Pope Names Representative
As Temporary Jesuit Head
BY NANCY FRAZIER
ROME (NC) --
Following the example of
their ailing superior
general, many Jesuits
reacted to Pope John
Paul II’s appointment of a
personal representative to
head the Society of Jesus
temporarily.
Father Pedro Arrupe,
who remains superior
general but is partially
paralyzed from an Aug. 7
“The naming of
Father Pittau is seen in
Jesuit circles as a sign of
continuity with the
reign of Father Arrupe,
who also once was
provincial in Japan. It is
also interpreted as
putting the spotlight on
a man the Pope
considers an ideal
Jesuit.”
stroke, said from his sick
bed at Jesuit headquarters
in Rome: “I hope that the
entire Society of Jesus will
be open to the decisions of
the holy father, as I am.”
Beginning Oct. 31,
Jesuit Father Paolo Dezza
will take over the
governance of the
27,000-member society,
representing the pope in
preparations for a general
congregation to elect a
successor to Father Arrupe.
The pope communicated
the appointment in an Oct.
5 letter to Father Arrupe.
Named to assist the
79-year-old Father Dezza,
and to succeed him if he
dies oris incapacitated, was
Father Joseph Pittau,
53-year-old provincial of
the Jesuits in Japan.
“We believe that the
society has received with
openness the decisions of
the pope,” said Father
Jean-Claude Dietsch,
director of the Jesuit Press
Office, regarding reaction
to the appointments in the
83 worldwide Jesuit
provinces.
According to Jesuit
sources who asked not to
be named, Pope John Paul’s
move is seen as an effort to
help the Jesuits provide a
more spiritual basis to their
social works.
“The holy father only
wants to see that the
commitment for human
promotion be accompanied
by a strong spiritual and
contemplative dimension,”
said one source.
The appointments also
serve as a sharp reminder of
the Jesuits’ “fourth vow,”
that of special obedience to
the pope.
“All of us are now called
to witness in a unique way
to the importance of our
vow of obedience and of
our oft-stated loyalty to
the holy father,” said
Father John Blewett, a U.S.
Jesuit working in Rome.
“No previous generation of
Jesuits has been given quite
this unique opportunity.”
Father Dezza, who has
held various posts within
the society and helped to
prepare for the last general
congregation of the Jesuits
(1974-75) as an assistant
general, is “highly
appreciated both within
and outside the society,”
said Father Blewett, who
has worked with Father
Dezza and Father Pittau.
Other Jesuit sources said
the papal representative,
who is nearly blind but is
said to have a sharp mind
and a good memory, is a
theological conservative
who will be an
intermediary between the
society and the pope.
Father Dezza’s role,
according to the sources, is
one of a moderator with
the task of reuniting the
Jesuits according to the
directives of the pope.
In a 1979 letter to all
Jesuits, Father Arrupe said
Pope John Paul had
expressed concern about
“secularizing tendencies,
austerity and discipline in
religious and community
life, fidelity to the
magisterium (teaching
authority of the church) in
doctrine, and the priestly
character of our apostolic
work.”
A papal letter to Father
Dezza has not been made
public, and the Vatican
released no details of a
private audience Oct. 24
between Pope John Paul
and his personal
representative.
Neither the Jesuits nor
Pope John Paul’s letter to
Father Arrupe specified
when the general
congregation to elect a new
superior general will take
place. The Jesuits
announced, using the
pope’s phrase, that it will
be held “in due time.”
The society’s last
general congregation,
which opened in December
1974, was preceded by
more than four years of
preparation.

announced the
preparations in November
1970, a preparatory
committee chairman was
named in April 1971, Pope
Paul VI was advised in early
1972, and the meeting was
formally announced in
September 1973.
One indication that the
preparatory process will be
lengthy is the appointment
of Father Pittau as Father
Dezza’s potential
successor.
The naming of Father
Pittau is seen in Jesuit
circles as a sign of
continuity with the reign of
Father Arrupe, who also
once was provincial in
Japan. It is also interpreted
as putting the spotlight on a
man the pope considers an
ideal Jesuit.
The Rome daily
newspaper, II Tempo,
reported Oct. 24 that when
the pope visited Japan in
early 1981 and saw the
effect of Father Pittau’s
leadership on Sophia
University and the Jesuit
community in Tokyo, he
exclaimed: “These are the
true Jesuits!”
Father Pittau is well
respected among Jesuits
and in academic circles.
While studying at
Harvard University in the
late 1960s he completed his
doctorate thesis on
political theory in the early
Meiji period in Japan in two
years and won Harvard’s
annual prize for the best
thesis in his field.
The Italian Jesuit could
also serve as a link between
the Vatican and the
Chinese government.
Invited to visit Beijing last
March by the Chinese
government, he was
consulted by the education
ministry on a variety of
issues.
“Father Pittau brings to
this assignment a wide
knowledge of the society
and the challenges we face,
a deep love of Father
Arrupe and esteem for the,
many accomplishments
that have marked his years
as general and a veneration
of our holy father,” said
Father Blewett.
The preparatory period
for a general congregation
may have another purpose,
to test Father Pittau’s
abilities as the future
superior general, according
to several sources.

