would
like to suggest that specific
criticisms of specific
instances ought to be
directed to the publishers,
editors, or columnists in
question.
“We would be happy, in
fact, to have the Catholic
Press Association act as an
agency to transmit such
specific criticisms to CPA
member publishers,” it
added.
The CPA letter said that
some articles considered
disturbing by some are “in
fact nothing more than
open discussion of
controversial matters still
open for discussion.”

25 Years At The
Cathedral Keys
The following was excerpted from the parish bulletin of the
Cathedral of Christ the King:
This year marks the 25th anniversary of Mr. Keith
Langworthy as organist of the Cathedral parish. It is
difficult to express adequately the sentiments we feel on
this occasion. Not only has Mr. Langworthy been a
consummate organist, playing with a skill comparable to
any organist here in the city of Atlanta and even this
country, but he has also been the most faithful of servants
to the Cathedral Parish of Christ the King.
Faithfully, he has played in all sorts of weather, under all
kinds of conditions, week in and week out, at weddings,
funerals and on special occasions, always with the same
patience and gentleness that marks him as a true gentleman.
In the name of the Cathedral parishioners, we extend to
Keith heartiest congratulations and thanks for his service,
and we say to him “Well done, Keith!”
