Faye Staley Remembered...
Faye Staley, faithful
parishioner of St.
Thomas More Church in
Decatur and active
member of the
Archdiocesan Council of
Catholic Women, died
December 30 at the age
of 57.
Mrs. Staley was one of
the original members of
the Knights of Columbus
women’s auxiliary,
Father Thomas O’Reilly
Council 4358 in Decatur,
and served as president
of that auxiliary in 1975.
She joined the Ladies
Guild of St. Thomas
More in the mid-sixties
and became president of
that organization in
1979.
As parish representat
ive to the National
Council of Catholic
Women’s Convention,
she traveled to New
Orleans and was a
delegate to the local
conventions of the
Atlanta Archdiocesan
Council of Catholic
Women for many years.
At the time of her
death, Mrs. Staley was
treasurer of the
AACCW’s northeast
deanery, having assumed
that responsibility in
September of last year.
‘‘She loved the
(council) meetings,” said
her friend Betty Lynch
Mrs. Faye Staley
of St. Oliver Plunkett
Church in Snellville.
“She loved the sharing
and really cared for the
people.”
Faye Staley’s loyalty
to Our Lady of Perpetual
Help Cancer Home was
unfailing. She and other
members of the parish
Infant of Prague study
group included the
cancer home as one of
their most important
projects.
A convert to
Catholicism, Mrs. Staley
is remembered as one
who shared herself
unselfishly with her
church and the friends
she met within it.
She is survived by her
husband, Arthur, and her
five children.
AACCW Offers

Pregnancy and Newborn Care” at the Garden Room
Restaurant. Luncheon will follow at noon.
Afternoon speakers will include Katy Herber on
“Motivation,” and Sue Rusche, president of DeKalb
Families in Action, discussing current drug legislation.
Sheila Mallon of the Archdiocesan Pro-Life Office will
present a talk on human life issues and Dottie Tracy,
past president of the League of Women Voters in
Georgia will discuss “Political Involvement: A Christian

Press Conference
Marks Anniversary
Georgia Right-to-Life will hold a press conference
at the State Capitol Friday morning, Janaury 22 at
9:30 a.m. to mark the ninth anniversary of the Supreme
Court abortion decision.
Representatives of pro-life groups will deliver brief
statements to the press and the public is encouraged to
attend.
Jean Staker Garton To Speak Jan. 31
Dr. Jean Staker Garton, author and the president of
Lutherans for Life, is scheduled to address Family Night
in Support of Life, Jan. 31 at the Cathedral Hyland
Center.
Dr. Garton, who was the keynote speaker at last year’s
Family Night presentation, addressing the way that
language is manipulated in the debate over abortion, will
speak this year on the commitment needed by those
working for passage of a Human Life Amendment. Her
talk, given at the Christian Action Council’s convocation
in June 1981, focuses on the Old Testament story of
Esther as an example of the kind of dedication and
courage needed to change the course of today’s history.
Dr. Carton’s talk, and the Family Night Program, is one
of several pro-life events to take place in January,
coinciding with the ninth anniversary Jan. 22 of the U.S.
Supreme Court decision striking down abortion statutes
and enabling abortion on demand.
The weekend of Jan. 16-17, Life Roll cards will be
available in parishes, which make it possible for the person
signing to indicate support for a Human Life Amendment.
In addition, the U.S. Bishops’ Conference has asked
that Friday, Jan. 22, be set aside as a day of prayer and
fasting in support of human life.
A press conference by Georgia Right to Life will also be
held at the State Capitol Jan. 22. (see story above)
The Family Night at the Cathedral of Christ the King in
Atlanta will be held on a Sunday night, and, in addition to
Dr. Garton’s talk, will include music by The Promise folk
group from Holy Family parish in Marietta and prizes for
schools and religious education classes participating in a
pro-life essay and poster contest. A nursery will be
available for young children.
Dr. Garton, the mother of four children and wife of a
Lutheran clergyman, is the author of “Who Broke the
Baby?”, a book examining the role of language in forming
public opinion on the abortion issue. She has testified
before Congress during hearings on a Human Life
Amendment.
