CHRISTOPHER CLOSEUP: A Look At The
People Who Are Shaping Tomorrow’s World-Today.
Leadership begins with service to others. An
ex-convict, two women who recruit and place
volunteers, a noted children’s author and illustrator, a
minister who was born without arms, and a Mormon
housewife-musician discuss various forms of service
with Christopher Closeup co-hosts, Father John
Catoir and Jeanne Glynn. “At Your Service” will be
aired on Sunday, February 14 at 7 a.m. over WSB-TV
(Channel 2) and on Monday, February 15 at 8 p.m.
over Cable Atlanta and Cable DeKalb (Channel 8).

INSIGHT: An Emmy award-winning Paulist
Production will present “The Flawed Magi” at 9 a.m.
on Sunday, February 14 over WVEU-TV (Channel
69) on UHF. Famous country western singer Jesse
Barnes (Bo Svenson) makes his annual “charity” visit
to the county jail. Is he doing the right thing for the
wrong reasons? This perceptive probe of human
motivation provides an answer.
Another INSIGHT production, “Checkmate,” will
be aired at 8:30 p.m. on Monday, February 15 over
AIB (Atlanta Interfaith Broadcasters) on Cable
Atlanta and Cable DeKalb (Channel 8).

AMERICAN CATHOLIC with Father John Powell,
S.J. will be presented by AIB on Wednesday,
February 17 at 9 p.m. over Cable Atlanta and Cable
DeKalb (Channel 8). In this special program Mercedes
McCambridge talks with Father Powell about
alcoholism and her experiences. Father Powell points
out that there is something in all of us that can be
filled only by God. To struggle with the questions of
life can be painful, almost disabling for some. Alcohol
and other addictive substances dull the edge of this
pain, but never really satisfy us. We need to have a
good image of self, a good image of a loving God and
a peace-filled relationship based on love.
RADIO:
RELIGION - WISE: A weekly look at the news
through the eyes of religion with Monsignor Noel
Burtenshaw, Rabbi Don Peterman of Congregation
Beth Shalom and Dr. Ted Baehr of the Episcopal
Radio and Television Foundation. They will discuss
the week’s happenings on Sunday at 6:30 a.m. and
9:30 p.m. on WGST (92AM).

St. Thomas Aquinas
Celebrates Marriage
“Celebrate Your Marriage” is the
theme of this year's marriage vow renewal
at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in
Alpharetta. All couples of the parish are
invited to renew their wedding vows on
Saturday, February 13, at 8 p.m. The
vow renewal Mass will be followed by a
champagne and cake reception in the
parish hall.
The theme of celebration was chosen
to remind couples that they can, and
should, take pride in their marriages.
“Too, frequently, we hear only the
negative aspects of marriage,” stated
Mary Eidman, chairperson of the
occasion. “We want to emphasize the
importance of good marriages and honor
these couples in a special ceremony.”
Couples are encouraged to bring a
picture of themselves, on their wedding
day, which will be on display during the
reception.

Mother Teresa’s Only Cloister
THE TRASH CAN BABY. Mrs. Gloria Walker
holds a baby taken by one of Mother Teresa’s
sisters from a garbage can on one of Calcutta’s
streets. “The sisters regularly bring home babies
like this,” says Mrs. Walker. “Ultimately these
children are adopted or placed in foster homes.
The sisters are delighted to rescue them from the
streets.”

Calcutta before leaving to
become a homemaker and
mother. She still returns to
visit her family in India
and always tries to see
Mother Teresa.
“I was so fortunate on
my last visit,” says Gloria.
“I spent almost two weeks
with her and saw her work
at first hand. It is so
wonderful.”
“Babies are rescued
from trash cans. Lepers,
still a most prevalent
misery, are taken into her
houses. The mentally
retarded are taken off the
streets and given her gentle
treatment.”
“But really it is not her
work that impresses. It is
HER. Looking into her
eyes, you just feel you are

“Her words are simple
but so courageous. She
says we want to take the
easy way out. Abortion
and mercy killing are our
answers. Give them a pill
and get rid of them. We
must take care, she says,
and not destroy. Those
who have been given a lot
have much to share. We
have many problems in the
world, but the biggest
problem is the lack of
love.”
Gloria Walker attended
Mass with Mother Teresa
and her novices on many
occasions. “She is a
minister of the Holy
Eucharist and helps
distribute communion to
the community. It is a
wonderful experience to
be with her at Mass. She
gives her spirit to her
sisters. It is obvious.”
Although Mother Teresa
is called to be at many
banquets, she rarely eats
away from her
community. The diet of
the sisters must be at all
times similar to that of the
poor they serve.
It would seem that
Mother Teresa’s next
project (she has recently-
established housing for the
poor) is a Catholic hospital

and its population of nine
million people. “She has

her endeavors,” says
Gloria Walker. “I’m sure
we will see this one
become a reality too.”
Everything that this
great modern apostle of
the poor stands for could
be summed up in her own
definition of her vocation.
A reporter commented
that while the work of
Mother Teresa was most
noble and heroic, it was so
little when so many
needed saving. “I ask you
to remember,” said the
great iady, “I did not
come to India to save the
poor. I came to be with
them.”
Gloria Walker will
testify that Teresa of
Calcutta is still true to that
vocation.

231-3005 V.?r,
Some kids would rather die
than bring home grades
like these. ^
In the next hour, 57 Amencan
kids vnll try to kill themselves.
Many over problems that may
seem small to adults. But to
children, even little things
can be matters of life
and death.
Grades that weren't
quite high enough. A
broken date. A game
that wasn't won. One
more reason for feel
ing they've failed to
measure up. To
others' expec
tations. Or
their own.
Suicide is
the second
leading
cause of
death among
young people
But it's
preventable. If only
someone recognizes
the danger signals in time.
Sudden changes in eating
and sleeping habits. Withdrawal from
friends and activities. Becoming accident
prone. Talking about being "gone" or "better
off dead." The most dangerous sign of all is
making final arrangements — giving away
favonte records, books or other treasured
possessions.
And don't think kids who talk about sui
cide won't try it. They will.
As a parent, the most important thing
you can do is show you care.
Ask your children about their feelings.
And listen to what they have to say.. Without
making judgments.
If you're concerned about self destruc
tive behavior, call your local suicide
prevention, mental health or crisis center.
Professional counseling can help suicidal
children, and
their families, learn
better ways of deal
ing with problems.
One of the tragedies of youth suicide
is that children just don't always understand.
That problems are temporary. And death
is permanent. They're not experienced
enough to realize their options. So some of
them choose the way that should not be
an option at all. And , some of them don't
live to regret it.
