AMERICAN CATHOLIC: “Ecumenism” - Not all
Christians are one in their beliefs and practices but

Father Bruce Ritter Appointed
To Meese Pornography
WASHINGTON (NC) -
Conventual Franciscan
Father Bruce Ritter,
founder of the New York-
based Covenant House pro
gram for runaway and ex
ploited children, has been
appointed by Attorney
General Edwin Meese III
to a new commission on
pornography.
At a recent news con
ference in Washington May
20, Meese announced the
11-member commission
which will study the effects
of pornography and recom
mend measures to control
its production and distribu
tion.
Father Ritter said May
21 he is “delighted and
honored to be appointed to
a commission that has a
very important respon
sibility.”
At the same time, Father
Ritter said, he is aware of
“how difficult, how com
plex, how sensitive this
matter is.”
Meese, saying a re
examination of the por
nography issue is long
overdue, said the content of
pornography was “radi
cally changed” since a
presidential commission in
1970 concluded that por
nography was, in Meese's
words, “not much of a
problem.”
Meese said his panel may
recommend legislation to
restrict production and
distribution of por
nography, new law en
forcement techniques or
even guidelines on how to
conduct pornography in
vestigations without
infringing upon Diear
Amendment right to free
speech.
Members of the panel
were chosen to “carefully
balance the need to control
distribution of this
material and the need to
protect First Amendment
freedoms,” he said.
Barry Lynn, an attorney
for the American Civil
Liberties Union, criticized
the new commission and
said he was “not convinced
the attorney general takes
these free expression
rights seriously.”
Lynn also specifically
criticized Father Ritter
and the panel’s chairman,
Henry Hudson, com
monwealth’s attorney for
Arlington, Va., saying
some members “cannot be
said to have an open mind
about sexually explicit
material.”
Father Ritter said that
while the ACLU has
“justifiable concerns about
civil liberties, the organiza
tion’s stands on por
nography issues are “very
seriously flawed.”
Panel
He said the ACLU “will
not back away from its
defense of child por
nography” despite a
unanimous Supreme Court
ruling three years ago that
child pornography does not
merit the protection of the
Constitution.
“The position of Cove
nant House and my own
personal position is that
child pornography is an
abhorrent evil,” Father
Ritter said. It is
“exploitative and lethal” to
children.
Capsule Reviews
Of Current Films
NEW YORK (NC) — The following are synopses of movie
reviews prepared by the staff of the U.S. Catholic Con
ference Department of Communication.
“Camila” (European Classics)
The daughter of a wealthy family in 19th-century Argen
tina falls in love with a Jesuit priest in this tragic love story
with modern political implications. Very powerful but for
mature viewers only. Besides the difficult historical mat
ters the movie deals with, the sacreligious character of the
love affair and one brief but excessively graphic love scene
caused the U.S. Catholic Conference to classify it A-IV —
adults, with reservations. There is no Motion Picture
Association of America rating.
“Code of Silence” (Orion)
Chuck Norris stars as a Chicago detective who uses his
martial arts skill to combat evil. Standard fare of its kind, a
cut above Norris’ previous efforts. Because of its violence,
it has been classified A-III — adults — by the U.S. Catholic
Conference. The Motion Picture Association of America
rating is R — restricted.
“The Dungeon Master” (Empire)
A dreadful hodgepodge of a movie, with no less than
seven directors, about a computer wizard who must over
come a series of challenges of the sort found in the game
that gives this dud its title. Because of its sadistic violence,
it has been classified O — morally offensive — by the U.S.
Catholic Conference. The Motion Picture Association of
America rating is PG — parental guidance suggested.
“Girls Just Want to Have Fun” (New World)
Stock teen movie in which two plucky kids win a dance
contest. Competent but mediocre light entertainment The
U.S. Catholic Conference has classified it A-II — adults and
adolescents. The Motion Picture Association of America
rating is PG — parental guidance suggested.
