AROUND THE
ARCHDIOCESE
111 Catechists Receive
Certificates At Liturgy
Certification awards are
being made to 111 ar
chdiocesan religious
educators from 14 parishes
who have attained levels of
training and of experience
which meet the re
quirements of the Office of
Religious Education for
certification as basic, ad
vanced, and master
catechist.
Archbishop Thomas A.
Donnellan was the prin
cipal celebrant for the
archdiocesan catechist ap
preciation liturgy held on
May 18. During the
ceremony, the names of all
the recipients were called
and those who were present
received their certificate
and pin. St. Thomas the
Apostle was the host
parish. The pastor, Father
Robert Dyer, M.S., was one
of the concelebrants. St.
Thomas has pursued a
strong certification move
ment this past year under
the guidance of Sr. Mary
Ann Warner and Mrs. Ret
Goettee.
Several parishes have
held their own catechist ap
preciation ceremonies at
which the awards were
made, including Transfigu
ration parish and St.
Lawrence parish which
were active participants in
the certification program
last year along with St. An
thony’s, Holy Cross, St.
John the Evangelist and
Holy Trinity parishes.
From the initial six
parishes the number has
increased to 14. Added this
year are St. Thomas the
Apostle, IHM, St. James,
St. Joseph’s (Athens), St.
Michael, St. Paul of the
Cross and St. Philip Benizi.
Our Lady of the Assump
tion school also entered in
to the program this year
under the encouragement
of Ms. Mary-Anne Plaskon
and 13 teachers received
their certificates and pins
at a June 4 luncheon.
More than three-fourths
of all dioceses in the coun
try have catechist forma
tion programs, many of
which require certification.
Catechist certification is
not required presently in
the archdiocese of Atlanta.
In his remarks on May 18,
Archbishop Donnellan
referred to “Basic
Teachings for Catholic
Religious Education” pro
duced in 1973 by the Na
tional Conference of
Catholic Bishops. He
stressed the need for com
municating at least the
basic content of the faith in
forms that are clear and
understandable. In addi
tion, he highlighted the
designation of certification
as not only recognition of
preparation but also
“deputation” to teach in
the name of the Church.
Prayer Vigils

will be held beginning at
