Atlanta's Black Catholic Commission
Hosts National Music, Liturgy Workshop
Plans are being finalized by the Archdiocesan
Commission for Black Catholic Concerns (C.B.C.C.) for
the arrival of several hundred participants from around
the country for the 15th annual Workshop in
Afro-American Culture and Worship, sponsored by the
National Office for Black Catholics (N.O.B.C.), July 21
through 26 at the Atlantan Hotel.
This year’s workshop is entitled, “Becoming and
Sharing: Evangelization Through Liturgy,” centering
around the Black Catholic Bishops’ Pastoral Letter on
Evangelization issued September 9, 1984, “What We Have
Seen and Heard.”
Throughout the week, Ms. Greer Gordon, author of the
study guide to the pastoral, will convene sessions directed
toward the implementation of the pastoral. In addition,
the workshop will include sessions directed to liturgy
planners, choir directors and members, parish council
members, pastors, deacons, lay Eucharistic ministers,
readers, cantors, teachers and those otherwise wishing to
learn more about Catholic worship and black culture.
There will be special sessions geared especially toward
participants who are teenagers and younger.
On three evenings, participants will gather at three of
the member parishes of the C.B.C.C. (St. Anthony’s, Our
Lady of Lourdes, and St. John the Evangelist) for special
programs, religious services and musical performances.
Participant groups already registered to attend include
individuals and choirs from New Orleans, Houston, Gary,
Ind., San Diego, Chicago, Washington, Birmingham, and
Alexandria, Virginia
The Atlanta workshop in July will draw many
nationally and internationally known black Catholic
musicians and liturgists to direct and lead sessions and/or
perform music. Among the 12 staff presenters this year
are Bishop James Lyke, auxiliary of Cleveland, convener
of the Black Catholic Bishops’ Pastoral on Evangelization
and of the Black Catholic Hymnal Project. Bishop Lyke
will give the keynote speech on Sunday, July 21st. Also
giving presentations are Avon Gillespie, an international
consultant in music education; Roger Holliman, Catholic
composer of two Masses, pianist and organist; Father
Clarence Williams, pastor, executive producer of a
national weekly radio program and creator of the filmstrip
series on evangelization; Ms. Gertrude Morris, director of
the Department of Evangelization for the N.O.B.C., and
many others. The cost of the workshop is $105 per adult
participant and $60 per child (12 and under). Housing and
meals are not included in this fee.
The N.O.B.C., the workshop’s sponsor, is a non-profit
organization affiliated with the United States Catholic
Conference through its ad-hoc committee of bishops.
Founded in 1970, it serves Catholic laity, religious and
clergy in areas of religious education, pastoral ministry,
evangelization, vocations, social action and liturgy
through programs and advocacy. Since its inception, it has
been concerned with the total black community and the
relation that the Catholic Church has toward that
community.
The Atlanta Archdiocesan Commission for Black
Catholic Concerns, which is co-sponsoring the workshop,
was established in 1981 and acts as a sounding board to
the Archbishop and addresses issues that face black
Catholics and blacks in general. Lay and clerical
commission representatives are appointed from Blessed
Sacrament, Our Lady of Lourdes, St. John the Evangelist,
St. Anthony’s, St. Paul of the Cross, Sts. Peter and Paul
churches and the Atlanta University Center.
For further information on the workshop, contact
Father Bruce Wilkinson, (404)-241-5862. To register,
write to N.O.B.C., 810 Rhode Island Ave., N.E.,

Prince Charles, Princess Diana Meet Pope
BY JOHN THAVIS
VATICAN CITY (NC) -
Pope John Paul II met
with Britain’s Prince
Charles of Wales and
Princess Diana April 29 in
a 35-minute audience in
the papal library.
The meeting at the
Vatican came during a
17-day tour of Italy by the
royal couple. The Vatican
described the meeting as
“private” and did not say
what was discussed.
As the pope welcomed
the couple at the door of
his private library, Prince
Charles bowed and
Princess Diana curtsied.
Afterward, the three
emerged from the meeting
looking relaxed and
smiling. Prince Charles
chatted informally with
the pope while
photographers took
pictures.
“I’m sure you are
familiar with this work,”
Prince Charles said later as
he presented the pontiff
with a copy of “The
Ecclesiastical History of
the English People.” The
work was written by St.
Bede the Venerable, an
eighth century monk and
church historian.
“He was a great person
of the common and
universal church,” the

The pope gave the royal
couple a picture of the
Virgin Mary, a mosaic
replica of a work in the
Rome Basilica of St. Maty
Major. The madonna is the
protectress of Romans. “It
is a very old picture of Our
Lady,” the pope told the
prince.
As heir apparent to the
British throne, Prince
Charles is in line to
become temporal head of
the (Anglican) Church of
England. His mother,
Queen Elizabeth II, now
exercises that office.
The pope also greeted
the royal couple’s
entourage, including nine
members of the royal
household.
At the end of the photo
session, Prince Charles
turned to the journalists
who had followed the
couple during their Italian
trip. “These ladies and
gentlemen are from the
press,” he told the pope,
who then greeted each one
individually -- to their
surprise.
The couple was
expected to visit the
Vatican museums later in
the day.
