CELEBRATING 50 GOLDEN YEARS -
Archbishop Thomas A. Donnellan greets Mrs.
Kathleen Black, sister of Father Michael
McKeever, who came to Atlanta from New York
for the jubilee Mass. (Below right) The
Archbishop confers with Father McKeever, who
was ordained a priest in 1931, before the
celebration begins. The anniversary Mass was
concelebrated by 25 priests in Holy Spirit
Church and Archbishop Donnellan preached the
homily. Music was arranged by Bob Krick and
sung by the Holy Spirit Choir. Both Father
Michael and Kathleen were born in County

Roach Issues Statement On Cardinal Cody
WASHINGTON (NC) -
Archbishop John R. Roach
of St. Paul-Minneapolis,
president of the National
Conference of Catholic
Bishops (NCCB), Sept. 15
termed the allegations
involving Cardinal John
Cody of Chicago a source
of “great pain.”
“The allegations in news
stories of the past week
from Chicago have caused
great pain to Catholics
there and throughout the
country,” Archbishop
Roach said during a
regularly scheduled
Administrative Committee
meeting of the NCCB.
“Because of the legal
situation, it is not possible
for me to make any
substantive comment,”
Archbishop Roach said.
“But I can say that my
heart goes out to the
church in Chicago and to
Cardinal Cody, whom his
brother bishops have
known for many years and
esteem today as a man of
integrity, principle and
dedication to the church,”
the NCCB president added.
‘‘Plainly the present
situation is agonizing for
those involved. I pray for a
speedy and just resolution
for alleviation of the
human suffering and for
lasting reconciliation,”
Archbishop Roach said.
Pope To Preside
At Beatification
VATICAN CITY (NC) - The Vatican’s Congregation for
Saints’ Causes on Sept. 8 confirmed reports that Pope John
Paul II will return to Rome to preside at a beatification
ceremony Oct. 4 in St. Peter’s Square.
The pope has been convalescing at the papal summer
residence at Castelgandolfo, 15 miles from Rome,
recovering from injuries suffered in an attempt on his life on
May 13. He was released from the hospital on Aug. 14 and
has been staying at Castelgandolfo since then.
Vatican sources said that the pope has regained much of
his old vigor and that the ceremony Oct. 4 will mark his
permanent return to the Vatican and to a somewhat normal
schedule of meetings, appointments and audiences.
When the pontiff was discharged from the hospital
doctors were predicting a two-month recuperative phase.
Five men and women are scheduled to be beatified on
Oct. 4, said the Congregation for Saints’ Causes.
They are Alanus De Solminihac, a 17th-century French
bishop; Richard Pampuri, an Italian member of the Order of
the Hospitalers of St. John of God, who died in 1930;
Aloysius Scrosoppi, a 19th-century Italian who was a
member of the Oratorian Fathers and founded the Sisters of
Divine Providence; Maria Repetto, a 19th-century Italian
member of the Order of Our Lady of Refuge; and Claudine
Thevenet, known in religious life as Maria A. Sancto Ignatio,
a 19th-century French nun who founded the Congregation
of Jesus-Mary.
‘From A Far Country’
Pleases Pope
CASTALGANDOLFO, Italy (NC) - A major
international film which cost $10 million to produce has
been previewed with pleasure by the chief character it
portrays, Pope John Paul II.
On Aug. 29, in a second-floor room of his summer
residence, the pope and 40 invited guests were given a
private showing of “From a Far Country: John Paul II.’'
When the 140-minute movie had ended the pontiff,
reportedly visibly moved, stood motionless for a moment,
then embraced the film’s director, Krysztof Zanussi.
The pope said to Zanussi, “May God repay you for your
work. May God repay you for my Poland.”
The film is a story of Poland’s last 50 years and also a
biography of Karol Wojtyla, who is woven inextricably into
the history of Poland’s Catholicism and the nation’s struggle
for freedom.
Made with the approval both of the Vatican and of the
Polish government, the movie traces the life of Pope John
Paul from his infancy through his election as pope in 1978
and ends with scenes of the pontiff’s visit to his native
country in 1979.
The movie portrays the childhood of Karol Wojtyla, his
amateur acting career, his wartime work in the mines during
the Nazi occupation of Poland, and his relationship with a
girl who fell in love with him before he entered the
priesthood.
The pope is played in the film by the Polish actor Cezary
Morawski.
The Vatican cooperated throughout as the movie was
filmed. The pope read and approved the script, and he gave
permission for the use of the Sistine Chapel and the papal
waiting rooms for the filming of certain scenes.
Several times as the film was being shot the pope met
with Zanussi and Morawski, and once the entire cast of 120
actors and actresses (though not the 5,000 extras) was
entertained at the Vatican.
Zanussi indicated that the filming required the
collaboration of seven Vatican congregations.
