Hapeville Parish Plans
Follow-Up On Renewal
Reconciliation and heal
ing, in a parish as in a fami
ly, make us become what
we are called to be,
brothers and sisters in
Christ, Father Chuck
Gallagher, SJ, founder of
the parish renewal center
in Elizabeth, N.J.,
believes.
He will be at St. John the
Evangelist parish in Hape
ville, on Friday and Satur
day, June 7 and 8, for a
follow-up program to the
successful parish renewal
held there last year. Father
Gallagher termed
“amazing” the response
received by the pastor,
Father Michael A. Woods,
to his call for renewal.
Over 750 people have par
ticipated in eight renewal
weekends held in the parish
hall from Friday night
through Sunday.
“People see a whole dif
ferent vision of what it
means to be Church. They
let go of the pain and suf
fering and see the positive
side. They become excited
about being Catholic,”
Father Gallagher says. As
a result their participation
in the life of the parish ex
pands tremendously.
The follow-up program at
the Hapeville parish is aim
ed at bringing an even
closer bonding of
parishioners to ^ one
another, based on the fami
ly model. “Jesus never
identified himself as a
single person, but in terms
of the ones he loved and
those who loved him,”
Father Gallagher says.
“We identify only as in
dividuals. That’s why we
are so lonely.” With
renewal a sense of belong
ing is built up, he says.
The renewal program
begins with the pastor and
his associates making a
training weekend con
ducted by Father Galla
gher. Here is stressed the
importance of the priests
coming to grips with their
own sinfulness to their
parishioners and of seeking
reconciliation with them.
Father Woods says one
change he has noticed is
the “warm response by
people to each other.” The
main change, he says, is an
interior one. “People
become aware of what be
ing Catholic means. The
renewal program gave
them the recognition that
being Catholic is a special
gift and should be lived as
such.”
He says the renewal trust
now is to generate a conti
nuing response with groups
of parishioners meeting
together in their homes to
pray and share their faith.
Father Woods says 250
parishioners have signed
up for the June follow-up
program.

you to live according to the
rule of the Dominicans.”
It’s not easy, “not a club,”
she explains but involves
practicing poverty, chasti

your life style.”

Since there is no organiz
