Governador Busbee lo ha
hecho, lo mismo que los
governadores de otros
estados. La proclamacion
del Estado de Georgia dice
en parte:

de la familia, y la pareja
casada es la unidad basica
de la sociedad; y

Todos sabemos que la
institucion del
matrimonio, y todo lo que
se refiere a la vida de
familia estan bajo
constante presion y ataque
en la sociedad en que
vivimos. Esa propaganda
continua en contra de el
cimiento basico de nuestra
sociedad es malicioso, y
frecuentemente aceptado
casualmente. El
Movimeinto del Encuentro
Matrimonial Mundial esta
auspiciando una campana
nacional para proclamar
Febrero 14, dia de los
enamorados, como el dia
de “Nosotros Creemos en
el Matrimonio”. Su
proposito es demostrar al
mundo que el amor, la
felicidad v el romance si
existen en el matrimonio
de hoy, y que el
matrimonio sigue siendo la
fundacion de la sociedad,
contrario a lo que otros
quisieran hacernos creer.
A los governadores de
todos los 50 estados, y al
presidente Reagan se les ha
pedido este ano, que
proclamen oficialmente el
dia 14 de Febrero como el
dia de “Nosotros Creemos

necesidad urgente de

corriente hacia la
separacion y el divorcio en
este pais; y

entendido como un

procurar una verdadera
unidad entre esposo y

organizacion dedicada a
mejorar la institucion del

las parejas a examinar su
identidad como casados,
su relacion para con el

Por lo Tanto: Yo,
George Busbee,
Governador del Estado de

Walesa Denied News
Of Daughter's Birth
VATICAN CITY (NC) - A priest bringing news
of the birth of the seventh child of Lech Walesa,
head of Poland’s suspended Solidarity trade union
movement, was refused admittance to the Warsaw
villa where Walesa is under house arrest, Vatican
Radio reported Feb. 5.
The priest, who was not named by the
Jesuit-run station, traveled from Gdansk, Walesa’s
hometown, to Warsaw to tell the labor leader
about the Jan. 27 birth of a daughter and to ask
Walesa what the child should be named.
The priest, who was identified by other sources
as Father Henryk Jankowski, had initially
received permission to visit Walesa. But upon his
arrival, he was turned away at the entrance to the
villa, the radio report said.
Archbishop Kelly Writes
About Catholic Press
WASHINGTON - The postal rate increase that
went into effect Jan. 10 “is a major blow to the
ability of the non-profit and religious press in the
United States to speak its mind and message,”
Archbishop Thomas C. Kelly, general secretary of
the U.S. Catholic Conference, said in a letter to
the nation’s bishops. In his letter, released Jan.
29, the newly named archbishop of Louisville,
Ky., recommended that the bishops consult with
diocesan newspaper staffs to discuss ways of
overcoming the financial crisis and to increase
circulation. He also suggested that the bishops
issue a statement on the need for the Catholic
press in their dioceses and communities.