Priest-Alcoholic To Lead
Seminars At St.
Jude’s
BY ROSE JAMES
“I am Father Jack and I
am an alcoholic.” This
familiar statement startles
the audience because of its
surprising source. We
anticipate the clergy to
present glowing sermons
that uplift and speak of the
good life. Father Jack is a
contradiction in that he
speaks to us of his
addiction to alcohol, keeps
us rooted in reality, and we
are fascinated by our
ability to see that this
dreaded disease can claim a
victim irrespective of
position, place or
dedication.
Father Jack, a
Redemptorist priest from
Detroit, Michigan,
acknowledges that one out
of every ten drinking adults
is being destroyed by
alcoholism. His own
addiction came over many
years - from limiting
himself to one social drink,
to an increasing
dependency when
responsibilities for a large
parish prevented a restful
night. He became a solitary
drinker and in two years,
crossed the line from social
to compulsive drinking,
With U.S. backing for
freer international trade,
there were indications that
the 1982 negotiations on
the General Agreement on
Tariffs and Trade will be
more anti-protectionist,
despite strong protectionist
sentiments among other
developed nations.
On the other hand,
opposition by the United
States and oil exporting
countries to a new world
agency to finance energy
development in less
developed countries led to
uncertainty about the
future of such an agency.
On the major decision of
the summit, to carry on
global negotiations on
economic development
issues under U.N. auspices,
there was general
agreement only that it
constituted some progress.
The different countries
represented at the summit
disagreed on the meaning
of the agreement.
Canadian Prime Minister
Pierre Elliot Trudeau, a
co-chairman of the
meeting, said that the
matter of global
negotiations has been left
to some as yet unspecified
‘‘mutually agreed
procedure at the United
Nations” - and then
commented, “If you said
that begged the question, I
would agree with you.”

the victim who is caught in

family who suffers as a

the victim while loved ones

Father Jack has
concentrated on bringing
out the important facts
regarding the disease of
alcoholism to the general
public by speaking in many
churches after his own cure
of the disease at Guest
House, a treatment center
in Lake Orion, Michigan.
He has spoken to more than
a million adults and
teenagers since August,
1975. He urges
participation by all that
early signs of the disease
may be recognized.
Alcoholism is often styled a

every member is grievously

discuss the supportive

needed to arrest the disease

those who suffer and fail to

Alcoholism is a major
problem for many that live
in the Atlanta area. The
information from Guest
House, the treatment
center for alcoholism,
states that the alcoholic has
three choices: complete
abstinence, insanity, or
alcohol induced death. The
choice cannot be made by
the victim who has become
addicted unless he or she
comes to some recognition
of the disease, and is
supported spiritually,
National Bible Week
Booklet Available
WASHINGTON (NC) - A planning and resource booklet
has been prepared by the U.S. Center for the Catholic
Biblical Apostolate for the Catholic observance of the
annual National Bible Week (Nov. 15-22).
The booklet is for homes, schools, parishes and adult
education programs. It was written on the theme, “the
Word of God is Spirit and Life.” The theme emphasizes the
transforming power of God, said Bishop Thomas C. Kelly,
general secretary of the National Conference of Catholic
Bishops, in a letter to bishops.
This year for the first time the Catholic observance of
National Bible Week is being held one week earlier than the
general observance scheduled for the week of Thanksgiving.
The purpose of the change is to avoid possible conflicts
with the Sunday which is traditionally reserved for
promoting the Campaign for Human Development in
parishes throughout the country and, to a lesser extent,
with the Thanksgiving weekend festivities, Bishop Kelly
said.
“It is hoped that this change, which has been made with
the understanding and support of National Bible
Committee officials, will result in an even greater Catholic
participation in the observance than has been the case in the
past,” said the bishop.
The National Bible Week booklet is available from
United States Catholic Conference Office of Publishing
Services at $1.95 plus postage.
