Corpus Christi Presents “Sounds Of Christmas”
“Sounds of Christmas,” presented by the Corpus Christi
music department, will be held on December 11 and 12 at
8:15 p.m. at Corpus Christi Church in Stone Mountain. This
third annual concert will be under the direction of Lori
Jungers. Bob Rylander is the organist.
Eleven years ago, Corpus Christi’s adult choir originated
with 15 voices. Today, it has 64 members who sing weekly
at the 11 a.m. Mass. The musical talents of Corpus Christi
have expanded, forming other groups and creating a strong
musical department.
A children’s choir of 84 voices, known as The Christi
Singers, sings once a month at the 8:30 a.m. Mass. The
youth group, better known as The Folk Singers, sings every
Sunday at the 7 p.m. Mass. Once a month the parish has a
Mass for the deaf. A Sign Choir was established, and now
boasts 15 members. At ll a.m., while the adult choir sings
in the church, a second Mass of family liturgy is said,
downstairs in the church hall. At this Mass, Mary and Jim
Brooks provide the musical and vocal worship.
All this talent is proudly represented in Corpus Christi’s
Christmas Program. The concert is divided into two parts. In
the first part, The Christi Singers, under the direction of Pat
Andre, will do excerpts from “The Christmas Story” by)
Marie Pooler. They will also join the adult choir for a
number in the second half. A Corpus Christi Society for the
Deaf, The Sign of Praises, will sign the entire program. Other-
members of the Music Department will also perform in the*
first half of the program.
In the second half, the adult choir will break away from
the traditional carols, and present an upbeat choral
experience on the Birth of Christ, “I Believe” by John
Wilson. John Spann is the narrator.
No tickets have been issued. Parishioners and friends will
be seated on a first come, first seated basis.

Sr. Carmelita Dowling, CSJ
1890-1981
Sister Carmelita Dowling, C.S.J., educator and
administrator in Georgia for more than 50 years, died
Sunday, Nov. 29 at Nazareth Convent in St. Louis, Mo. She
was 91.
Born July 9, 1890 in Savannah, Sister Carmelita was
educated by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondolet of
Georgia at St. Joseph’s Academy in Washington, Ga., where
she entered the novitiate. She was a sister of St. Joseph for
72 years, a teacher, principal, administrator, and, in the
order, a superior and a provincial. Sister Carmelita had
retired to Nazareth Convent in 1976.
After making her first vows on March 19, 1911, Sister
Carmelita came to Atlanta and taught primary grades at
Sacred Heart School. She later returned to Sacred Heart as
teacher and principal of the high school. She also taught at
Mount St. Joseph and Aquinas High School in Augusta and
became mother superior of the Georgia sisters. When the
Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondolet of Georgia joined the St.
Louis Province, Sister Carmelita was named provincial from
1943-1949. Her service in Georgia spanned 57 years and she
was the first native sister of Georgia to hold the office of
provincial.
Sister Marcella Meyer, C.S.J., recalled Sister Carmelita’s
devotion to her work and insistence upon education; during
winter months, sisters were encouraged to take
correspondence courses, while during the summer, it was
summer school. “She was a great administrator and a
wonderful person,” Sister Marcella said.
