window and in the parking
lot it was bedlam,”
recalled the priest just two
days after the slaying of
MARTA bus driver
Marjorie Melley. Father
Murray noted that police
and media representatives
were all over the normally
peaceful church property.
“I walked down to the
scene -- the press and T.V.
people were off to one
side,” Father Murray said.
He was informed by police
that the victim was already
dead, slumped over the
wheel of the bus, and was
requested to stand back so
the necessary police work
could be carried on.
“I couldn’t get close,”
he remembered. “I went
to the convent to check on
the Sisters” who, he
found, had not been
disturbed.
“It was really upsetting,
such a shock,” Father
Murray said sadly.
That same evening, in
another part of the
church, a parish council
meeting and prayer
gathering were being held.
All participants were
questioned by police.
Some of these
parishioners had seen a
large bus enter the church
grounds, but because
“d istances are
considerable” between
Assumption’s parking lots
and buildings, none of
those attending the
meetings thought the
presence of the bus very
unusual or felt
investigation was
necessary, Father Murray
explained.
The priest was
eventually escorted to the
rectory by police, who
indicated a concern that
the assailant might still be
hiding on parish grounds.
Assumption’s pastor,
Father Edward Seli, S.M.,
was out for the evening,
but assistant Father Mark
Kenney, S.M. still hadn’t
appeared, though his car
was the only one left in
the church’s upper lot. He
had been at the parish
council meeting earlier and
Father Murray was
worried that his brother
Marist had come to some
harm.
When Father Kenney
came in a short time later,
however, Father Murray
learned that he had been
discussing the night’s
events with a parish
council member.
Funeral services were
held for Marjorie Melley
on Thursday, January 7 at
the Oglethorpe Hill
Chapel. Reverend Jim R.

J was thirsty, and you

Mt 25:35
This is Paulo. All he is asking for
right now is a cup pf cold water. But some
times even this basic need cannot be met. Paulo
is one of a billion people who have no
access to safe drinking water.
Missionaries are working hard every
day to change this...to help babies like Paulo
grow up to be strong and healthy, in body
and spirit...to give them a cup of water
and much, much more: they bring Christ to the
mission poor.
Please help these missionaries continue their life-enriching work. Together
with them, you can help make the coming year a more liveable one for our brothers
and sisters in the Missions.
