NEWS VIEW
The Society’s
pre-school on Hunt Street
was also closed at the end
of the school year.
An example of the
kind of inflationary cost
increases faced at the
pre-school was a contract
with the Atlanta Board of
Education for lunch
which went up 40 percent
between 1979 and 1980,
Mrs. Knott said. “We
would have had to charge
fees” to keep the centers
operating, she said, “and
we didn’t want to do
that.”
The pain of the
decision was mitigated to
some extent by the
awareness that other child
care facilities are now
available in the area. The
pre-school was the first to
open, and now many
pre-school and day care
centers are operating in
Bedford-Pine. The
Society would like to
“refocus” on needs which
are not being widely met,
Mrs. Knott said, such as
emergency shelter and
food and clothing. While
the number of child care
facilities has increased
dramatically in Atlanta
since the mid-60s, only
one agency, The Christian
Council, has been added
to the list of those
providing direct financial
assistance in those years,
she noted.
Another heartening
development was the
placement of all of the
children and most of the
employees at the
Society’s facilities in
other centers and jobs.
The triplets pictured at
the left, Miles, Michael
and Dustin Luckie, will be
graduating to St. John the
Evangelist in Hapeville.
--Gretchen Keiser
First graduation for
the kids pictured
above was also the last for
the St. Vincent de Paul
Child Care Center on
North Avenue.
The graduates,
pictured in cap and gown,
were among the many
cared for at the center,
which has operated for
more than 10 years and
been under the direction
of Valerie Earvin. The
center, open to children
from 18 months to five
years old, was among the
first to open in the
Bedford-Pine community
and charged no fee,
providing primarily a safe
learning environment for
children from
single-parent families
while the parent was at
work.
The traditional
end-of-the-year
graduation was also this
year a farewell for the
school. Part of the
Bedford-Pine
redevelopment area, the
North Avenue building
had to be vacated. In
addition, the cost of
running the center had
become prohibitive, said
Betti Knott, executive
director of the Society.

First Priest To Join Glenmary Missioners Dies
CINCINNATI (NC) -
Father Raphael A. Sourd,
85, the first priest to join
the Glenmary Home
Missioners, died July 15 in
Cincinnati.
Father Sourd was the
first to join Father William
Howard Bishop, founder of
Glenmary. That was in July
1939, a month before the
official founding of the
home mission society on
Aug. 15.
The Mass of Christian
Burial for Father Sourd, a
native of Fayetteville,
Ohio, was to celebrated on
July 20 at Our Lady of the
Rosary Church in
Cincinnati.
Father Sourd had been
ordained a priest May 7,
1922, and he first served as
associate pastor of several
parishes in the Cincinnati
Archdiocese. When Father
Bishop died in 1953,
Father Sourd, who was
vicar general, became
superior general pro tem
until an election was held.
In 1939 when Father
Bishop and Father Sourd
began their ministry there
were 1,022 counties in the
United States without
resident priests. By 1981
the count had dropped to
545.
In the early days of the
Glenmary ministry, tent
and trailer preaching were a
means of introducing the
Catholic Church into
Appalachia and the rural
South. Sometimes Mass
was held in an open pasture
where a crude altar was
hastily built. Songs, prayers
and Scripture readings were
offered.
Father Sourd often
manned a booth at county
fairs, giving away
thousands of prayer cards.
On one tour of street
preaching in Kentucky
Father Sourd was showered
with stones. The county
sheriff arrested the
offenders and asked Father
Sourd to go to the jail to
press charges. Father Sourd
complied with the sheriff’s
request to visit the jail, but
it was to ask for clemency
for his assailants.
His action helped to
publicize the street
preaching because the
editor of the county
weekly headlined a front
page story “Father
Forgives Them When
Assaulted with Rocks.”
Father Sourd later joked
that the scars he had
received gradually
disappeared and “so failed
me in any glorification as a
martyr.”
The priest reported
receiving a friendly
reception much of the
time, visiting homes and
reading from the Bible.
Father Sourd remained
active full-time until he was
73. During the last 12 years
of his life he was part-time
chaplain to retired
members of the Sisters of
Charity at their
motherhouse at Mount St.
Joseph, Cincinnati.

‘Pilgrim’ Guidelines Settled
JERUSALEM (NC) - Officials representing the
Catholic Church and the Israeli government have
reached an agreement on tour guides that averted a
threatened closure by the church of the great
basilicas in Bethlehem and Nazareth.
The church and the government had been
involved in a dispute over a directive from an Israeli
tourism official at the end of May requiring
“pilgrim and other groups” to travel in Israel only
with a licensed government tour guide after July 1.
A communique issued after a meeting on July 5
between church and government officials said
“pilgrimages are religious activities and may be
freely assisted by spiritual leaders or animators.” In
the future, pilgrim groups may be guided by tour
leaders and priests in every place in the country
where “religious and spiritual guidance is the
primary object of the visit,” the communique said.
Hunger Strikers Encouraged
To Respond To Red Cross
VATICAN CITY (NC) Hunger strikers in
Northern Irish jails should suspend their fasts in
response to an initiative by the International Red
Cross, according to the Vatican newspaper,
L’Osservatore Romano.
A three-member delegation from International
Red Cross headquarters in Switzerland arrived in
Northern Ireland on July 16 to meet with
authorities at the Maze prison and with eight
prisoners who are on hunger strikes supported by
the illegal Irish Republican Army (IRA).
In recent weeks six hunger strikers have died,
beginning with Bobby Sands, who rejected an
appeal from Father John Magee, Pope John Paul
II’s personal secretary.
NCCB Clarifies
‘Ministry’ Meanings
WASHINGTON (NC) - An official of the
National Conference of Catholic Bishops (NCCB)
and the U.S. Catholic Conference (USCC)
confirmed that the NCCB Administrative
Committee has approved a proposal to use the term
“ministry” in NCCB-USCC documents only for
ordained ministry and designated lay ministry.
The proposal by the NCCB Committee on
Doctrine further specified that:
- By “ordained ministry” the committee means
the official work of people in the orders of bishop,
priest and deacon, and
- By “designated lay ministry” the committee
means the official work of acolyte or reader
(lector) carried out by people commissioned in
those two canonical offices; any other functions
that the Holy See may similarly establish in the
future; and functions established by a bishop in
charge of a diocese that are important, that are
performed in the name of the community and that
serve a permanent need of the church. These
ministries are exercised by people officially
designated to perform them.
The Administrative Committee also approved
the proposal by the Committee on Doctrine that
NCCB-USCC documents use the term “Christian
service” to refer to “the response to the call to serve
that flows from the sacraments of initiation.”
Baptism and confirmation are the sacraments of
initiation. This response to the call to serve
“requires no formal action on the part of
ecclesiastical authority,” the committee said.