USCC Urges Renewal
Of Voting Rights Act
WASHINGTON (NC) ~ The U.S. Catholic
Conference, the action agency of the American
bishops, is urging bishops in the South and
Southwest to support renewal of the 1965 Voting
Rights Act, under attack in the U.S. Congress.
The law must be renewed by August 1982 to
remain in effect.
In a letter to bishops of Southern and
Southwestern diocese, Archbishop Thomas Kelly
urged the bishops to support renewal of the act
and contact their senators to encourage their vote
for extension of the act. Archbishop Kelly,
outgoing general secretary of the USCC, wrote his
£ letter shortly before leaving the USCC to become
archbishop of Louisville, Ky.
The Voting Rights Act is credited with the end
of numerous discriminatory practices - such as
poll taxes and literacy tests - which prevented
minorities from exercising their right to vote.
Christophers Honor
Cagney, "Today" Show
NEW YORK (NC) - Veteran film star James
Cagney and NBC’s “Today” show are to receive
special Christopher Awards, Father John Catoir,
director of The Christophers, announced.
The 77-year-old Cagney, who made his first
television appearance 25 years ago on a
Christopher program, is being honored “for his
singular contribution to the dramatic arts.”
“Today” is being cited "for 30 years of
five-day-a-week reporting on our nation and our
world.”
Father Catoir said also that seven books for
adults, four books for children, four motion
pictures and 12 television specials have been
selected for Christopher Awards. The awards will
be presented at special ceremonies in New York
on Feb. 25.
First given in 1949, the awards honor books,
films and television specials which affirm the
highest values of the human spirit, exhibit artistic
and technical proficiency and attain a significant
degree of public acceptance.
The award consists of a bronze medallion
undergoing open heart
surgery.
Her life, brief and
marked by suffering,
completely changed the
family, Mrs. Sullivan said.
“Our lives needed drastic
changing,” she said. “Anna
was God’s instrument.
Through her He reached
us.”
At the beginning of the
pregnancy, Mrs. Sullivan
said they had briefly
considered abortion,
although they were
unaware of Anna’s
physical defects. The
concern was simply
whether the family’s
lifestyle would be
complemented by another
child. Her impact upon
them has been so great
that they would not now
consider aborting a child,
even if, like Anna, she was
to live only a short time
and be in pain. “I praise
God that we did not abort
our child because I
shudder when I think of
who we might be right
now if her life had not
touched and influenced
ours,” Mrs. Sullivan said.
In her essay, Angela
wrote of the purpose each
life has and in her poster
Christy showed the child
as a gift from God.
The Sullivans appealed
especially for prayers for
parents who learn that the
child they are expecting
has birth defects. “I feel
this area of pro-life needs
tremendous prayer,” Mrs.
Sullivan said. “We must
pray for and support these
parents and babies.”
Encounters with other
families during Anna’s
hospitalization made her
more sensitive to the
trauma parents face when
told they are carrying a
defective child, Mrs.
Sullivan said.
Despite her own
daughter’s suffering, Mrs.
Sullivan said she had come
to think that each child is
a gift given exactly as the
family is at that moment.
“It’s so clear to me that
she came that we might
have life,” she said of her
daughter. “She always had
this spirit about her that
said, ‘I know something
you don’t know.”
“ . . . Sometimes I think
the ones who are so sick
have more to teach us
because they suffer.”

13,353 Civilians
Killed In El Salvador
SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador (NC) -
According to a Catholic Church agency, 13,353
civilians were killed during the political violence
in El Salvador in 1981. Many of the corpses could
not be identified.
The agency blamed the government and
military authorities for the situation.
The dead included close to 1,200 women,
children and old people listed as “victims of
massacres” during anti-insurgency operations by
security forces.
Missing are another 615 persons whose arrests
were witnessed by relatives and neighbors. Most
of the 400 political prisoners have been
incarcerated for six months or more without
indictment or trial, reported the agency, Socorro
Juridico (legal aid).
Socorro Juridico is an organization of the
Archdiocese of San Salvador which provides legal
aid to victims of political violence. It gathers
statistics about victims believed to have been
non-combatants in the civil war. Its figures do
not include members of security forces killed.
Pope To Visit
Spain This Fail
VATICAN CITY (NC) - Pope John Paul II will
visit Spain in mid-October to participate in
closing ceremonies commemorating the fourth
centenary of the death of St. Teresa of Avila, a
Vatican spokesman said Feb. 6.
Father Romeo Panciroli, director of the
Vatican Press Office, made the announcement
after a papal audience with seven Spanish bishops,
including Archbishop Gabino Diaz Merchan of
Oviedo, president of the Spanish Bishops’
Conference.
The spokesman gave no details about the trip,
which will be the first visit to Spain by a pope.
Archbishop Diaz said the visit would probably
begin Oct. 14, last at least eight days and include
stops in Madrid, Avila, Salamanca, Seville and
Barcelona.
The year-long celebrations of the 400th
anniversary of St. Teresa’s death are scheduled to
end Oct. 14. Her feast day is Oct. 15.
Pope John Paul had planned to visit Spain last
year to attend the opening ceremonies, but the
trip was postponed after the May 13 attempt on
his life.
