Braille Volunteers
A Link To Schools
Children don’t like being different. It is difficult
enough to be the only blind pupil in a classroom,
but to also be the only one without a textbook, to
be told to sit quietly and just listen is really too
much to ask of a student.
That situation could happen all too often if it
were not for selfless and dedicated volunteers
throughout the country like those involved with
Atlanta Braille Volunteers.
Each spring, every teacher in Georgia who
expects to have a visually impaired student sends a
list of all needed texts to the State Library for the
Blind. If they are already available, brailled copies
are sent to the school. If not, a call may go out to
the book chairman of Atlanta Braille Volunteers.
The book is broken down into volumes
(depending on the grade, an average text could
require five to 30 volumes of 60-90 pages which
take an average of 30 minutes each to braille, proof,
and proof again) and volumes are assigned to the
various volunteers.
It takes an average of a year’s hard work to learn
the braille code and become proficient in it.
Brailling is a lonely type of volunteer work. Except
for classes while learning (2 hours one morning a
week during a school year) all brailling is done at
home and when books are needed you spend several
hours every day at your brailler.
Once a textbook has been put in braille it is
checked by a certified proofreader, duplicated for
the Georgia student and the master made available
at the State Library for any other student needing it
in the United States or Canada.
There are never enough Certified Braillists
(Certified by the Library of Congress) to fill all
textbook requests, library requests, and personal
requests. In addition, the turnover is great due to
changing family situations, transfers, need for
paying jobs or desire for a more social type of
volunteer work.
Classes to train new braillists will start this
September. They meet for about two hours per
week for about eight months. Orientation (a chance
to ask questions and see if brailling is right for you)
will be held at the Hammond Park Community
Building (corner of Hammond and Glenridge in
Sandy Springs) Tuesday, September 13 at 10 a.m.
Classes will start the same place the following week.
For potential volunteers on the other side of
town a class will be held in Covington this year
taught by Ruth Peck and Bob Young. It will start in
mid October. Those interested should call Bob
Young at 786-2974.
If there is sufficient demand an evening class
might also be scheduled. If interested call Carolyn
Lauer at 351-9471.

St. Joseph's Hospital
Will Present
'Belle Of Amherst"
“The Belle of Amherst,” a play about the life of Emily
Dickinson, the great American poet, will be hosted at
Saint Joseph’s Hospital by the Sandy Springs Arts and
Heritage Society on September 16 and 17 at 8 p.m. in
Saint Joseph Hospital Auditorium.
While Julie Harris brought this play to Broadway, Jane
Trechsel brings it to Southern audiences in a performance
that has been said “to surpass Miss Harris’.” Critics and
audiences alike rate this a “not-to-be-missed evening.”
Emily Dickinson spent her life within the confines of
her father’s home, and after her death, thousands of
poems were found stuffed into boxes, drawers and vases
all over the house. Drawing on these poems and other
research, playwright William Luce has fashioned an
enchanting one-woman show which brings Emily
Dickinson to life before your eyes.
Tickets are six dollars each and may be purchased at
the door in advance by calling 252-3605. Proceeds will go
to the building fund for the Sandy Springs Fine
Arts/Community Center.
