Ministry To Deaf—
(Continued from page 1)
of a spiritual journey begun at the age of 15. As an
impressionable teenager, Father Coughlin read a book
entitled “Burnt Out Incense,” the simple story of the life of
a Trappist monk written by Father Raymond, OCSO of
Gesthemane Abbey in Kentucky.
At the time, “I was a young boy looking for a role
model,” claimed Father Coughlin. “That book just hit me -
I wanted to be like him.”
Though the deaf priest’s journey did not include a
permanent association with the Trappists, the book exerted
a profound influence on Father Coughlin’s life. In 1980 he
decided to visit Gesthemane to experience first-hand the
setting of the monk’s life.
“I got special permission to go all around the
monastery,” he remembered. “But just before I left, the
guest-master came over and asked me why I was here. I told
him and the next moment Father Raymond was there.”
The Trappist author, now an aging monk, told Father
Coughlin that “he never dreamed his book would reach
anyone outside the ‘wall’ or encourage a handicapped
person to serve God,” the deaf priest related.
Such youthful encouragement was evidently needed, for
Father Coughlin now indicates that because he was
schooled in boarding institutions for the deaf since the age
of three, he “had a very low level of self-esteem.”
Although attitudes toward the hearing-handicapped are
improving, Father Coughlin maintains that in institutions,
deaf people learn to be passive. “They are not encouraged to
be creators, but to conform to society and be producers,”
he said.
Father Tom Coughlin has evidently beaten the odds.
The transformation from the shy and withdrawn young
man on the steps of the Trinitarian seminary to the warm
and outgoing missionary sure of his calling seems complete.
As an aggressive champion of the deaf, Father Coughlin
listens with his heart and speaks in faith, communicating in
a very unique way his commitment to those he so faithfully
serves.
Lay Organizations—
(Continued from page 1)
on the document’s discussion of democratic procedures
within church organizations, Bishop Cordes said, “Anyone
who is a realist knows that unanimity is never achieved. But
the ideal must always be unanimity.”
“What the document is saying is that we must not take
too easily the models of society into the internal workings
of the church,” he added.
The document’s discussion of the specific role of
ecclesiastical assistants was based on a December 1979
address by Pope John Paul II to the chaplains of
international Catholic associations.
“In the organizations and associations which you serve -
make no mistake about it - the church wishes you to be
priests, and the lay people that you meet in them wish you
to be priests and nothing but priests,” the pope said.
“The priests’ directive function has to be accompanied
by a specifically priestly activity, if the minister does not
wish to fall into the superficiality of a ‘manager’ and if he
hopes to build up a community open to the action of the
Spirit,” the laity council document said.
“If, however, this priestly function were to be
transformed into a role of simple social predominance in the
church, the ministry would degenerate into cultic
functionalism and would betray the biblical model of
ministry,” it added.
The priest’s special role “should not be considered as a
reward or as a personal distinction,” the document said.
“By his ordination the one who is called and sent is not, nor
does he become, a better Christian than others.”
The chaplain’s primary duty, “in any and every case,” is
to proclaim the Gospel and administer the sacraments, the
council said.
“Priests working with associations are called upon, by
turns, to work fraternally with the faithful and to have a
‘paternal attention’ for them in Christ,” the document said.
“They should therefore share with zeal and joy in the life

of the community, without forgetting that they carry an
irreplaceable responsibility,” it added.
The laity council said all ecclesiastical assistants should
be appointed for fixed terms by the Vatican for
international organizations and by the local bishop for the
diocesan units.
The document said issues such as the shortage of priests
available for such posts, the use of Religious or lay people as
chaplains and the possibility of a permanent training
program for those who give spiritual assistance to lay groups
are still unresolved. ,
Bishop Cordes said that the document is “not definitive”
and was designed to promote discussion of the topic.
