Hospitality House
Opens In Decatur
The Oakhurst Baptist Church Hospitality House, 222
Eastlake Drive in Decatur, has embarked on a mission to
the street men of the metro area. The intent of this
mission is to feed, shelter, and share hospitality with a
group of 10-12 homeless men during the cold winter
months.
Modeled on Dorothy Day’s Catholic Worker houses,
the ministry is also fashioned after Clifton Presbyterian’s
shelter and is somewhat like Central Presbyterian’s effort
in downtown Atlanta. The men are given dinner,
breakfast, a warm and comfortable place to sleep,
clothes, a shower, access to a washer and dryer, and
transportation to and from the inner city. The
hospitality house will be open seven days a week from
December through March.
Oakhurst Baptist Church hopes that some members
of the Archdiocese of Atlanta might be called to minister
to these men who are cold, broken and suffering from
poor nutrition and lack of rest. Volunteers are needed to
cook and visit or spend the night and share time with
these men.
If you can help, call Ann Connor of Sts. Peter and
Paul Church (987-1121 home; 329-4261 work).
Grey Nuns Gather
A weekend of celebration characterized by renewed
spirit, commitment, and friendship was experienced by
approximately 250 Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart at
their Motherhouse in Yardley, Pennsylvania, from
Thanksgiving evening to Sunday, November 29.
The celebration revisited the past 60 years of their
own foundation, praised and thanked God for the many
past and present favors received, and expressed their
hopes for the future. The sisters conducted and
participated in workshops concerning the social issues of
today, reflecting on their impact on prayer, community,
and ministry.
The entire Grey Nun community of Atlanta was in
attendance, along with sisters from New York, Buffalo,
Ogdensburg, Philadelphia, and from as far away as Lima,
Peru, and Kodiak, Alaska.
Teacher
Published
For many years,
European countries have
had a gardening program
for their primary and
secondary school
children.
Now, Christ the King
teacher, Danny
O’Connor, has authored a
gardening guide for young
people, THE YOUTH
G A R D E N I N G
PROGRAM MANUAL,
published by Clemson
Press. The book focuses
on gardening for students,
with an emphasis on
nature study and science.
The city of Cleveland,
Ohio has set up this type
of program in their public
school system.
Mr. O’Connor, a native
of Indiana, received his
masters degree in
horticulture therapy at
Clemson University. His
wife also holds a degree in
horticulture and teaches
at Fern bank Science
Center in Atlanta.
A group of concerned
parishioners, both black
and white, had been
developing the proposal
for a commission since
last summer. The group
will hold its first
re-organizational meeting
sometime in February. A
lay chairperson and a
priest-secretary will be
chosen at that time.

student Travis Byrd.
Black Catholic
Commission Formed
LfiJ
NAMRP Names
Secretary
Mrs. Toni Miralles of
Dunwoody, Ga., has been
elected secretary of the
National Apostolate with
Mentally Retarded Persons
(NAMRP).
Established in 1967,
NAMRP is concerned with
the general pastoral
ministry to handicapped
persons. It has 1,000
members. The episcopal
moderator is Bishop
Thomas J. Murphy of Great
Falls, Mont.
The establishment of a
new Commission on
Black Catholic Concerns
was announced this
month by Archdiocesan
Chancellor, Monsignor
Jerry E. Hardy.
The announcement
followed consideration of
such a commission by the
Archdiocesan Board of
Consultors, who
recommended at its
December meeting that
the commission be
established. Archbishop
Donnellan accepted the
recommendation of the
board.
The commission will
be comprised of delegates
from Most Blessed
Sacrament, Our Lady of
Lourdes, St. Anthony’s,
St. John the Evangelist,
St. Paul of the Cross and
Sts. Peter and Paul
parishes. Each pastor has
been asked to select three
delegates by January 15,
1982.
“The hope is that this
commission will help us
direct our ministry in the
black community in
somewhat the same way
the Spanish comite did
earlier for our Spanish
apostolate,” Monsignor
Hardy commented.
Hatch Amendment Briefing
Brings Pro-Lifers To Wash.
WASHINGTON - Plans
for prayer and action in
support of the unborn were
explained to Catholic
diocesan pro-life leaders
from across the United
States, including Sheila
Mallon from Atlanta.
The thrust of the
two-day meeting,
December 2 and 3, was a
thorough briefing on the
Hatch Human Life
Amendment (S.J. Res.
110).
Terence Cardinal
Cooke, chairman of the
Bishops’ Committee for
Pro-Life Activities, assured
the conferees that the
nation’s Catholic bishops
were united in their
support of the Hatch
Amendment. Referring to
the recent meeting of the
National Conference of
Catholic Bishops (NCCB),
Cardinal Cooke said,
‘‘There was no
divisiveness,” despite what
you may have read.
The cardinal also
announced plans for a
National Day of Prayer and
Fasting for the unborn on
January 22, 1982, the
ninth anniversary of the
Supreme Court decisions
that legalized abortion
-on-demand in the United
States throughout the
entire nine months of
pregnancy.
Senator Orrin Hatch
(R-UT), sponsor of the
amendment that bears his
name, and chairman of the
Judiciary Subcommittee
on the Constitution which
has been holding hearings
on human life amend
ments, made an appearance
to pay tribute to those at
the conference who
brought the effort “to this
point where success is in

sight.” Subcommittee
action is expected within
the next two weeks, and
debate will move to the
Senate floor in February or
March, 1982, according to
a timetable laid out by
Senator Hatch for passage
of his proposed
amendment to the
Constitution.
The Hatch Amendment
denies a constitutional
right to abortion, and
provides that Congress and
the states have the power to
restrict or prohibit
abortions.
The Hatch Amendment
avoids the dilemma of
states rights by authorizing
Congress to pass national
legislation. However, by
also authorizing concurrent
state legislation, the
amendment makes possible
the utilization of both
federal and state
mechanisms for
compliance.
